Minecraft 1.5 coming in 'roughly two weeks'

Lead designer says long-awaited Redstone update will arrive in early March.

Minecraft lead designer Jens Bergensten has confirmed that the 1.5 update to Minecraft, known as the Redstone update, will be released in early March.

No Caption Provided

"Minecraft 1.5 will be released in roughly 2 weeks, early March," said Bergensten on Twitter.

The Redstone update was announced at Minecon 2012 last November and will bring numerous fixes to the game, including a new rendering engine and support for HD texture packs. There's also a tweaked inventory system, a scoreboard, and more detailed death messages. The Minecraft wiki has a full list of planned changes.

Last month it was announced that the Minecraft series has now sold more than 20 million copies.

I sort of feel like Minecraft has lost it's way. Nothing revolutionary has happened since they added a hunger bar and an experience meter. It's still good... but they definitely need to step up their game to keep people interested.

@Suikogaiden no, people likes it because it's original and different, and you can NEVER get bored with all these mods it has.

In my experience, the people who have an extreme dislike for this game tend to not be very intelligent. They don't posses any kind of creative or analytical ability, nor the attention span, to create something bigger than a 5x5 square house.

I get that not everyone can get into a game where you must actually think, where the enjoyment only goes as far as the imagination and skill of the user, but even still, running around forums and bashing people who like this game is really just like walking around with a big sign that reads "look at me, I'm a moron".

@rice2555 I think that's a tad too harsh to say. Admittedly, I played for a month and enjoyed mining and killing creatures. My issue was with my lack of artistic talent. I did enjoy building a rudimentary skull out of the side of the underground mountain bunker that was my home, though. I had underwater rooms and a glass floor over lava. Nothing really to post on YouTube, mind you, but I had fun with the month or so that I played it. Nowadays, I just play with my gf's little sister as she digs straight downwards, but she has fun doing it!

Not implying that *I'm* a moron, but I'd like to think I'm a pretty smart guy. I can build a computer, I just can't fix a car. But I just sorta became "meh" to the whole Minecraft experience because I just don't feel like making a working computer out of redstone :P.

What I'm getting at is: don't call people morons for not liking this game. Some people would rather destroy things a la Bad Company 2 rather than build in their off time ;).

@drswank He was refering to people that have an "Extreme Dislike for the game". To the point where the troll forums to bash it and anyone who plays it.

@rice2555 @Sekhemket @drswank Yes, there is only so much you can do in the game. If you do what the game is intended to in which that is survive then the game gets really stale.

@Sekhemket @drswank Pretty much exactly what Sekhemket said. I myself used to play all the time but since got tired, ran out of ideas, and didn't want to mine another million blocks of stone to make some new castle.

I was just interested in noting that, from my own perspective, it takes a rather unimaginative person to not even be able to see what someone else may enjoy about the game.

@Hardizla You know that if you don't like something you should kindly leave others who do alone, that is just polite you know.

good article, but regarding to the few first paragraph, creating emotional games doesn't need top notch tech, amazing graphics , fluid animation , etc. it require heart more than anything. look at "To The Moon", it was created with RPG maker but the story is so engaging and emotional

I never understood the need for people to insult Minecraft. I'm not a painter, I do not like working with paint or a canvass but I'd never go tell someone that enjoys painting that painting is stupid and not fun. Then proceed to insult that person for enjoying working with paint.

Minecraft is the same way, for people that are creative and like to build things the game is insanely addictive. Not to mention you can get together with your friends and build unbelievable worlds plus the 1000's of mods that add all kinds of crazy stuff to the game.

Just recently a group of guys finished a map with Bioshock's Rapture built into it.

@Sekhemket People hate on Minecraft just to hate on Minecraft. The same goes for Notch. I don't even understand why, but I guess it is the "cool thing" now to hate on things that are popular (Minecraft, Call of Duty, Apple, etc.).

@Ultra_Taco @Sekhemket Notch is very easy to hate. I love Minecraft, but I can't stand hearing about him or his cult of personality. It's very possible to love a game and not give two shits about the people behind it. Jeb seems pretty ok, though.

@highlanderjimd It's escentially Lego, except you need to find, extract, or create the blocks you want, plus maps are randomly generated so you're constantly in a new and unfamiliar environment and there is a sense of danger to the expliration. If anything, at least try it.

Sweet, I like the how they have separated all the textures into individual files now. Instead of one giant file. Now we can easily pick and choose which textures we want from each pack and build are own custom ones.

@Sekhemket I agree, previously I had to manually edit the borderlands texture file to have water from a different pack. Now it will be considerably easier.
