Microsoft's Twitch Rival Gets A New Name, Co-Streaming Feature, And More

The Beam service now has a new name--and that's just the beginning of what's new and coming to the service.

It's a big day for Microsoft's livestreaming service, Beam, as the company has announced a new name for the platform and rolled out more features for it that will offer a "whole new world of possibilities."

Starting with the name change, Beam is now called Mixer. In a blog post, co-founder Matt Salsamendi said it was a "tough decision" to change the name, and speaking to GameSpot, he explained that the new name aims to reflect how the service aims to bring people together. Overall, he says it's a "better name, better brand" for the platform going forward. Salsamendi added that he wants the service to expand to all major global markets and "that wasn't something we could do with the Beam name."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Microsoft's Twitch Rival Gets A New Name, Co-Streaming Feature, And More

No Caption Provided

For those just learning about Beam, it separates itself itself from Twitch and other livestreaming services with its interactive nature and low-latency. Viewers can interact with streamers to ask them to do things like go on specifics requests or really anything else they want. Salsamendi teased that Microsoft's Minecraft team is looking into ways to make interactivity through Mixer an official game feature, building on what some in the community have already done on their own.

As for the new Mixer features, the biggest and most notable is co-streaming. Available from today, the feature lets up to four people combine their streams into a single viewer, via split-screen, with a "centralized" chat interface. The feature is out now for everyone on PC and Xbox One, while Xbox One users will be able to invite friends to join a co-stream directly from the Guide in the "coming weeks."

The co-streaming feature doesn't limit you to one game or even the same activity (some people can play games, others board games, or cooking, or whatever they want), though you can do that if you want. Additionally, streams don't have to come from the same source--the co-streaming feature works with console, PC, and mobile streams at the same time.

Salsamandi told GameSpot that he "couldn't say" if he thinks Twitch will follow with its own take on co-streaming, though he's excited about Mixer being the only service out there that offers the feature. He also told us that almost every feature for Beam/Mixer has been at least partially the result of responding to fan feedback, and this is no different for co-streaming. The long-term plan for Mixer is to continue to add even more features and functionality, he said.

Here is a rundown of some of the other notable takeaways from the big Mixer news today:

  • A Mixer Create app for iOS and Android is out now in beta form. Right now, you can only self-broadcast, but the app will soon let you stream gameplay as well. "In the future, you could imagine streaming Pokemon Go on your mobile device, through Mixer, and hunting with viewers!" Microsoft said.
  • A new channel called "Channel One" will showcase a "wide variety of content," including new releases and special events, along with tips and tricks for game. This channel will always be online, and the content is moderated by Microsoft.
  • A Mixer Page is coming to the Xbox One dashboard. It will show the "most unique, popular, and engaging" streams that are live at any particular time.
  • Microsoft's E3 2017 briefing will be broadcast on Mixer in 4K for those with a TV that supports that.
  • Microsoft is launching a Mixer Studio at the company's flagship 5th Avenue location in Manhattan. A "state of the art facility," this digital production studio is designed for "live audience, competitive, and community gaming events."

19-year old Salsamendi and 20-year old James Boehm founded Beam in 2016, and Microsoft acquired the company later that year for an undisclosed sum.

M$ is just another Mr. "me too" coming fashionably late to the party trying to compete against other established brands, and has failed miserably. Xbox and Surface lineup are the only things going for it.

@urbanman2004: Whilst I won't disagree with the "fashionably late". Beam were already competing against twitch, hitbox etc before MS bought them out - difference is MS bought them out whilst beam is in its infancy. Companies in general have had products that haven't fared well either. It all depends on timing and whether the consumers buy in to it.

Bad decision. So the article doesn't mention how to get to the site now, what's the new address? MIXER.net??? The original was beam.net.

Note to MS: Changing the name wouldn't be a "tough decision" if you weren't changing it to something worse.

The co-streaming is really nothing new. You just would use multitwitch.tv

The problem with Beam, or now "Mixer", is that hardly anyone uses it. So, if you're trying to get in and make it, so to speak, as a streamer, it's not as populated as Twitch, causing it to be just as hard to draw numbers into your stream.

Maybe this will help Beam become more popular, but highly unlikely to make it serious competition to Twitch.

@thiskittygamez: Twitch kinda owns this market but I've always been frustrated at the streaming quality from it. It just isn't consistent. Beam so far has seemed more reliable. That combined with it's easy to access integration into the Xbox system with it's fair sized userbase should give it a boost.

The ability to multi-stream could become popular considering that we live in the over-stimulation generation. Having multi-stream in the stock app as apposed to requiring external sites or hacks to get this feature can't do anything but boost it's validity. I also like the fact that this gives us the ability to watch a 4 player co-op or Deathmatch from all perspectives.

I'm always pro multi-plat so to me this seems more like a pre-requirement as apposed to an addition, but then if that were true I would spend my time shaking my head at those who dared not go multi-plat, instead of cheering any time someone did. I'm just happy to see this here regardless of how much it gets used.

I think we all need to stop getting caught up in the corporate/sports mentality that if you're not number one then you're not successful. Only one can be number one but that doesn't mean that number 16 isn't living large. Smart moves like this can only help to increase Mixers userbase.

@preacher001: What I wonder is how Beam will fare when (if) the people DO come. More people means higher stress for the Beam servers. The service may only work well now, when nobody's using it, I think.

@lionheartssj1: the biggest difference is that beam or mixer has a lower latency than twitch. Now this is just my opinion / limited experience; I don't go or use twitch that often as I do find twitch to be bloated. As of right now beam isn't bloated, this may be due to the smaller number of people using the site. Again this is just my own experience / opinion.

Microsoft's inability to name products goes back more than 20 years at this point.... I'm a life-long fan of PC gaming, literally since its inception (Back when you could just call something what it was, or what it did, like Disk Operating System or Windows), but buy do their marketing people miss the mark repeatedly. :)

Zune is still the record-holder for bad naming, IMO.
