Microsoft's Siri-like Cortana service doesn't talk to kids

If you’re 13 years old or younger, Cortana will not talk to you.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft Cortana, a voice activated virtual assistant for Windows Phone 8.1 named after Halo’s AI character, will not talk to kids.

Like Apple’s Siri on iPhone, Cortana’s speech recognition allows users to ask it questions and perform specific tasks. Cortana also collects data on users in the process in order to improve the experience over time, meaning it is subject to the US government's Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

COPPA’s policies insure that children under the age of 13 can’t share information online without the approval of a parent. According to GameSpot sister site CNET, at this point in development Cortana doesn’t have any parental controls, so if you’re listed as being younger than 13 on your Microsoft account and try to use Cortana, she’ll respond with, "I'm sorry, you'll need to be bit older before I can help you."

Cortana is currently available in beta to developers on Windows Phone 8.1. Support for other Microsoft devices like Windows computers and Xbox consoles could come later.

I gotta say, whoever came up with the idea of using Cortana/Jen Taylor for the new virtual assistant is a genius and deserves a promotion; this is great marketing right here.

makes sense. They're below her intelligence level. If Dr. Bones from the tv show were in the same situation it'd be equally awkward.

No one under 13? That takes care of about 50% of the Halo player base that might be interested in using Cortana

@DrKill09 Siri is a beautiful woman, locked up in a computer room at Apple's HQ, who has to answer about 13 million questions per day.

@Veenox All the data it collects is stored in it's Notebook which you can edit whenever you like. As others have said as a digital assistant, it's job is to collect data about you. At least with Cortana you can change or remove stuff you'd rather it didn't know, unlike Siri or Google.

@Veenox

OBJECTION!

You do know the core thing about the Product of digital Assistant is to help you. In order for it to help you it need to know the data to give you helpful information or it will be another useless speech technology.

Also other Voice Assistant do the same thing. I don't see you not using this product over another.

@---Cipher--- Because that's their generation. For people who are in their 20's today, the question from the older generation would be "Why would kids need a personal computer anyways?".

Obviously this isnt the case anymore, but in 10 years time, smartphones will be standard on everyone. And nobody will question it.

There could be a number of reasons. Kids can use it contact People like their Family and for emergency. In this age of digital there is a need store their Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes.

Other than that I see no use for it.

@mrtux5050 I'm 27, working on my Master's Degree, and have no use for a smartphone....I get by just fine with my run of the mill, cheapo phone. There is absolutely no reason to get a kid a smartphone unless you want it to parent your kids for you.

The contacts, calendar, tasks, notes are all things I can do on my $40 phone, no need for an iPhone. Yet I see more and more kids with those phones and die a little inside each time...

@---Cipher--- @quaker04 @mrtux5050 I get annoyed at how smart phones have changed human interaction from time to time, That being said, the school they go to will probably give the kids a laptop in a year so it's kind of like "eh- what can you do".

You can put parental controls on smart phones at the end of the day.

...Now, when a 13 y/o kid whips out a phone that cost more then mine THAT'S when I just shake my head for some reason.

@olddadgamer @---Cipher--- @quaker04 @mrtux5050 You have a point with school bus comment. I fully see both sides of the argument and understand people's concerns but I can say as a parent, my daughter will have access to various forms of technology through her life based on when she is ready for it.

If a child has excelled in the use of computers and have learned how to properly and safely use one, I do not see why they should not be given the use of other devices such as a smart phone, while having the usage monitored.

In this day and age I can log onto the account online and see exactly how much data has been used each day. If there is an abnormal amount of data used on a particular day then I have the chance and reason to check the usage history on the phone itself. I won't say to my child "no you can't have a smart phone because your to young to trust." I might say " no your not ready for that device yet" but that is based on a learning scale and not an age scale.

I quite enjoy the connectivity devices offer and its becoming more and more popular in both life and business. Anyone who can't see how technology is advancing in the work place will have troubles down the road. I don't see any problem with teaching a child how to use something if you ensure they are taught properly.

I feel like saying 13 is to young for a smart phone for any child is the same as saying a 50 year old is ok to pick up a sniper rifle as the first gun they ever held and fire off a few rounds at a target, without anyone there to show them how to use it. Any device requires proper training to use and people excel at different rates.

I spent the entire day outside with my 3 year old daughter today as she blew bubbles. She also has a leappad tablet that has helped her learn things that she normally wouldn't be taught until kindergarten such as basic addition and subtraction. (Having a device doesn't take her away from other childhood activities is the point I am trying to make here )None of the games she has is rated for an age below 4 and yet she can play games with a rating up to age 8. I feel that age is a poor judgment for something like this as opposed to skill level and personality. That's just my opinion though and I understand why other people do not feel the same way..

@olddadgamer @---Cipher--- @quaker04 @mrtux5050 If kids need to make a call, I'm sure there is an adult around with one. My eldest is 4 and already knows how to operate an iPhone 4 quite well. He uses it for his readingeggs program and a bit of games to pass the time on long road trips. Best part is its an old phone with no sim card in it. Like a mini wifi iPad but with the internet except on selected programs.

Its not about banning kids from technology. Its about teaching them within the boundaries of their safety. Once they are teenagers, God help us all.

@---Cipher--- @quaker04 @mrtux5050 I am a parent. No damn way my kids are getting smart phones before they're 13. Especially as, ironically, in this day and age, they are so well monitored that they never have to call me. Christ they won't let the kid off the school bus if I'm not there. So when would he have to call me?

@quaker04 @---Cipher--- @mrtux5050 I can do all that other stuff on a computer though. Where I, if I were a parent, could monitor them more easily and don't have to worry about all the downsides of a smartphone. I just don't see the benefit of having a smartphone outweighing the cons. Connectivity is great, but connectivity is awful. I got rid of my Facebook because I was being tagged in photos of parties I never went to that had minors drinking, doing drugs, etc etc etc. I remember going to visit a friend and her roommate and they sat there IMing each other....2 feet away from each other... No child should be connected and monitored 24/7, ever.

@olddadgamer @quaker04 @---Cipher--- @mrtux5050 Agreed. Though this subject has many endpoints and I don't think there is a generic conclusion if a kid should or not have a smartphone, not even if we consider all pros and cons.

@quaker04 @---Cipher--- @mrtux5050 It's that connectivity that scares the hell out of me. You let the kid use the ipad, you can keep an eye on who or what he's contacting. You give the kid the phone, then God knows where/who/what he's going to.

@---Cipher--- @mrtux5050 i hate to admit it but sir your are correct. smart phones equals pornography, sites like craighlist, sites for dating like pof. then parents get mad when they daughters turn out whores. a simple flip fone for EMERGENCIES would do just fine as you point out. all equals to bad parenting.

@---Cipher--- @mrtux5050 Connectivity. You're now 27, when you were 13, others with 27 years old would ask: "Why a 13 old have a computer in first place?".

Besides, a 13 year old can be a developer or studying programming of Windows Phone Apps or even other languages. Whatever you think, judging just by the age itself is no-sense.

Yes there are kids that shouldn't have because don't use all the smartphone technology, yes there are cheaper alternatives, but you shouldn't think that there is no use for 13 years old kids just because you don't.

Well I cannot argue about you choice which is fine. You are right about a simple phone will do but I think feature phones are dieing since the cost of smartphones are cheaper or the same price as a feature phone. It is more likely someone will buy a cheap android phone and the person will not know it is a smartphone. I rather them choose Windows Phone but hey.

Lets say that is not the case. Even your cheapo phone can perform similar functions since most of the services are in the cloud can IM, Email, and browse the web.

Another point I like to bring up is popularity of these types of phones would lead to social stigma for the child. Which is not the end of world but hey it is another issue.

I see so many people failing to read also the headline is misleading it should say "Microsoft's Siri-like Cortana service doesn’t talk to kids due to the COPPA LAW."

Lets say Microsoft did not read the law and went ahead with it. I think US Government would go after Microsoft to enforce the Law. You would see stories of Microsoft failing to comply with COPPA. This is not new because I think Facebook and any Internet service that stores data on users.

I think they will probably will have change the policy that you must have some approval under you parents Microsoft account to allow for the child to use it. Which is probably the parental controls that could comply with the COPPA Law.
