Microsoft Says It's Pursuing Legal Action Against Halo Online Mod--But The Mod Still Survives

The genie apparently cannot be put back in the bottle.

Of all the Halo titles that have come out over the years, Halo Online is definitely the weirdest. Announced and released in early access in 2015, Halo Online was a Russia-only, PC-exclusive multiplayer game based on the Halo 3 engine. Back in 2016, development on the game was shut down and the game itself was shelved.

However, Halo Online continued to survive outside of the control of Microsoft. Its code leaked a couple of years ago, and determined fans built a modded version of it that allowed non-Russians to play it. Called ElDewrito, it featured player-hosted servers, stat tracking, and even emblem customization. However, Microsoft has now declared that it has initiated legal action intended to prevent players from using Halo: Online's game files.

The company is not targeting ElDewrito directly, since it's just a mod built on top of the game files. However, it has begun issuing DMCA notices to streaming sites showing Halo: Online in action as well as any websites hosting the game files themselves.

Microsoft chose to start cracking down now because the ElDewrito modders had just recently released a brand-new, feature-rich patch, and the player base spiked in response. In fact, there are still thousands of Halo: Online players right now. And it appears that Halo developer 343 Industries recognizes the huge demand for Halo on PC.

"As Microsoft's need to protect its IP spun up, we reached out to members of the ElDewrito team to have an open discussion about the project and the admittedly difficult situation we all find ourselves in," it wrote in a statement. "One thing remains clear--the community really wants more Halo on PC. As we look ahead, we're very excited about the prospects of an official classic Halo experience making its way to PC and we hope to be able to partner with the ElDewrito team and broader mod and content creation community to help inform the types of experiences and features our fans desire."

Although nothing has been announced yet, this at least gives a little glimmer of hope that more of the classic Halo games could make their way to PC at some point in the future. In any case, we do know that Halo 6 will almost certainly be on PC, as every Xbox-exclusive game is now released on Windows 10 as well.

At this point, Microsoft have to defend this IP because there's nothing else, lol It's a shame to see the slow failure of the Xbox One exclusive library (because in the end, PC players also suffers some collateral damage). And don't get me wrong, I don't care about brands and fanaticism. But as a player, it always sad to see a competitor getting worse. We had that in the past with Sega getting worse, now it's microsoft. The sea of thieves disaster... damn. Maybe the "solution" could be a Halo collection for PC, who knows? Guaranteed profits, people will only buy it because of multiplayer, so pirates will not have that many advantages. In the end, this whole "collapse" can be beneficial for the PC community.

Microsoft would rather attack mod users than release Halo 3 on PC.

@Thanatos2k: It isn't the mod they are going after nimrod, it is the illegally downloaded game files from Halo Online. Try sticking to the facts.

I didn't even know about it until now, I'm definitely going to check it out. Thanks Microsoft.

The part that always got me was how you couldn't play this game even if you found a way to access the Russian servers and were willing to endure the Russian speaking players and text.

It's cute how they always say they want a frank discussion with the community so they can work this stuff out when all they really want to do is silence anyone who dares touch MS' toys. Heck, there have been many instances in the past when some indie group said they worked out a deal with the dev...and then the dev shut them down anyway.

Anywho, this isn't the case of a group stealing MS' IP. This is a Halo game, made available in Russia only, that is being modified to allow EVERYONE to play it. Blocking the game was a dick move on MS' part and it's an even dickier move now. No sympathy from me.

@Barighm: no, it is EXACTLY that - stealing and distributing the Halo Online game files which they do not have permission or license to do so. Almost every other IP holder would do the same to protect THEIR property.

@Barighm: it wasn't a complete game if I remember right. Also because it uses their code to somewhat remake the game they have to protect their property, it wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't shelved though.

So of course don't sympathise with anyone on this, especially the modders.

Whilst I agree Microsoft should protect their rights, they are incapable of looking after their own franchise. The broken multiplayer of MC collection supports this. If 343 can't do the job, then someone else will. Welcome to the PC modding community.

@nabinator: 343 stated all the problems in the MCC multiplayer never showed up in internal tests and thus became incredibly difficult to fix.

@kanekan-slaugh: Then 343 is incompetent or at worst they did know about em and left em there.

Damn it, no more updates and that means the server browser won't get worked on. Well, at least the mod still exists and this is an extremely good mod/game. It has good optimization for the most part, the netcode is solid, it feels like old school halo, and the best part, it's free.
