Microsoft's Next Phone Could Cost as Much as an iPhone 6S

That's a lot of scratch.

A leak from a Spanish retailer shows Microsoft's updated Lumia, the 950 and 950 XL, will cost roughly the same as the iPhone 6S.

The now-removed link on Ecomputer showed both versions of the phone priced at €659 for the base model and €749 for the XL.

No Caption Provided

According to TechRadar, that's the same price as an iPhone sold in France, and the prices across the continent won't likely show too much disparity between member countries.

Microsoft's Lumia 950 and 950 XL will reportedly have 5.2" and 5.7" screens, respectively, and both phones will have a 20 MP camera.

There's a good chance that the Lumia 950 and 950XL will be officially unveiled during Microsoft's October 6 event. Press invites for the NYC event went out earlier in the month, and the Surface Pro 4 is expected to be the big reveal for Microsoft.

Only yesterday, details on a new Microsoft wearable fitness tracker that looks to be the follow-up to the Microsoft Band leaked.

Did people not expect flagship phones to start cost around $650? That's not just iPhone territory.

@Elranzer: That's Euros, meaning its around USD$720. The iPhone 6s and most other flagships start at $100 less, if you are daft enough to go for the 16gb model with no SD card expansion.

The app store is what really matters, as long as the windows app store lags behind the phone will lag behind, it doesn't matter how nice the phone is.

I hope this is not the case as I was looking to buy one of these new phones...but if this is true, it is not really news...just look at the surface tables...really awesome products and really expensive too...it is about showing people your products are amazing, why? because they are expensive.....Apple could sell their phones and tablets for half of their current prices, but then they would not be amazing super-hyped products....look at Android...you can have great, but still affordable products which run on Android...but the biggest Android seller is Samsung and their high end products ain't no cheap!

@kkdrummer: I think that this is just a placeholder. Usually, websites just prepare a store page for the product so that it can quickly put it up on their site as soon as they can confirm availability.

@kkdrummer: What you expected another 630/640 model? Sorry but no. They need a flagship phone and you're going to pay a premium for them. You want a lower grade Lumia go pay the measly amount for them. You want a flagship phone you pay for it.

sorry, but you are barking at the wrong tree. I have a Lumia 930 myself...My original comment was me expressing my thoughts on this article...I never said it was wrong/bad etc.....

I rank mobile OS like this: Android, Windows, then iOS. I like openness of Android and hate the restrictiveness or iOS. That being said the Lumia were great phones, but I'm a Nexus fan right now.

I assume this is a vendor placing a fictitious price in a yet to be released product. Otherwise, Microsoft is crazy. Their phones aren't bad but they cannot compete against the quality of Apple's ecosystem. Thus, they have to compete on price.

Unless this phone is slated to use the same version of Windows 10 that's seen in desktops, notebooks and tablets, it's gonna crash and burn.

Microsoft have figured out the secret to success. Slap a massive price tag on something, good or not, and you'll be rolling in dough. Bonus money if: it's a stolen idea, underpowered, looks fancy or is overhyped. Tick all the boxes and win lifetime fanboys. Apple's whole history in a nutshell.

If Microsoft does this, their, already little, grip on the smartphone market will probably collapse.

Why do I think this?
1. Microsoft's grip on the Smartphone market is not all that big because of sues.2. Nobody likes expensive stuff from Microsoft. People will probably want it to be the same or only a little bit higher.

Samsung has been my favorite brand of smartphone so far, I have had almost every single damn phone and the Note 5 is a beast, by far the most durable (doesn't crack a week later) amazing speed and it is great for games (I can leave Fallout shelter running almost all day, unlike with the Iphone, it would die in like an hour)

The new Windows 10 phones might be the phones to cause me to lease the Note series. If they offer full Windows integration and great features and tons of support, good battery life, performance, and an AMOLED display then it's bye bye Android.

FINALLY. I'm still rocking my 920 because nothing else feels as quality. Stock with 32GB and free Cloud storage that syncs across all devices? Cant beat it. I'll be upgrading to the 950 when it comes out.

@7tizz: I'm making a jab at the ads that are embedded in the featured articles on the home page. Ads are fine, but embedding them between links to actual articles is misleading. Obviously intentional and the ploy of a desperately sinking website unfortunately.

I'm very interested to hear about the 950 XL. My 1520 is great but it's starting to show its age.

Due to my poor vision, I need a phone with a larger screen and the 1520 was the biggest Winphone I could get. I've had Windows smartphones since WP7 and I don't plan on switching any time soon.

@muzza93: I'm praying that Windows 10 will fix the issues that hold back (useful apps) what I believe is a great OS for a phone. I used to have a fully functioning app for Bank of America but lack of users vs. the cost of keeping it updated killed it. That made me pretty sad. I can go back to my deactivated iPhone 4 and fire up the BoA app on that to use it...and that is just pathetic. I'm hoping that the new OS will gain some real traction in the marketplace; otherwise Windows Phone is dead. And that would be a shame.

@R4gn4r0k: The cost of maintaining an app for the Windows Phone is too costly for the number of installed user base. I've heard that it's less than 4%, worldwide. I've had to download an emulator to play Fallout Shelter for my PC to play it.

@geminij13: It's a vicious circle:

Few people are interested in windows phone because of lack of apps > fewer apps are made for the device because of lack of interst > Few people are interested in windows phone because of lack of apps > etc...

MS seriously need to step in. They made Two Player Studios game available on WP, they need to do it with more apps like Fallout too.

They'll likely be more powerful than the iPhones so it makes sense. My Lumia 920 was just as much as a new iPhone at the time and it is still close to Apple's latest phones.

@cfscorpio: I just recently upgraded to the Lumia 640XL from the Lumia 920. The only reason I even bothered to upgrade was for the larger screen on the XL. My 920 is still working perfectly as car's media player.

Why? That's a bit too pricey for a phone with less apps than either of the big guns and historically closed minded to a fault. Good luck, they keep trying but in time we will see if they will sever this want to be a jack of all trades master of none approach before the board lines Nadella up in their sights. This is a business and they must have projected a few things but uptake of Windows Phone even if they made it Windows 10 is still abysmally low and not actually increasing. So it's a wait and see what happens, did they drop the Nokia name from the Lumia yet?

The Sony Z5 effect, just like they planned it. Now all the makers want to have their own "very pricey" phone model.

@Sevenizz: It'll be released in Europe by the end of the year. But really, the strategy applied by Sony seems to be very interesting. By default, the "pricey" reference of a smartphone is the Iphone. And Sony declared they're decided to break that paradigm and become the new reference by releasing a truly super phone with... well, a truly super price hahaha. That will be the Z5 Premium (4K screen with more than 800ppi, to begin). The price of this Premium model will be around US$ 850-900, with 2 more models (standard and compact) around US$600 US$700, more or less. This strategy was applied on their audio players as well (the ZX2 selling for more than US$1000!!). So far, it seems a good branding strategy for smartphones, considering the wild specs of the Premium variant.

I'm willing to pay premium, if it's clearly apparent in the phone. I like to have nice things.

But! Are all the apps in there too? I see a lot of "available for ios and android" texts still today, with wiindows still missing.

I remember when people used phones to talk to people. For that price I'd just upgrade my cpu. On the plus side, it will hurt people more when I shoulder check them and they drop the phone they were looking at and not where they were walking.
