Miyamoto worried over abundance of gun-focused games

Nintendo designer says ubiquity of gun-oriented games troubling for younger generation, claims digital media presents "difficulty" for parents.

Gun-focused games are some of the most commercially successful and widespread games in the industry, but they are not appreciated by all. Famous Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN this week that he's concerned regarding the ubiquity of weapon-oriented games.

Miyamoto is worried too many gun games can be a bad thing.
Miyamoto is worried too many gun games can be a bad thing.

"Sometimes I get worried about the continued reliance on making games that are so centered around guns, and that there are so many of these games," he said. "I have a hard time imagining--particularly for young generations of gamers--how they sit down and play and interact with that."

Last week, Miyamoto said he wanted to make a first-person shooter, but noted he does not have enough time to do so. He explained that if he were to build a first-person shooter, it might be different in structure than typical FPS games, and perhaps not particularly violent. He said he was specifically enthused with the idea of a game that allows players to look around and fully explore a 3D space.

Miyamoto further explained that Nintendo remains committed to creating a "safe environment for kids," with special attention paid to the online space. The Mario and Zelda creator added that the rise of digital mediums like video games has created difficulties for parents.

"Previous forms of media, like books, made it easy for parents to know and understand what they’re buying for their children," he said. "With the transition into digital mediums it becomes more difficult for parents to have a full grasp of what's going on. From a game developer's standpoint it's important to take that into account."

I'm more worried about Nintendo's consoles that can't keep up with the current generation.

@fredwv You mean like the Move and Kinect can't keep up with the Wii right?

So violence against mushrooms and turtles no problem. Violence against simulated people suddenly we have issues. They are games not social commentary. Leave any notions of censorship to the parents and stop worrying about what the kids might take away from games they aren't or shouldn't be playing if any one is checking the ratings on the box. And an FPS that wouldn't be "particularly violent" sounds BORING AS HELL.

He's wrong, plain and simple. The funny thing is, when Pokemon and Mario's sales numbers dominated the industry, he had no objection whatsoever to violent games, at least not as openly as he does now.

Fast forward to 2012, in an era when FPSs are all the rage, he starts to complain about the possible "harms " these kind of games might cause. Give me a break.

From what he says it seems like he would like make a game like Portal. If that does happen, then I'm gonna very happy.

@AndCarlsen Portal isn't really an FPS. It's a first person puzzle platformer. Technically the portal gun is a gun but it's really just a puzzle solving mechanic.

@AndCarlsen Portal was without a doubt one of the best series this generation easy... possible most-to-all generations. To see Miyamoto put his spin on it would be absolutely fantastic. I would automatically go for day 1 purchase.

@masterds64 I'm 14 and I played a lot of shooters. That didn't turn me into a heart-less killer or an immature brat. If parents know how to educate their children well then they shouldn't have a problem with them playing shooters. Although he is right about the abundance of shooters this gen.

He's right, folks. Killing people/creatures with swords, bombs and arrows is a lot more righteous lol Guns are the modern day killing tool, as opposed to medieval weapons, so games that focus on modern times use them. Violence is violence, and it's a huge part of our culture as a race whether you accept it or not. Combat involves violence, so when you incorporate conflict and confrontation in a game, that results in violent scenes unless you dumb it down for younger audiences, but today the average age of gamer's is 30, so live and let live. Education starts at home ;)

@Zackarias-313 You do realize that there is big difference between Mild Cartoon Violence and Intense Violence. From what you're saying a game like Zelda is the same as Resident Evil. If it were like that we aouldn't need a rating system.

I enjoy all types of games, including FPS, but sometimes I do feel like there is an overwhelming number of shooters being produced. At a certain point they all start to feel the same. But as long as games are fun and innovative, who cares whether you're toting a gun, a sword, or a fireflower?

What does he mean he has a hard time seeing kids playing games with gun? It's just a game why are people so obsessed with this idea that violence in video games will make us serial killers. The human race is not a bunch of dumb monkeys 99% of us can differentiate the difference between hurting someone in real life and in a game. Anyone who cant is going to run into problems regardless of video games.

It's an industry that has grown up significantly. Such as the rise of adult oriented games. Thankfully there are now parental lockouts built into game machines so parents can control game content on their kid's machines.

Miyamoto should make his FPS. It would be good to see what he would create. Instead of just wondering about the effects of current FPS on the younglings of 2012.

I thought this before this generation started. These days, protagonists have far more guns than ever before. Glad Shiggy said something. As fus as they are, designers are getting lazy. I would love to see more characters not holding a gun to solve their problems. Batman AC, Rayman, LBP 1/2, and Infamous come to mind for instance. Want more of that.

@deadruler08 At what point did it say anywhere that Miyamoto approves of gun focused movies? He's actually not a hypocrite, if you read his bio you would know that Miyamoto is very strict as to how much play time his own children get with video games. When he says he wants to create a safe environment for children, Miyamoto means it.

You were just looking for an excuse to bash on Nintendo's new console, your motives are as transparent as glass.
