Missile Command sets sights on big screen

Variety reports that Atari will executive-produce film based on its Cold War-era arcade classic.

This coming July, Missile Command will celebrate its 31st birthday. This week saw the venerable arcade title in the spotlight for a different reason. According to Hollywood trade Variety, the title is being adapted for the big screen by its publisher, Atari, and a major motion picture company.

Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has taken on the project, which will have the dubious distinction of being based on a game with no storyline. Screenwriters Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula: Year Zero, the upcoming Flash Gordon remake) will be tasked with crafting a plot from the Cold War-era game, which sees players defend cities from incoming nuclear missile strikes. The game has sold 20 million units to date on numerous platforms.

The Missile Command movie will be produced by Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark via the former's Chernin Entertainment. The production label is also producing the forthcoming Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes, which is due out in June.

Atari president Jim Wilson will serve as Missile Command's executive producer. The title is just the latest game adaptation being produced by Atari, with big-screen versions of Asteroids and Rollercoaster Tycoon also in development.

Fantastic news! I really cant wait for this, and only hope its true, as we have yet to witness a movie based solely on the premise of a city coming under attack by an incoming missle threat, that can only be thwarted by the use of some well placed Missile command posts. How inspiring........

I suspect that 20th Century Fox is hungry for film projects with video game inspirations - ANY projects. Missile Command has been around for decades - and only now 20th Century Fox is thinking of a venture with it? I like to think that 20th Century Fox couldn't get the other big-name publishers to agree to film collaborations involving the latter's money-making franchises. Last on their list is Atari and the original Atari's very old games.

After seeing the Street Fighter (It's okay only if you forget it's based on a game. [FYI, I'm talking about the Van Damme/Julia version.]) and Super Mario Bros. (How did Nintendo ever green-light that!?) movies, let's just say I won't be first in line to see many more game-based movies (if any).

It sounds silly, but it's actually pretty easy to work with a game that has no real plot and based on a real-world scenario. If video game movies didn't have a spotty record, I'd have some faith in this.

Good thing is they can't screw up the storyline, all you need is some missiles and a way to stop them. Didn't Flash Gordon already see a remake a couple of years ago?

And this is why I hate Hollywood...... they allow such travesties as Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat Annihilation and now this...... What's next after these plans? Tetris the movie??

This is just a ploy to get publicity for the movie from gamers. There's no way you could make anything that would hold anyone's interest for more than a few minutes with the content in this game.

Used to love this game when I was a kid.However...I really don't find a movie adaption to this game,in this day and age,as something anyone would really care about.
