Microsoft To Offer Refunds On Digital Xbox One And PC Games

Refundbox One.

Microsoft will offer refunds for digital game purchases through Xbox Live across Xbox One and PC, according to an image of an upcoming update posted on Reddit.

Information on the refund program was issued to those participating in the Xbox Insider Program, which allows members to test new features before they are made available to the wider Xbox community.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Microsoft To Offer Refunds On Digital Xbox One And PC Games

"You’ve spoken; we've listened," reads the message. "In support of offering gamers the freedom of choice, we're making changes to the Microsoft Store purchase experience by offering customers a simple way to instantly return digital products like games and apps through account.microsoft.com.

"When a game or app leaves you wanting more, we're here to help. Self-service refunds on Xbox One and Windows 10 provide a quick, simple way of returning a digital product."

Source: Reddit
Source: Reddit

Further details on the specifics of what content can be refunded and when were posted on NeoGAF. According to a second image, games are "eligible for self-service refunds within 14 days of purchase if you have less than 2 hours of play time across all accounts." However, "DLC, season passes, and add-ons are not eligible for self-service refunds."

Additionally, "the game or app must be downloaded and launched before requesting a self-service refund" and "you must wait for at least 1 day after the game or app's release before requesting a self-service refund."

Microsoft also states that "certain Windows 10 apps may not be eligible for self-service refunds" and it "reserves the right to block access for users who abuse self-service refunds."

Source: NeoGAF
Source: NeoGAF

This self-service approach to refunding digitally purchase content is uncommon on consoles. Neither Sony nor Nintendo currently offer a similar feature on their current consoles. On PC, however, Valve introduced a similar refund policy for Steam games in 2015, allowing users to return games and DLC within two weeks of purchase provided they haven't played the content for more than two hours.

Microsoft has steadily been introducing and tweaking Xbox Live features to make it a more robust gaming platform. In March it detailed Arena, which allows Xbox Live users to participate in tournaments together. Features such as Clubs and LFG have also been added to make it easier for communities to form around games and for people to find multiplayer groups.

The news comes as Microsoft gears up for the reveal of Project Scorpio, the next console in the Xbox One family. On April 6 it revealed the full hardware specs for Project Scorpio and has since shown off what a developer unit looks like.

Project Scorpio is due to launch this holiday season, but it remains to be seen when Microsoft will start to officially show it off in more detail. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said he is unsure if Microsoft will show off Project Scorpio before E3 in June, while also stating recently that he thinks it's "critical" for first-party games to be ready for the system's launch.

This is a kick in the face to the shady game developer who constantly put out buggy underdeveloped games. this is the only way to assure quality control. broken games do not deserve our money, thank you Microsoft.

Not to worry, I have a never-need-a-refund safeguard in place, it's called "never buy anything from Windows store".

Effective immediately all games will be required to offer a two hour time trial to avoid refunds.

@StephenSays: That would be pretty great actually. Every game being free to play for 2 hours would encourage a lot more purchases. Everyone should be able to try before they buy.

@saturatedbutter: I agree. Miss having actual game demos to try. The 2 hr window would be the ideal amount of time to see if you truly want the game.

Well that sounds useful. If you're buying a random game you've never heard about before and realize within 2 hours that it's complete crap. So basically for the uninformed, impulsive buyer.

@Atzenkiller: While you're mostly right, there are exceptions. Sometimes you read up on a game and think you'll enjoy it, then you actually play it and realize it's just not for you (example, I picked up State of Decay last week and within an hour and a half I realized it wasn't quite a "me" kind of game)

Now if only XBox would roll that update out to me (I'm a beta tester) considering I have a perfect example of what they're providing the service for.... :D

"HERP DERP STEAM ALREADY DID IT WOKKA WOKKA"

Yes. We know. Steam is the gaming equivalent of the Simpsons, they did pretty much everything first.

That being said, the fact that XBox has decided to follow suit is NOT a bad thing. Whether you're an XBox fan or not, this is a step forward for the entire gaming industry, and if all you have to say is "yeah bro steam does this already" then you've completely missed the point. Choice is good for gamers, just as competition is good for consumers. Even PS4 owners have potential to benefit from this, if Sony follows suit (doubtful considering their massive lead in the market but hey you never know)

Essentially, if your favorite restaurant starts serving pizza, are you gonna bitch that "the place down the block has been serving pizza for years"? Or are you gonna stfu and eat your slice?

@lonesamurai1: Fair enough. This is especially true considering "consoles" are basically underpowered one-horse PC's at this point, but as long as they remain relatively cheap and user friendly there will always be a market for them. Steam was a game-changer (pun somewhat intended :D) from the very beginning, and if every major console company uses them as a guideline then I'm totally okay with that.

Nice to see they are finally catching up with their competitors. When was the last time MS actually innovated anything? Their cloud sucks and most of their products are a generation or two behind. I wiped my PC and installed Ubuntu. So much happier now.

@SingletreeAve: "Their cloud sucks"

Microsoft cloud is liable with unlimited cloud saves with Gold and non subscribers. Drivatar's is one of the best features happened with the Forza franchise, every first party uses dedicated servers etc. unlike Sony with Enjoy Gran Turismo Sport that's going to be using Peer to Peer

This is good news. Considering the 30+ years I've been gaming... once you took the shrink wrap off a game box it was yours forever, no refunds. At least not from any retail stores I ever shopped at. Then you have to consider Microsoft's originally proposed and quite draconian policy regarding digital game purchases during the lead up to the release of Xbox One. This is a big shift away from that. So, this is good and more than I've ever seen when it comes to software returns.

Is it not easier to give every game a 2 hour time trial? Are time trials a lot of work for the devs?

Refunding transactions seems like more admistration work than having a licence expire after 2 hours...but I also am only guessing

@valhallaoutcast: It's not for testing games, you'll be punished for abusing the system if you try to do this refund for multiple games. It's for being able to get a refund for yourself if the game is not working properly or if there's an issue with it.

@anodyn3: Obviously they're not going to check the reason behind your refund, they're going to give you your money back regardless. But if you do it a few times, you'll be warned of abusing the system. At least that's how steam's 14days/2hrs system works. Maybe with Microsoft you'll be able to trial every game, but I think they're implementing the same system as steam.

Over the years I've bought a lot of digital games. And sometimes just a few days after I buy one, I see that it goes on sale for a deep discount after I've paid full price. So I call up Microsoft and see if they can help me out and always get the same answer. "nope"

Maybe with this new program my bad luck won't be so costly.

@livedreamplay: Did I say two weeks? No, I said a few days. And that's pretty common customer service for retail. That's why stores like Best Buy price match other stores and also give refunds for the situation I've just described. What's annoying is people like you who like to make snarky comments because it makes them feel better.

@livedreamplay: If it's a poor business decision to refund customers that made a regrettable purchase, then why are they rolling out this new refund program? Maybe they will lose a bit more money but the whole idea behind it is customer support and ideally they will gain more loyal customers and in turn increase profits. This was my point from the start.

@overachiever89: If it's a good decision that increases profits why hasn't it been done by now? Why do they refuse to refund you if you call with this exact issue, that you bought a game before discount. Anyway, I can see your point, from a customer's loyalty perspective it's definitely good.

Nothing to see. Just MS spreading awesome again. I would complain about the 2 hour limit. I say bump it to like 4. But shorter games could be destroyed in that time. I think I'll be happier with 4 tho.

@SchNerdy: This system is not made to replace trials/demos, and you'll get punished if you do use it in that sense. Steam has the exact 14days/2hour process and if you do it for more than 3 games I think, they issue you a warning that you're abusing the system. It's made for you to get a refund if a game doesn't work properly, not to test which games you like or not...

It's cool but I usually watch videos and read about every game before I buy so I'll know if I'll like it. I'm finished buying Day 1 games unless it's from CD Projekt Red.

Sony, one day, maybe. It's Nintendo that would never do this. Hell, they almost never reduce the price of games, even really old ones. When Nintendo gets your money, it's immediately deposited in a hyperdimensional rift that is stored in Thanos' infinity gauntlet. That requires the Incredible Hulk, but you need the Avengers to keep him focused, so...it's a whole thing. Just don't expect your money, is all I'm say'n.

In all seriousness, it's great that Microsoft followed Steam with this, and hopefully Sony and Nintendo follow suit.
