Microsoft Won't Announce Any Studio Acquisitions At TGS, Sega Or Otherwise [Update]

Despite rumors suggesting another big acquisition was on the way, Microsoft has stated that it has no such announcement to make.

[Update: Sticking to its word, Microsoft didn't have anything related to acquisitions to share at the Tokyo Game Show. Instead, it detailed a new Japan-focused update coming to Microsoft Flight Simulator and showed off new trailers and gameplay for upcoming Xbox Series X titles. Phil Spencer also said that Xbox Live play has nearly doubled year over year in Japan. With this degree of support, that could increase further. ]

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced another massive acquisition with the purchase of Bethesda and all its properties and studios. Since then, a rumor has suggested that the Xbox parent company was preparing another big announcement at the Tokyo Game Show, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Now Playing: Microsoft Acquires Bethesda - GS News Update

Rumors suggested that Microsoft was lining up a purchase of Sega and its properties, which today include everything from Sonic the Hedgehog to Persona 5. An announcement at the Tokyo Game Show would've made sense too, given Microsoft's struggles in Japan with regards to Xbox sales. In a summary of what to expect from its showcase, Microsoft shot down the rumors entirely.

The rumors became so widespread on social media that it quickly became a running joke. Some unearthed a tweet from Sega's Twitter account from August that was argued as a hint for the announcement, while others embraced the absurdity with connections to some of Microsoft's latest Xbox products.

The Xbox Tokyo Game Show showcase will include some new looks at Microsoft Flight Simulator, some Japanese Minecraft creator showcases, and more. It will not include any new next-generation news, with Microsoft also confirming that the stream will only be broadcast in Japanese.

After its purchase of ZeniMax Media and its subsidiaries, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella did state that the company was looking at acquiring more studios in the future. Over the past two years, the Xbox Game Studios brand has grown significantly, now including Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Obsidian, and Double Fine. With the purchase this week, that now includes id Software, Bethesda Softworks, Arkane Studios, and MachineGames.

The Xbox Series X and Series S both went up for pre-order this week, with available stock still fluctuating at a variety of retailers. To keep up with where you can get your preorders in for an Xbox Series X or Series S, check out our preorder guide for notifications on stock.

@walbo: they might be looking for more but they ain’t spending billions again. Sega is worth at least a few billion if Minecraft was worth 2.5bn and King Mobile was worth 5.9bn. MS buys anything else big the industry will start to step in. MS has tried to shit with windows and got busted. MS has bought a lot of studios and buying more like Zenimax would be have them starting to corner the market. There is only a few really big 3rd party companies. I think MS overpaid for Zenimax. Especially since WB was going for almost half that at 4.5bn rumored. But I think Zenimax was bought to help Xbox get revenue. Spencer can say all day it’s not about the money it’s about the games and that he isn’t touching Zenimax. But those are all pr bs. Buying Zenimax is like buying WB, EA, or Activision. You don’t buy a company that makes many titles that make a shit ton of money on many platforms to just add games to game pass. Zenimax will be 3rd party with MS getting timed exclusives or exclusive games here and there. Hines said that Bethesda would make and publish its own games still. That Xbox was there to help them grow. So I don’t see Xbox or MS spending any more big money. Sega or Capcom will probably see Nintendo and/or Sony step in. Freaking Capcom helped developer the Switch.

@Barighm: I don’t. It’s not about portability, which xcloud will be bring. It’s about the games and Xbox is seen as a western console. There are a ton of games never released here in the US because Japan doesn’t feel they do well here. Dragon Quest 11 is an example of that. I mean we never got DQ10 and any DQ game coming to the US was going to be based on sales of DQ11.

@face76: But it is about portability. Mobiles are huge in Japan. And there is nothing stopping xCloud from getting key Japanese releases in Japan. That's no guarantee but it will certainly help a lot.

Microsoft buying all these companies is going to make so much money from PS5 and the best part is Microsoft knows what they are doing.

@systemoverload: Actually, history has shown MS, outside of windows, is pretty much just winging it. They tried something with Game Pass, it worked, and now they're going all-in on it even though it still suffers from the usual Windows problems. This almost always results in some competitor eventually doing it so much better.

Sega is garbage. But I hope Sony flies an anti trust lawsuit against them, or buys Rockstar. Maybe Nintendo can sue them too, or Sony and Nintendo can team up like they were supposed to in the 90s.

@systemoverload: Er...no. PS4's revenue alone is enough to cover most of those purchases, if not all, that MS made, and still have money left over. For the Xbox division, that represented their entire revenue for a year. They had to use money from their overall operating revenue to cover some of it.

@Barighm: Sony’s Game Division make up a big chunk of Sony’s revenue, Sony needs to spend less so the revenue from the Game Division is more.

@thegreatchomp: Yeah, no way in hell is Sony getting Rockstar. Or MS for that matter. They've been printing money with GTA V for 7 years. Take Two will never sell them no matter what price MS or Sony offers, hell I don't think Sony would be able to afford it. The only way I see anyone getting Rockstar is if MS gets Take Two, which I highly doubt. They would spend more than Bethesda.

@xenomorphalien: Actually, MS COULD afford to buy Rockstar...but it would likely cost a big chunk of their operating budget and would put the Xbox in the red for years. Given GTA5's ability to generate billions of recurring revenue, along with the games themselves selling supposedly 135 million units it would probably have an asking price of...maybe $25 billion? Well, not cheap.

Take Two itself has a market cap of $18 billion, but given the properties they produce they would likely ask for quite a bit more, maybe up to triple their share price.

That said...there is no point. These games have sold hundreds of millions of units, all of which are generating MTs or whatever on their respective platforms. Xbox and Playstation and all of them are already getting a cut of all that revenue, so they're already making a lot of money on GTA.

@thegreatchomp: They have the money but buying Rockstar would be crazy expensive. We're talking about a developer who made the most successful piece of entertainment in history. A developer who's games sell like hotcakes no matter what it is. Last I checked Sony was like a $90 billion company? Rockstar would likely be like $15 billion or even more. Or maybe I'm grossly overestimating. Point is, Sony would have to throw away a HUGE chunk of their worth towards it. I don;t see it happening.

@thegreatchomp: Revenue does not equal cash reserves. SONY is not exactly cash flush, regardless of the PS4's success. SONY can in no way afford such a purchase.

@thegreatchomp: Playstation could probably cover the sale on Playstation revenue alone, but it would take a few years, and, like Bethesda, would not be worth becoming exclusive due to the massive market on other platforms. It's just not worth it.

@Maize84: You're an idiot if you think that is why the Dreamcast failed. The people who did that was minimal and had little effect upon their bottom dollar. It was more the idiotic decisions by Sega of Japan and SONY's aggressiveness in keeping certain franchises from Sega.

@systemoverload: Yeah. It's almost as bad as MS putting root kits into the MCC collection. Mmm...anti-cheat software known for remaining active after you switch off the game and taking pictures of your computer and posting it on public servers...

Oh, I'm sorry, did you think Sony was somehow unique in their douchiness?

The Saturn was an expensive hard to develop for mess. That was Segas fault, not Sony. If anything Nintendo should buy them.

I hope not in all honesty. Yes Sega does not do enough with it's IP's and could do with a big hand, but Nintendo should be making this acquisition, their IP's fit together and are already integrated and their studio's know how to treat those kinds of properties well.
