Microsoft Wants More Award-Winning Games Like Hi-Fi Rush, Just Fired Everyone Who Made Hi-Fi Rush

Microsoft recently said that the company needs more "smaller games that give us prestige and awards" after closing several studios that produced smaller award-winning games.

Microsoft's shuttering of four of its game studios earlier this month prompted a barrage of negative responses from around the games industry. In a recent town hall, head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty made a curious comment, according to The Verge: "We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards."

Some developers on the call expressed surprise at this statement, given that it recently shut down several studios that have a track record of doing just that. For example, last year's Hi-Fi Rush won many awards from a variety of sources, including Best Audio Design (The Game Awards), Best Audio (Developers Choice Awards), and a BAFTA for Animation.

Now Playing: Hi-Fi Rush Video Review

Many observers in the gaming industry were upset when the game's developer, Tango Gameworks, was impacted by Xbox's studio closures. Though the sales data for the game is not public, Xbox representatives issued public statements expressing satisfaction with the game, with VP of Xbox games marketing Aaron Greenberg calling it "a break out (sic) hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations." This came shortly after it was reported that Hi-Fi Rush had undersold.

Former Tango employees weren't shy about responding to this news, with Hi-Fi Rush director John Johanas posting the above screengrab from the game to express his feelings. Tango Gameworks wasn't the only acclaimed studio shut down by Xbox. Though Arkane Austin's latest game, Redfall, was a critical and commercial disaster, the studio developed Prey (2017), which is widely considered one of the best "immersive sims" ever.

As such, it's easy to see why these laid-off developers are wondering what exactly their former boss is getting at with these behind-the-scenes statements, given that they chafe with the recent layoffs. As for Hi-Fi Rush, you can play it on Xbox Game Pass.

The atrocity that is the headless machine of XB!

XB has more smiling fluffy lies than I can stand anymore. Sara Bond's interview is just hard to watch. Someone please count the number of times she speed blinks...a sure sign of the lies oozing from her befuddled fluff generating mind. Phil and Sara need to stop talking down to us, it is just unbearable at this point.

I don't even care to watch their fake E3 show now, it will be just more lies and ways to undermine gamers with gaas games and sub services that we don't need and that will kill the industry. They have spelled it out VERY clearly, that XB does not value us as console gamers and does not respect our money, they need to be buried alongside Sega.

Microsoft puts too much money into lackluster games, then doesn't dig deep and hire talented folks to make smaller scale, creative projects.

So yeah, no growth in the industry (for them). But then you look at a group like Bandai Namco, or Capcom and see them steadily growing after winning award after award.

Truly a tragedy. My condolences to those who lost their livelihoods. However, let this be a lesson to other devs. They need to produce quality games, they can't expect companies to buy them out and then start to release terrible products like Redfall. Redfall was an insult to gaming as a medium.

Mistakes will no longer be tolerated.

Do you believe me now
that Microsoft buying everyone who actually knew how to make games
was a bad idea?

I love that they're doing this, it's like they're intentionally trying to sabotage the industry so it can be reborn from the independent ashes. The more likely scenario is that they're just stupid, but let me have this.

I've been an Xbox fan for decades already, but it is definitely the darkest time in Xbox's history. I don't know how they could do worse than RROD, Kinect and losing 7-1 to Sony, but somehow now they're doing even worse. This generation has been a disaster so far, with no silver lining and no light in the end of the tunnel
