Miyamoto Vetoed Plans to Make Hyrule Warriors More Zelda-like

Developer Omega Force initially wanted to introduce more traditional Zelda elements such as complex dungeons.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's talismanic game development director, overturned proposals to design Hyrule Warriors as more of a Zelda-like game.

Hyrule Warriors was developed by Omega Force, a studio famous for creating a distinct style of hack-and-slash action with its Dynasty Warriors series. But when producer Yosuke Hayashi discussed with Nintendo his plans for Hyrule Warriors, he wanted to move away from the Dynasty Warriors template.

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma explained to Nintendo Life: “At first, when Hayashi-san approached me, he wanted to make this title closer to a Zelda game than a Dynasty Warriors game – that extended to having boss battles in the dungeons and [having] certain characters in the game.”

It was only when Miyamoto, the creator of Zelda, stepped in that plans were reversed.

Aonuma elaborates: “However, Miyamoto came along and up-ended the tea table, saying, 'no, that should not be the case. What we’re doing here is grafting Zelda onto the Dynasty Warriors experience’."

“It was a reversal of the original proposal from Hayashi-san, which was adding elements of Dynasty Warriors onto the Zelda franchise. It ended up being the other way around based on Miyamoto’s direction.”

Hayashi spoke of trying to "strike that balance of making a game that Zelda fans will enjoy that is different from a typical Zelda game, that has enough elements that people will enjoy but also not losing Zelda fans".

He added: "We ourselves are Zelda fans as well, so we had to ask ourselves the question of what is it that makes a Zelda game, and how many of those elements do we need to include. Up until the very end, we kept adding different elements to the game until we struck a balance that we were happy with."

Hyrule Warriors is a Wii U exclusive that will release across Europe on September 19, and in North America on September 26.

I know this is an old article, and hopefully people have tried the game out by now. I have to say, being about halfway through the legend mode so far, this game is absolutely fantastic. I was really, really skeptical at first, but after playing it for a few days, this game is surprisingly fun and engrossing. The storyline is 100% pure Zelda and even fits into the Zelda cannon very nicely. The gameplay can be somewhat repetitive in areas, but as you progress, the enemies become more varied and the strategies start to really get more complex and interesting.

The first few stages just introduce you to things like the bow and arrow, bombs and boomerang, but then they start mixing it up for you so have to quickly switch to B&A to take out a deku baba, then switch to bombs to get a beamos and then try not to get hit by the fire coming from an aerealfos (or whatever they're called), all in the same "keep" area. It gets really crazy and fun! Pure action and very little puzzle-solving, but still awesome and fun (there are a few puzzles involving the hookshot and finding every skulltula and heart piece, by the way).

I would really recommend trying this out - the videos don't do the game justice and don't even mention the storyline, which is really amazing and fun to watch. My only complaint is the system of merging weapons, which is confusing and seems rather pointlessly complex, but I love the level and badge upgrade system and really like trying out different characters in the same scenario over and over to see which one works best against certain bosses. Try it out! :)

I don't understand why they are even doing this, or why anyone would even want to play this.

Zelda is awesome, but Dynasty Warriors represents the most mundane and irritatingly repetitive gameplay in existence. To try to take something as intricatly designed as zelda, and mix it with this garbage is just ... disgusting.

I really don't get the plan here. If the target audience is (us) DW fans (I am a rather huge one of them, IMO this is the perfect modern beat em up), why do they release so many DW games in such a short timeframe? There's the DW8 extension, then Samurai Warriors 4 and Orochi 3 Ultimate, all of them offering a huge amount of content.

While I do get all of those listed, I don't see myself getting this Zelda thing as well, because it looks kinda dumbed down. The selection of different characters looks like a joke for a dw game and seeing Link killing 1000s of enemies just doesn't feel right.

For me personally I wish it was more Zelda simple because I'd play it then. I am not interested in DW at all so I'll take a pass on this. I'm not mad though.

I agree with Miyamoto. Let this be more of a Dynasty Warriors revamp. Let Nintendo be in charge of the dungeon/puzzle aspect of Zelda. Any attempt by Omega Force to recreate dungeon crawls would cheapen the Zelda experience.

Good call by Miyamoto. An actual Zelda game is already in the works, we don't know need two on the console merely a year apart from one another. By letting people experience Dynasty Warriors gameplay whom might not have played the regular DW games, it may produce enough demand for full DW games to come to the Wii U as well. And more third-party support is something the Wii U could definitely use, though their first-party line-up is strong and Bayonetta 2 and X: Xenoblade Chr. look solid.

<< LINK REMOVED >> At first I was against Miyamoto's choice, but then I thought about it again and I agree with you. We already know that there's another Zelda game in the making, and should just leave the complex dungeon elements to Nintendo itself.

I just hope that the "boss" fights on the field are more difficult and require some more thinking and skill than compared to the DW ones, where you can just button mash and beat them.

It's not a bad plan. The Dynasty Warriors formula can be very fun.

I want this to be a spin off game and not an actual Zelda game. I am looking forward to playing an action packed button masher in the Zelda universe. I hope to enjoy it like I enjoyed Metroid Other M(are great spin off, but not a great Metroid game) But I do not want to see a bad Legend of Zelda game done by a 3rd party that ruins the series.

Well, I think a Dynasty Warriors game with a Zelda skin makes more sense then a Zelda game with Dynasty Warriors influence. I really can't imagine what the latter would be like. Walk into a dungeon room and get swarmed by hundreds of Deku scrubs?

I think this was a good decision. Even though a bad Zelda game is better than a good Dynasty Warriors game, after Skyward Sword we can't have anything but an outstanding Zelda game next.

It would be great if they could include voice acting for western release, I'm too distracted by the horde of enemy and the colorful graphics to read what the heck they were saying !

So if people complain that this is just a Dynasty Warriors reskin, we can blame Miyamoto for the game being that?

@ShonenNinja that sounds about right.

Played the Demo fun game but the enemy pop up is bad. You would wipe out a group think the monsters are all dead and be like why is there still an alert in this area. You have to change view/ run about to allow the rest of the monsters to spawn. The game is on a timer so it makes it even worse.

It should have been called Zelda: Hyrule Warriors for marketing reasons. Like that guy who left Nintendo recently said, a name alone can limit your sales.

Wii U should have been called Wii HD and would have avoided a lot of confusion.

I hate the Dynasty Warriors franchise... The gameplay and the characters (including enemies) in these games are so over the top dumb (not in a good way, imo) and "B-Movie-esque", it's pure trash... God, I hate these games!

That being said, the existence of this game (Hyrule Warriors) won't have an impact on my love for the Zelda franchise... instead, I choose to pretend this never happened.

I will also continue to hate on the Dynasty Warriors games (with a passion, but peacefully), because they're garbage.

Gracias. Merci. Danke. Whatever.

I know that all the Zelda fans are complaining that this is too much of Dynasty Warriors and not enough Zelda, but can you really imagine trying to navigate complex dungeons designed by Omega Force? And with the controls and camera that are problematic even in their button-mashing games?

Actually, you don't have to imagine it. Go play the dungeon segments of Ninja Gaiden on Xbox and you'll see what it would be like.

That's kind of lame, because when the game was announced at E3, that's what I thought it would be. A Zelda game with crazy over-the-top combat. A Dynasty Warriors game with Zelda characters is totally cool too, but I feel like Miyamoto wasted some potential there. Then again, he also ruined Paper Mario, so it's not a surprise.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door are two of my favorite games of all time.

But then Miyamoto got involved with Sticker Star, and he convinced the devs to dumb the game down, ditch the story, remove all RPG elements, etc.

Makes sense. People would look at it like it was a bad Zelda game if the original plan was followed. Instead its almost a Dynasty Warriors love letter to Zelda. It also adds a needed action game to the Wii U library. We already have WWHD and TP and SS to keep us busy until next year.

Nintendo has really taken the awesome Zelda franchise, beaten it up, added a few knocks below the belt, dragged it through the mud, spat on it, then proceeding to urinate all over it. What a mess, Nintendo's desperation knows no bounds.
