Microsoft "passionate" about indies, says Lionhead

Creative director Gary Carr suggests Microsoft will use future press events to discuss new indie platform, says industry has no future without indies.

Microsoft is "passionate" about its relationship with independent developers and will use future press events to discuss a new platform to support the development community, Fable developer Lionhead Studios creative director Gary Carr has told OXM.

No Caption Provided

Discussing Microsoft's recent announcement that indie developers cannot self-publish on Xbox One, Carr said Microsoft understands that these developers are vitally important to the business.

"I certainly know that Microsoft want to talk at future press events about their relationships with indies. I can't really talk about that, but they're very passionate about building a strong relationship with indie development--indie development is the future," Carr said.

"There is no future to the games business without independent developers; they always will shape the industry, and the big corporations will follow," Carr added. "So that relationship is important."

Carr added that "giants" like Sony and Microsoft are needed to "hold [the industry] all together in some way," but said the independent development community has always been the "real driving force" behind the industry.

The Xbox One launches this November for $500.

Says the company that is pretty much owned by Microsoft and is their bitch....

They are so passionate that they make it almost impossible for them to release a game on live while making them jump through many unnecessary hoops.

Microsoft does need to learn to focus a bit more on the smaller developers and indies, that way we get more State of Decay and less Kinect: Star Wars

Yeah they are passionate about indie devs, after sony made big strides to actually prove they support them.

And of course lionhead would say so, lionhead is in bed with MS.

This might have passed before M$ started all the crap, now tho its not even funny....If Indy games are so important then why do they appear too eager to annoy em ?, why force them into signing away their creative works and a sizeable portion of any profits to big company publishers ?.
Gary, your not making any sense with this.

@Paul2004

I think that's the entire point of the article, dimwit. It hints at the possibility that indie devs will be able to self-publish on the One. How is that so hard to fathom? And what is "all that crap"? Actually, nevermind, can't believe I'm asking someone on GameSpot something.

The whole point to indy games is that they are -independant-.

and if indy games as of now are a driving force of commercial games now, two things need to happen.

One, the rest of the industry really needs to pick up the ball, they dropped it, right there, you see it?

Two, you need to keep the environment for them the way it is, because apparently the industry is doing just fine by indy devs. After all, they are the driving force of the industry now. Not to mention the incredible potential for abuse if independent developers are essentially game contractors for sony and microsoft.

if there is a concern over what can get on XBL, do what steam does with Steam Greenlight.

In my opinion Microsoft is has a point in not allowing self publishing/restricting the games devs can put up on Xbox Live. Go check out XBLIG and see what self publishing can do, a couple of great games weighed down by the trash that keeps being uploaded on there, kinda similar to gaming on Android where there are ripoffs and clones of everything. I'm curious how Sony handles this problem, do they fragment the marketplace based on quality similar to Xbox Live or do something different, guess we'll see.

@BurningJC007 if anything M$ more so lets ppl with the big $ publish rather then anyone with great games but less $ publish , i understand what you mean though , but the thing is even the ones with big $ can make these completely trash like games (off indie topic but looking at you EA) , its hard to say how sony is doing it but when its limited to the indies that have more $ then it hurts the broad picture of which ones are good and which ones are complete garbage but have the $ to have their spot.

@RicanV Well there are more people in the world who watch TV than play games, seems reckless to avoid this market. I'm sure the PS4 will have its own fair share of TV uses as well, Sony after all are predominantly known for their TVs

Is that $100 a month cover charge for being able to publish a game onto the Xbox Marketplace via XNA still on? Do developers that go this route still make only 70% of the sale from the Xbox Marketplace? Are they still charging an exorbitant amount of money to patch your game 30 days after release?

Uh huh... support. I commend them on removing that last stipulation but I think they still have a-ways to go.

Sure, Microsoft is passionate about indie games alright. Passionate about the publishing fees that they force the developers to pay in order to release the freaking game. Not to mention the extra cash they have to dump out in order to patch it.

Fantastic.

@bankai_456 @dogbert784 Developers use dedicated programs to make their games. They could use a mac to edit the voice overs, they could run linux on their PCs if they want. "Windows OS is everywhere" isn't really much of an argument to defend microsoft.

Video game pirates use Windows too; MS isn't passionate about them.
