Microsoft-owned Mojang is working to remove a fraudulent Minecraft game from iTunes.

As Eurogamer reports, a game called Minecraft Pocket Edition 2 was recently released on Apple's store--but it's not made by Mojang and isn't much of a game at all. Despite that, the $7 game (same price as the genuine version) raced to the top of the top-grossing charts, reaching No. 4, though it's since fallen down.

Pocket Edition 2's official description sounds good enough, saying players can explore randomly generated worlds and "build amazing things" in true Minecraft form. The description even contains a link to a trailer for the real version of Minecraft's Pocket Edition.

However, Eurogamer installed Pocket Edition 2 and found it to be nothing like Minecraft at all.

"Minecraft: Pocket Edition 2 is a terrible top-down swipe game in which zombies attack Scorpion from Mortal Kombat," the site wrote. "I bought it and spent a few minutes 'playing' it before it crashed my iPhone. If it isn't already obvious, don't buy it."

The creator is listed as "Scott Cawthorn," a misspelling of Five Nights at Freddy's creator Scott Cawthon. Some other games released by "Cawthorn" include what appear to be illegitimate Five Nights at Freddy's and Mortal Kombat games.

At press time, Minecraft Pocket Edition 2 remains available to buy on iTunes (where it has all five-star ratings), though Mojang is hoping that won't be the case for much longer.

"It's great that Minecraft has inspired people to create amazing things, but when a product attempts to dupe our community or exploit their enthusiasm for the game, it's our responsibility to step in," Mojang's Owen Hill told Eurogamer. "Our dedicated enforcement team are extremely busy!"

Microsoft and Mojang have talked about eventually making a "Minecraft 2," but this is not it.

@RogerioFM: when I was a kid - I loved Lego's, creating cool things piece by piece so I kind of understand where all this love for Minecraft comes from. Not only kids enjoy it but also grownups. I myself tried MC, but found it kinda boring, not really into creating stuff anymore. But modded MC, adding challenge to the game, new gameplay mechanics - whole new experience. Loved playing modded MC.

@ShepardCommandr: You assume he lives in a country where he can be sued; however, I don't see any reason whatsoever why Apple can't withhold payment and then redistribute the funds to the proper rights holders. If they're like everyone else, they withhold payment for a good long while.

Is it really "Minecraft 2" if the 2 is above Minecraft? In english that's "2 Minecraft" which doesn't mean anything. Because in America we read left to right and buy games that are clearly bad clones.

I need to get into the "scam games with a name that has nothing to do with what they are" business. They could make millions. And it's 100% legal! It's crazy!

Meanwhile Apple doesn't give a damn, they'll only care when the original IP holder finds out and files a complaint. Apple and Google Play will happily take a cut of all the copyright infringement games that slip through the cracks. The mobile market is trash and there's nothing that can be done to redeem it short of burning it all down to the ground and starting from scratch.

All the dumb-dumbs that bought this game deserve to be ripped off. Who just buys a game without researching it first, hell even a quick google search? These people are lazy mobile gamers who have too much money and not nearly enough knowledge to handle anything other than some simple swipes. I guess that is fine to an extent, but it is breeding a culture of inherently shitty gamers that will in time destroy the gaming culture we have worked so hard to create and enjoy.

@GH05T-666: It's not "hard" in the sense that they moderate. It's "hard" in the sense that you have to pay for it. It's like $250 or something. I forget the price, but it's something like that. That's about it.

For a good scam $250 is chump change when you can make way more off idiots by marketing your game as something it's not.
