Just over a month after he was given a lifetime achievement award at the 2007 Game Developers' Conference, Shigeru Miyamoto was honored again. The venerable game designer was among the 200 nominees for Time's 100 Most Influential People of the Year, an annual list that compiles the movers and shakers in politics, science, media, sports, entertainment, and technology.

Following reports of his nomination, Miyamoto surged ahead in Time's online poll. So it was not entirely surprising, then, that when the results were announced today, the artist affectionately known as "Shiggy" was among the top 100. His tribute, written by professional PC gamer Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendell, is listed among the "Builders & Titans" section of the top 100. Other luminaries in the category include Apple and Pixar CEO Steve Jobs, Virgin group CEO Richard Branson, Toyota CEO Katsuaki Watanabe, and Philip Rosedale, founder and CEO of Second Life-maker Linden Lab.

[UPDATE] Given the fact that Miyamoto's tribute page is listed as being "92 out of 100" on the Time.com Web site, many have presumed the designer was near the rear of the influencer pack. However, the number is merely an organizational list, not a numerical rank. If it were, the most influential person on the planet would be 30 Rock star and former SNL-er Tina Fey.

Of course the Wii is going to be selling like crazy, it costs $250, if you priced either the 360 or the PS3 at that price, the Wii would be dead in the water. I just have this feeling that the Wii is going to be a fad, it won't just totally disappear but the hype will go away. I mean it really sounds enticing that you can buy a new gaming system for only $250 when the others cost $400 (you can't do **** with the core 360) but to people like me who play a lot of games, after a few hours of swinging the controller around, it gets boring, very boring. And I also have to look at last-gen graphics, which is definitely a huge downfall. When it comes to talking about how its a bunch of things that you already have in one, I can guarantee you that most people dont have a blu-ray player, something that WILL be in most homes in the future. Blu-ray had it's first movie (Casino-Royale) sell over 100,000 copies in only 9 months, two months faster than it took the first DVD to reach the same mark. Also to get what the PS3 has in terms of processing power, a majority of people don't have that in a PC either. Of course it seems like a lot of extra stuff but when you own one, and you have free online play, the ability to store music, photos, movies, download movies, download games, go online, and have soon to be great online system (Home, that looks to be very good, and a potential system seller for the PS3) you have something that is worth way more than only $600. It also doubles as a PS2! Sure some games don't play, but a majority do. Just think, it costs sony $840 just to make the thing and they sell it for $600, and when companies sell things don't they try and make a profit? Basically everyone who has one knows they just got a great deal, and when you look at the line up of games coming out (the ones that aren't even system sellers like KH3, FFXIII, MGS4, GoW3) you know that you made a good choice. If microsoft was smart, they would have made the HD-DVD standard in all their systems. People would have either had to wait for the PS3 or a Wii if they didn't want it but people would have still bought it. It would also have switched how the race between Bluray and HD-DVD is going, which really could have left Sony for dead. And if you really want to get down to price, the only one worth it out of the Wii and 360 is the Wii. The Wii has innovation, a lot of it, while the 360 is just an upgraded last-gen console. It has been stated that Gears of War maxed out on the 360, which is pretty sad because right now we are seeing the best PS2 games not PS3, PS2. So it took them a year to get the best of the 360, where the PS3's power will never be fully exploited. So back to the price point: PS3- Blu-Ray Player, Wifi, 60gb HDD, Card Slots, HDMI, Total =$600 360- System($400) + HD-DVD ($200) + Wireless ($100) + 40 more gigs ($180) with no HDMI = $880 Oh and for all the 360 owners, MS just gave you the shaft with the 360 Elite, because you basically should get a whole new system instead of buying the 120gb HDD for $180, when I can get a MUCH cheaper laptop hard drive for my PS3. Sorry this is so long, I just need some release when all I see is the media bashing the PS3. Every person that I know that has one, loves it and doesn't regret buying it one bit.

When I was voting for him, he was 3rd place. And Rain was far far deeper. Colbert was first and no one could topple him. What the hell happened? Dane Cook!? Sanjaya Malakar? God, Americans can't read.

What is this world coming to? On a side note: I hope it wasn't for the Wii cuz that crappy paperweight isn't worthy of being called a next generation console.

Ya, that written tribute really sucks. It's more about himself than Miyamoto himself. Very disappointing.

Good choice. Nintendo is really responsible for the re-surge in console gaming after the crash in North America, and after many have tried (Atari, Sega, NEC, and possibly soon Sony, etc.) and failed, Nintendo is still going strong.
