Minecraft Creator Won't Be Involved With Upcoming Event Over His "Comments And Opinions"

"His comments and opinions do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang and are not representative of Minecraft."

Game developer Markus "Notch" Persson, who created the Minecraft franchise and sold it to Microsoft for $2.5 billion USD, will not be involved with the franchise's upcoming 10th anniversary celebration event. A spokesperson for Microsoft told Variety that they are excluding him due to his "comments and opinions."

"His comments and opinions do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang and are not representative of Minecraft," a representative told the site.

Now Playing: Minecraft Cross-Play Trailer

As part of Microsoft's acquisition of Minecraft and developer Mojang, Persson stepped away from the series. The Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that this remains the case; he hasn't worked on the franchise since he sold it to Microsoft years ago.

Microsoft did not point to any specific comments or opinions from Persson that led to his exclusion from the event, but a number of his tweets and comments on a variety of subjects have garnered criticism.

Persson reportedly owned 70 percent of Mojang, so he could have made more than $1.5 billion in the Microsoft buyout between cash and shares. He spent $70 million on a Beverly Hills mansion that Beyonce and Jay-Z were also eyeing.

Persson's exclusion from the May 17 Minecraft celebration event in Stockholm is not the first instance of Microsoft distancing itself from Persson. In March, an update to Minecraft removed a reference to Persson, though he is still listed as the game's creator in the credits.

As for the upcoming Minecraft event, it aims to give fans a look at the "past, present, and exciting future of the decade-old franchise."

Minecraft remains one of the most popular games ever. Available on basically every platform that plays games, Minecraft has 91 million monthly players as of October 2018, which is many millions more than Fortnite has.

Personally, I think some of Notch's tweets are spot on. Filthy progressive/pc culture has ruined many things and many people. Not saying the man is without his flaws.... The same people who hate Notch are the same people who hate people like Pewdiepie, Sargon of Akkad, and Trump.

Uh obviously his opinions don't reflect Microsoft, he's not Microsoft. Still pathetic to exclude him. You think you're Konami or something, Microsoft?

The guy created the base Minecraft game in less than a week. It was pretty basic work. He's been well paid for that week of work and he gave it up. It is nothing now like it was when he worked on it. I love Minecraft but Notch is a disgusting human bieng. Creating Minecraft doesn't change that and enjoying one doesn't require me to have to put up with the other. I hate it when "Famous" people think their celebrity somehow makes their pathetic views more relevant and acceptable. And he's about as low on the scale of famous as you can get despite his money.

@bdrtfm: Is there anything you won't defend Microsoft over? A "disgusting human being"? Yikes, dude.

@Thanatos2k: Please point to the part of my comment where I defend Microsoft. I'm not defending anyone. I'm dissing a dirtbag. See the difference? I couldn't give two sh*** who shows up at some stupid Minecraft Celebration. Defending them is pointless. So is getting mad at them. It's their game, they get to invite who they want. Not us. Notch sold the game. It's no longer his. That's not a Microsoft defense, that's reality. And yes, he is a disgusting human being. Take 5 minutes to read some of his tweets and come back and tell me he's a really nice guy. Racism. Homophobia. White Privilege. Wealth Entitlement. Just some of his favorite topics that he supports. You'd think he was born a billionaire. Him selling Minecraft is the best thing that ever happened to it though. His idea of a major update was adding snowmen after a two year wait....

@bdrtfm: It's clear he insults people online, just like you just did on this site, so.....? Links please of your claims. The one above had nothing of the sort and was from a trash website. Also, please don't post anything out of context like it means anything.

@Thanatos2k: Dude, I'm not going to argue with you as to who I think is a dirtbag. It's my opinion. You don't have to like it or even read it. I cannot begin to make myself care enough about this to prove to you that he's a dirtbag. I'm sure you are capable of using Google and researching the things he has said and what most people think of him. I mean, what's your reason for not thinking he's a dirtbag, because he made a video game? Big deal.

@bdrtfm: I did. I found no real evidence for your claims. Hiding behind "It's my opinion so it can't be wrong" is awful sketchy now.

Your attempts to minimize his hard work on the game are also rather shameful.

ALERT: Wrongthink detected. Initiate exclusion program.

I'm sure he's going to cry himself to sleep using bank notes as tissues. We all know Notch made the game, excluding him doesn't change that fact.

Dissenting opinions seem pretty hazardous now-a-days.

The creator, the reason the game exists, isn't a representative of Minecraft? Microsoft should just have Notch attend but don't give him a mic, leaving him out to stay in the good graces of people who hate his twitter posts is stupid.

@superdoyle1: That's not what they said. They said his comments don't represent the opinions of Microsoft or Mojang.

Notch is too red pilled to fit with a politically correct company like Microsoft
