Microsoft Says "We Haven't Pulled Any Games From PlayStation" Amid Redfall PS5 Discussion

"They said, 'No PlayStation 5. Now we're gonna do Game Pass, Xbox, and PC.'"

Developer Arkane has commented on what changed with its vampire game Redfall after Microsoft bought studio owner ZeniMax. Speaking to IGN France (via IGN), director Harvey Smith said there was a "huge sea change" for Redfall after Microsoft bought the company, and this included a decision to not bring the game to PlayStation 5.

"They said, 'No PlayStation 5. Now we're gonna do Game Pass, Xbox, and PC,'" Smith said.

A spokesperson for Microsoft told GameSpot that the company has not "pulled any games from PlayStation."

Microsoft announced its intent to buy ZeniMax in September 2020 and completed the buyout in March 2021. Some are suggesting that Arkane was working on a PS5 edition of Redfall and canceled it after the buyout, but Smith did not say this outright. GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details on the situation.

Development on Redfall began before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, prior to Microsoft's buyout of ZeniMax, so it seems possible that a PS5 edition of Redfall could have been in development. But that is not confirmed.

In any event, some are saying this is a bad look for Microsoft amid its proposed buyout of Activision Blizzard because it shows that Microsoft is taking a formerly multiplatform game developer and assigning them to a single console platform, in this case Xbox. A judge has agreed with the suggestion that Microsoft does not always keep to its public promises, but this isn't necessarily enough to make a legal case. And for what it's worth, Microsoft never said it would keep Bethesda games multiplatform following the buyout.

"We haven't pulled any games from PlayStation. In fact, we've expanded our footprint of games that we've shipped on Sony's PlayStation since our acquisition of ZeniMax, and the first two games we shipped after closing were PlayStation 5 exclusives," a spokesperson for Microsoft told GameSpot, referring to Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. "We did the same thing since our closing of Minecraft as we extended the reach of that franchise. All of the games that were available on PlayStation when we acquired ZeniMax in March 2021 are still available on PlayStation, and we have continued to do content updates on PlayStation and PC. We have always said that future decisions on whether to distribute ZeniMax games for other consoles will be made on a case-by-case basis."

In a separate interview, Smith used the same "sea change" comment about what happened with Redfall after Microsoft bought ZeniMax. Smith said Microsoft buying the studio allowed Arkane to focus on fewer platforms because PlayStation was no longer in the mix. Smith added that Redfall coming to Xbox Game Pass is a big deal because it expands the game's potential audience significantly.

In the IGN interview, Smith said Redfall has the potential to become Arkane's biggest game ever by player count thanks to Game Pass, a subscription program that he guessed might have 30 million subscribers. The latest numbers from Microsoft show that Game Pass had 25 million members as of January 2022, but that figure has no doubt grown in the year-plus since then.

Redfall launches May 2 for Xbox Game Pass on console and PC. The game has an always-online requirement, even for its single-player mode, but Arkane might remove this requirement at some point.

Arkane releases in May on Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's recent preview, "Don't Worry, Redfall Puts An Unmistakably Arkane Spin On The Looter Shooter."

why do people keep mentioning the far left jerk bill gates in regards to decisions MS makes? He hasnt been the company's CEO for about 15 years now. Try talking about Satya or Phil instead.

I don't mind... Microsoft can do wathever they want with their properties. I just feel bad for those devs who just don't give a s%&* about buisness decision and just want to see their games played by as many players as possible. Now they're stuck behind some exclusivity BS! It's not about Sony, MS, Nintendo, it's about devs and players! Always the same people bieng penalized by those big corporations!

@riptal: yeah but notice how many users game pass has, potential people playing your game, versus how many units sold/players for typical games. The thing with GP is the chance for those games that hit good is there to reach far more gamers than typical retail offering.

Lets say Half of GP users check out a game and have a good impression of it. That's more than your typical top selling PS exclusive. They won't see the same cash return, but often don't spend as much on their game as a FPAAA.

As they get better at the payoff/attention balance it'll just get better for devs that do it. As long as their game is decent. IMO another good thing is bad games will see bigger impact on that kind of platform...on their ability to fool people. You come with crap and you'll sink.

@oddshroom: you’re not wrong, but if it’s on gamepass, the developers are largely already paid for. I don’t know what the purchase from gamepass rate is, but I suspect it’s not substantive.

Microsoft has no obligation to share their IPs with competitors, unless contractually obligated. There may be 10 year contracts being signed for COD, but they never promised such a thing for Redfall, Starfield, or any other game and they don’t need to. Microsoft will keep certain pre-existing IPs multi platform where they stand to make the most money, but, again, they don’t need to.

These games are their property now, period. They made no pre-existing promises on any of them.

“We want to share more games with more gamers” does NOT equal “we will release Redfall on PS5.”

Essentially Microsoft sees "taking a game away" as an already released game, and it also doesn't include new games for existing IPs like TESVI which is confirmed to be exclusive. Honestly Redfall is whatever because it's a new IP but I do see Elder Scrolls being pretty shady. Existing IPs should remain multi-platform, like Minecraft has been.

@rizenstrom: Basically, if it hasn't been announced for a particular console, it's fair game. Had Redfall been announced for PS5, I can see people being angry, as they should. But you can't be angry about a game you never knew was going to be on your console of choice when you find out its not. Disappointed, sure. But not angry.

@bdrtfm: You're missing the point of this news. “Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus”, which means "false in one thing, false in everything". In other words, by this happening in this particular instance, there is now doubt behind every single thing MS said, so now it's safe and reasonable to assume they HAVE taken games away. This is an actual legal thing. It DOES matter in a court of law...which I've been saying all along.

@Barighm: but both their points are still valid. Microsoft claimed to not have taken any game from the PS5, and it is true. If you read what he said, he basically defined "taking away" as "removing a launched game from the platform where it was launched". "All games that were available on the Playstation when we bought Zenimax are still available on the Playstation". Framing like this, they didn't take Redfall from the PS5, it was never released in the PS5. You could argue that "taking away" includes ceasing development on unreleased games, but MS will argue that's a stretch and not what they promised in the first place.

To the people that are upset over exclusives or games being "taken away" just buy both consoles or play one of the hundreds of multiplatform games that are already available.

Series X and PS5 been out for almost 2 1/2 years. If you can't save up $500 in two years then that's your problem. Even if Phil did lie or mislead, Sony does that daily. Nintendo doesn't give anything to anybody ever and sells 5 year old games at full price. Yet MS are the villains of gaming.

@noodles22: end of the day, these companies are all just doing what they think I best for them. It's funny when people act like one of them is more about the consumer than others. These companies care about consumer money, not necessarily feelings.

I just can't stand the BS these companies will spew and the whole court case of the Activision deal has just made both Microsoft/Xbox and Sony/Playstation look petty. I keep saying that they're like two kids fighting over a toy and it's embarrassing. Perhaps more embarrassing are the fans that feel like they need to pick a side.

Bogus and fake news. It was never in development for ps5. They developed it for pc originally, then branched out to consoles later, after the console development kits were sent out.

I trust Microsoft. Bless Bill Gates.

@blaznwiipspman1: That's not the context of this news, though. The point is MS is saying one thing NOW when they're under scrutiny when their ACTIONS regularly prove otherwise, and now we have a recent example.

Frankly, they would have been better off NOT saying all this stuff about "we never take games away" or whatever because I think everyone accepted a new first party IP as an exclusive, and GP is multiplatform anyway. But because they did, now we have (even more) proof they're liars.

@hardwenzen: Eh, the funny part is less what MS is saying and more the shills and Xbots around here doing their darndest to spin it. You literally have proof and facts smacking them in the face on a weekly basis and they're still dismissing it and ignoring it. People wonder how MAGA could exist. Well, following this news gives you glimpse of how. People will just believe whatever the heck they want to believe. I can understand why people would treat religion or political ideals that way but it's pretty shocking to see the same conviction given to a frickin' video game company. Not even a very good one.

That said, I do believe Phil when he says these things, it's just he's the PR guy for a reason. He believes what he says, but then the REAL bosses do whatever the hell they want and he's left cleaning up the mess.

A company buying a studio and making a brand new IP that was never multiplat exclusive to their platforms is a nonstory - no matter how hard people try to make it one. Gamespot even admits its a nonstory when they remind us that Microsoft never promised to keep Bethesda games on all platforms. Anyone who was thinking that Microsoft would buy all of these IPs and not make single one of them exclusive or thinks making them exclusive is somehow unethical is just pearl clutching. The only games they promised to keep multiplat are Minecraft and COD. They've done exactly that with Minecraft so there is no reason to expect they won't do so with COD. If they don't, then people can get upset about it.

@bdrtfm: Well the thing I assume people would point to is that as the article states, the game was seemingly in development before the purchase. Take that and what the one individual said and you could also assume they were talking about a ps5 version already in development. We do not know if it actually got to that point or not though, again as the article states. That would make the first sentence of your post false, but alas we don’t know. I agree it’s not a big deal, really just the semantics of when the game was in development and if it ever had a planned or in development ps5 version.
