Mighty No. 9 Review Roundup

Here's what the critics are saying about Keiji Inafune's Kickstarter-funded platformer.

After years of development and multiple delays, Mega Man and Dead Rising designer Keiji Inafune's Mighty No. 9 arrives this week across console and PC.

You play as Beck, the only one of nine Mighty Number robots that is not infected by a virus. Players must fight the other eight to ultimately uncover the mystery of what went wrong.

Mighty No. 9 was announced at PAX Prime in 2013, at which time the Kickstarter campaign went live. Crowdfunding was a quick success, eclipsing its $900,000 target in under 48 hours.

As alluded to, however, it wasn't entirely smooth sailing for the project after that. The game was delayed multiple times, and most recently, the head of developer Inti Creates publicly criticized a trailer that publisher Deep Silver made for it.

Ahead of its launch tomorrow, June 21, reviews for the Mega Man-inspired platformer have now come online. We've collected them here to help you decide if the Kickstarter-funded and at times controversial game is worth your time and money.

You can also visit GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a further breakdown of Mighty No. 9's critical performance.

As for the future of the Mighty No. 9 brand, Inafune has said he has ideas for a sequel, while a live-action movie based on the series is also in the works.

GameSpot -- 5/10

"For a game that's meant to bear the legacy of a classic series, Mighty No. 9 barely succeeds. It may rouse excitement from time to time, but by and large, it lacks a pervading sense of artistry, both in its level design and presentation. Platformers--and even Mega Man-like games in particular--are readily available. For one to stand out and leave a mark, it has to do something novel that speaks to the player and the conventions of the genre; something to spark wonder and excitement. Mighty No. 9 is an inoffensively average game sprung from the memories of the past, with little to show for its position in the present." -- Peter Brown [Full review]

IGN -- 5.6/10

"Despite its pedigree, Mighty No. 9 doesn't seem to have a good sense of what was fun about Mega Man, or 2D action-platformers in general. There are brief moments where its pieces come together, but even then it's hamstrung by its visually joyless art and animation. The soul of the Blue Bomber just isn't here, and worse yet there's no endearing personality of its own, and as a result, Mighty No. 9 feels much more like a second-rate imposter than a spiritual successor." -- Vince Ingenito [Full review]

Destructoid -- 6.5/10

"Following Mighty No. 9 has been one hell of a ride. Having backed it in 2013 at a low pledge level, I can't say that I'm exactly disappointed with the end result. It still has a lot of baggage to unload (the 3DS and Vita ports aren't even dated yet), but most Mega Man fans will find solace in the fact that it didn't end up being a disaster. Other than the art style, of course." -- Chris Carter [Full review]

PlayStation Universe -- 5.5/10

"Mighty No. 9 fails to recapture the spark of its Mega Man heritage in any meaningful way. There's not much inherently wrong with how it plays, but it is haphazardly presented and not quite as enjoyable as it could be." -- Neil Bolt [Full review]

Game Informer -- 6/10

"Mighty No. 9 was supposed to be the game that sated our long-starved appetite for a new Mega Man entry, but it instead just made me want to play the old games again. I still think there's room in the gaming world for a new, classically designed Mega Man experience, but it can't just be a faceless and creatively sapped clone. Games like Shovel Knight feel more like a spiritual successor than this half-baked misstep." -- Andrew Reiner [Full review]

Xbox Achievements -- 55/100

"If you've got a hankering for old-school platformers (albeit ones bastardized by a few modern conventions) Mighty No. 9 is a game for you. If you were going to pick it up on a whim because you fancied a taste of Capcom's golden age, you're better off looking elsewhere. Hardcore gamers eat your heart out, but don't expect to sleepwalk through this one." -- Dom Peppiatt [Full review]

To those nutters hating on Kickstarters projects: It happens with all projects, professionally funded or not. The problem here is Inafune's attention was all over the place. He didn't focus on just one project. He was working on Recore this whole time. And maybe Red Ash. Just an inefficient use of resources.

Now I have a little more respect for Shadow of the Beast, it's a better call-back, and more faithful than this to its legacy. Manages to be cheaper as well. Plus, from the looks of it, is a better retro experience, even if only by a small margin.

As for KickStarters, BloodStained. Backed it, and know I'm gonna enjoy it.

That is all :)

@RSM-HQ: Unlike this, THOSE devs don't seem to be trying to develop a bunch of different games at once.

@Barighm: I'd agree but that was Comcepts greedy choice. I mean is your argument even justified for this stinker? No.

A good developer that wants success takes priority, and does the best they can with each project. Considering the time and money Mighty had, this is pathetic!

MN.9 had a long-ass development cycle, and they clearly spent it and the money on other projects. Most of which are also mediocre if Yaiba Z is anything to go by.

I hope people will finally get burned badly on this game and finally realize that KS is one huge scam and never invest in any KS project ever again. The KS itself made enough hundreds of millions on nothing already.

@Ripper_TV: The following are Kickstarter funded games: Torment, Wasteland 2, Hyper Light Drifter, Divinity: Original Sin (GoTY), Shadowrun Returns, The Banner Saga, SHOVEL FRICKIN' KNIGHT.

Your ignorance is showing. Do cover up.

@7tizz: You sure it didn't have something to do with MS driving a dumptruck full of money to their door and ordering them to do Recore instead? 'Cause that does happen sometimes.

Now, I know some of you had your expectations of how this would turn out but why are you celebrating that you were right?

This is not a victory for you or for anybody. Would this game being good not be something to celebrate? If the game is bad that means we all lose, and to celebrate that...

Well, I just don't know what it says about us as gamers. We really don't want the best for people do we?

And the lesson of the story? You can't go home again.

What was great almost 20 years ago just doesn't resonate.

I was thinking it would score a 9 for sure given its name, but unfortunately for Inafune, reviewers actually played the game.

@ketsuhige: Don't recall even the classic MegaMan games or MMX games getting that high of a score here. The most it would've scored if it were up to snuff would be either 7 or 8.

@karenwen: true, but I thought that since this game is meant to be MM's spiritual successor, given how we haven't seen one almost since the Clinton administration, I thought living up to the hype would earn the game a 9+ score.

What a shame. I was really excited when Mighty No. 9 was first announced but all the problems during development turned me off. This does not bold well for Inafune's other games - Recore & Red Ash.

@peekaboobs: We've gotten a whole bunch of amazing games from crowdfunding that we would never have gotten otherwise. Just because this game is a flop does not diminish the countless others that were not.

@DeathNoa: Worst example, because that game was already made pretty much by the time they did a KS. Better ones would be Pillars and Wasteland.

I'd need to see more gameplay, but that boss fight seemed pretty Megaman-ish. I don't mind if it's not exactly the same, it's not supposed to be, but as a spiritual successor it should be similar. From what I can see, it is, but maybe that's just because only some parts of it is.

I'm willing to give it a shot.

Edit: Although I'd rather see it on a handheld platform, like the 3DS.

These scores pretty much reflect my own judgment when playing that 2-stage demo they quietly released for PC.

Totally "meh" the whole time. Felt like a PSP-calibur Mega Man imitator; like they took the leftovers from Mega Man: Powered Up! development and made its own game.

Go play these instead:

Shovel Knight

Rogue Legacy

Volgarr

Unravel

that reboot of Strider

...or we can get into the Metroidvania end of the spectrum, like Guacamelee, Ori and the Blind Forest, and the BEST since Super Metroid, SHADOW COMPLEX.

@Pyrosa: Strider HD gets far too much hate, it's a pretty good game on the side. And arguably Capcoms best download game since Bionic ReArmed.

I'd throw in Dragon's Crown if you have a Vita/ PS3. It's the best Golden Axe inspired game I've ever played. Oh and Castle Crashers :)
