Miyamoto explains why 3DS Pikmin prototype was canned

Handheld versions of Nintendo's strategy series Pikmin couldn't work because of control issues, says Miyamoto.

On the eve of Pikmin 3's release on the Wii U, legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained why Nintendo canned a handheld prototype of the strategy series for the DS and 3DS.

No Caption Provided

"The truth is we were doing prototype tests of Pikmin for the DS and 3DS but it turned into unit management with only the touch pen and no matter what it just didn't seem like Pikmin," explained Miyamoto to 4Gamer (translated via ONM).

The problem, according to Miyamoto, is in the game's controls. "We concluded that Pikmin is a game that revolves around action based on its controls and the strategy sits on top of that. Although there are elements that are built on the strategy, there are other overall things that have to be well considered. This complete experience is an important element of Pikmin."

While the Pikmin prototype didn't meet Miyamoto's expectations on the 3DS, the designer says the Wii U's GamePad makes the latest entry in the series accessible. "[Pikmin 3] may seem difficult on first glance, but once you try the controls, it's easy. Even if you find using the pointer difficult, there is a control method using the GamePad similar to the previous GameCube titles that we'd like people to utilize. To that end, we hope people are able to look at this as a carefree, easy action game."

Pikmin 3 will be released in North America on August 4. The game is already available in Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Pikmin 3 landed at No. 2 in the UK charts after its first weekend on sale.

Real reason why it was canned: They needed to milk mario more since that'll make them more money than this game

@ZWarrior006

*Looks at the line up of 3DS games and sees upcoming games like Pokemon X/Y, Legend of Zelda, New Yoshi's Island, along with the recently released Animal Crossing*

Sure Mario & Luigi's coming out (or out already) but just like many other Mario franchises, those only appear once per platform.

Considering the number of 3DS titles alright available and still coming, don't really see a problem with this. Wonder if it added much time to the development cycle though...?

The 3DS is doing fine. Glad to see games not come to that handheld. My Lord Nintendo get a brain and realize you need more and more exclusives on the Wii U. It will only help sales.

On that note .....

Should have done tests like this before you released that travesty Star Fox Command on the DS. You had to steer the Arwing on the touch screen. That shit didn't feel like Star Fox.

Would it have been better if the 3DS had 2 analog control circles? The Gamecube had 2 analog sticks for the first 2 games

@Megavideogamer the 3ds can support a second analog stick, but it makes more sense to release the game on the wii u.

Not everything should be both handheld and console. That way, there's a reason to buy one over the other. It's good for business.

Is it because the lack of the second analog nub? LOL

Nintendo will soon release a 3DS with a second analog nub and then later a 3DS XL with a second analog nub.

@chazy035 They could put a virtual circle pad on the touchscreen if it doesn't take up too much space.

No they won't because it'll render the previous 3DS's obsolete, alienating the userbase and pretty much screwing with developers. I'll let you figure out why that would happen.

That would not happen, Nintendo Fans are too loyal and will almost buy anything that Nintendo will throw at them for at least an incentive... Ambassador Plus program?

Ohh you'll forgive them, eventually. The thought of a second analog nub would be too irresistible to pass up and a trade-in program to boot. You'll be like a stuck up whiny snob for a bit until everyone you see and know is carrying one. What if Nintendo brings all their colors to the US? Or perhaps a white or translucent 3DS? All finicky fanboys would eat that up right away. Besides, the right analog nub would usually act as the left directional pad in most games. Also did the original DS had DSiware or a camera? no it didn't, nor it alienated the "user database" or the developers. I traded my DSLite for $99 and just had to pay extra $50 for a DSi that's like buying a console game that anyone will probably beat in a week.

Nintendo will keep on making mistakes but unlike Sony and Microsoft they seemed to be easier to forgive when they throw out things like Majoras Mask, new Metriod, or Another Mario game will be compatible with the built in second analog nub.

Uh no, that's stupid for anyone to think that. If that's the case, then why didn't SEGA get away with doing something like that?

Also, what makes you think all 3DS owners are some huge Nintendo fan that would automatically buy up the new 3DS? I'll tell you right now that I sure as hell won't.

@komuchen @Chico86_basic @chazy035 Pikmin 3 doesn't use the gamepad second analog anyway just like when it played on GameCube I heard. They probably were not satisfied with the results on the 3DS. I'm just saying hey, what do we know right?

...I don't get it, I had the wii one of the second and the wand plus A button worked fine, circle pad+one button would of worked wouldn't it?

If camera is an issue assigned one button as a camera switch you press (or hold), I don't get what's so hard, I know there are other functions that'd work with the other buttons as well...

I see this as an excuse to buff up potential wii u sales, a pikmin light would of been fine and serve as a paid demo teaser of sorts for the wii u one, come up sony did this with gran turismo, it worked fine and I liked it despite it being a bloody demo XD

That would've been a great move. Release the game on 3DS which alone has ton of games now and is doing great, instead on Wii U, which is struggling for games.

Also, can you imagine game like this on small 3ds screen, or better yet DS?

I don't know why, but sometimes I have a feeling that Nintendo actually hates Wii U.

@Chico86_basic @Poinciana It requires a stand because the controls are so bad it's painful to play otherwise.

A stand. For a HANDHELD CONSOLE.

@brainiac1988 @Mugzippit *Puts tin foil hat on* Maybe Nintendo gave IGN a copy much earlier and also gave them a chunk of money to give it a great score, but Gamespot didn't agree on this so they only got it some couple days ago?

The only RTS I've seen on the DS/3DS was FF12 Reverent wings and while that game was great fun, it was so slow paced in combat to make up for using the touch-pad to control that I doubt I'd ever pick up a RTS for the handheld again. I'd like to see how Pikmin works bringing RTS onto the game-pad since I haven't seen an RTS on a console that could be played anywhere near the ease that the mouse/keyboard brings.

Ok putting aside the fact that NA is the last region to be deserved with Pikmin 3 (Thank you very much for your region s*** Nintendo !) I still can't understand how they didn't took more adventage of the gamepad for this title.... Ok it changes the game focus, and so what ? They just had to adapt the game in consequence, they're just showing us that the gamepad was in the end a bad idea and that they should have focus on a more powerfull system instead.

@Sampawende Firstly its not like NA got Fire Emblem Awakening two months before any other region (We all got in in April, and that includes Japan, while you got it in February ) so its not just you.

Secondly. if Nintendo didn't have region locking, they would probably make every region wait until it was ready for release globally so we all would have had to wait for the NA region was ready otherwise they would risk mass importing and that would screw up their sales figures for each region. So we got this one a bit earlier in the EU, I'm sure other games will have earlier releases in NA soon enough and EU gamers will be whining about it.

@Mugzippit When you're well prepared and organized, global release does not affect your deadlines and even if it was, there wouldn't be a problem or it wouldn't matter as everyone have the same release date.

No matter how hard they'll try, I do not take that BS of region locking, this is a form of control no more no less, they have to change their plans and calculations accordingly because when you think about it, what really matters when you apply region lock if it's not retail price ? We've seen it with sony selling the ps2 at 500$ in the US and 500 euros in europe, like $ and euros was the same....

Many business plan based a gobal release are working, it's just a matter of will, plus people wouldn't import if they could buy the game on time at the store next to them.

@Sampawende @Mugzippit If every region was identical then yes but each region is different in a multitude of ways and is therefore going to be ready in its own time and the game should be released when it is ready. Other regions should not have to wait because another isn't ready (In this case EU is ready, US isn't). Saying that if your well prepared/organized enough is just wrong since it would either force a region to rush the release or delay the release.

For example we have 4 regions EU, NA, JP & AU. Each region is different so odds are 3 of those regions will be ready before the 4th is so those regions will have to wait for the 4th for the global release. If the 4th region rushed release to be ready at the same time there could be other issues that crop up with a rushed project that cause more problems then its worth to release earlier for everyone

As for region locking, if your viewpoint is "I just want complete freedom no matter the cost" then your doing the worst possible thing. Region locking gives each region independence so they can release when they are ready instead of having to delay release until other regions are ready. The Illusion that having no region locking makes things more open for players is just going to slow the release of games down. I do agree that the drawback is that each region gets its own pricing which makes gaming unfairly more expensive in some regions but price discrimination is far older then just gaming. If there are legal or logistical reasons behind the higher price then I guess that is our fault for electing our government and living in a difficult to reach area but hopefully shifting to digital copies will reduce that difference heavily.
