Midway Gets CART License
Midway announces a new series of arcade-style racing titles based on the Championship Auto Racing Teams license.
Midway Games has landed the rights to use the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) license in future racing titles. According to a company release, Midway has secured the exclusive rights to publish fantasy-style CART racing games for all major platforms and for the PC. The agreement runs through 2003.
"CART racing fits perfectly with Midway's trademark style of intensely competitive, great-looking, fast-action video games, and will be a strong addition to our other popular racing franchises, which include San Francisco Rush and Cruis'n," said Mike Ribero, executive vice president of Midway Games. "CART racing will also help us further expand our growing sports business with the first product that will tap the sports-oriented racing market."
Midway states that the CART games will include replica and fantasy CART tracks, and will incorporate CART teams and drivers. It was also announced that the first Midway CART coin-op game will make use of new graphics and animation technologies.
