MLG CEO challenges Twitch, says streaming content creators can make more money with them

Major League Gaming CEO Sundance DiGiovanni says that premium content creators can earn more money on MLG.tv than through Twitch.

Last week popular streaming provider Twitch released released a "Twitch 2013 Retrospective" report chronicling some of the achievements made in 2013, including 45 million unique viewers a month, and over 12 billion minutes of content watched each month.

Prior to the report coming out, MLG Founder and CEO Sundance DiGiovanni spoke to onGamers in an interview about their new platform. Specifically, DiGiovanni was asked why streamers would prefer to stream on their new platform than on Twitch.

"It's harder to broadcast on right now, but they'll make more money," said DiGiovanni. "They'll make significantly more money. It's not one-button streaming, but it's not meant to be either. The key to it is: If you produce live content, have a meaningful audience, and want to make money off of advertising, our numbers are far stronger at the moment. Based on what we've seen on our content on both and what we've heard from partners."

DiGiovanni says there's more work to do be done in regards to features beyond monetization.

"In terms of it being better in any other way, I think the global reliability is really solid. I'm not going to say it's better because I can't speak to that. In terms of the image quality, I think it's great, but I'm not going to say it's better. In terms of chat, I think we have some work to do to figure out what we want to do there but right now. Twitter chat does a lot on the social side, but doesn't do a lot in terms of the real-time exchange that people are used to."

DiGiovanni says MLG.tv will host content around Dota 2, StarCraft II, League of Legends, Super Smash Bros, and Call of Duty. Professional Call of Duty players and popular YouTube producers such as OpTic Gaming and Curse Gaming are some of the initial partners on the site.

"With the launch of MLG.TV, our current partner roster is definitely Call of Duty heavy, " said DiGiovanni. "The community is very active and has grown exponentially over the last few years making it easy to work with and identify partners that make sense for the MLG network. There is a large appetite from both a streaming and viewing perspective for Call of Duty content and the community is extremely passionate. As included in the COD Championship Series announcement today, we are also partnered with Activision and all COD Championship broadcasts will air exclusively on MLG.TV and Xbox Live."

The full interview can be read on onGamers.

Everytime I've watched a big event on MLG.tv it has been laggy and full of ads up to the point I bought premium access so I wouldn't have problems. Well, even then the experience was bad. Twitch.tv is no stranger to problems but they're rare. Of course this is just my personal experience.

Anyone thinking of using twitch to stream Diablo 3 when it comes to ps4 and x1? Been playing on the ps3 and was kind of hoping to see something like that to happen. What do you think EQN steaming? Or maybe even when ESO comes out. I know I won't be able to get ESO, but being able to view another players game on the PS4 would be pretty cool to drop into once in a while.

Around 80% of gamers who view online stream content either use browser/3rd party ad block. These are the estimates i have heard. Now we have twitch, who is for the masses at around $5 per CPM (thousand views who watch ad), and now MLG.tv at $20-$30 CPM for players, and around $40 for event organizers. That gives a much broader PREMIUM content base. We see the largest Call of Duty players such as Nadshot who has 440k twitter followers and 1 million YouTube subscribers, or Prosyndicate 1mill twitter followers and 6mill youtube subs jumping on board, or partnering at the time with MLG. The reasons behind MLG isn't to overtake twitch in terms of broader base, but just to be able to have an ability to monetize, sell content and ads from within, to turn a profit. With their ad block abilities, and coding abilities for embedded ads, and the premium content providers they are bringing forward. It gives, and breeds competition. Why anyone thinking a single company having complete control over game streaming, and not having competitors step forward to maximize profitability is reckless at best. Not only grows the competitive base, esports scene through gamebattles or mlg website hits, but helps branch out to provide event organizers a better way to monetize their efforts, And the ability of MLG to do regional based ads and sell the marketing/advertising demographic potential to new partners and new sponsors.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Of course they will, they are a business.

Do you think Twitch doesn't take any money? They take HALF of all subscriber money. And a lion's share of the ad revenue as well.

The irony of this is that the MLG wouldn't be as popular as it is without twitch, but I guess it goes both ways.

I don't doubt that the bigger names may make more money there, but while MLG is a popular brand, Twitch is insanely huge as far as streaming goes. It's kind of like Origin going up against Steam. Yeah, people might use it and give it a go, but it's tough to compete with a juggernaut.

Since I'm not a massive fratboy douchebag, and don't stream for the "incredible wealth", I think I'll stick with Twitch ta.

MLG tv has no chance against twitch its one of the situations where its far too late to hop on the bandwagon. Twitch is like an avalanche right now and its gonna crush anything in its way. Also people are making a ton of money on twitch through just donations.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Twitch could be facing tougher competition, unless they actually keep improving the service. More than a few times, Tournaments have lessened the experience for other streamers. I watch a variety of streams there, but not the competitive ones.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> MLG is gonna be even more competition focused though then twitch. esports is whats driving the streaming craze right now so it only makes since that's what attracts the most viewers. Twitch never really tried to be for that but that's just what it sort of naturally evolved into. I think streams of all sorts do well on twitch though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't really understand this mentality of mocking the people who participate in these things. Obviously, all of us here play video games to some extent. And then there's some who get paid to play professionally. Sure it's not football or some actual physical sport, and the whole "eSport" moniker is kind of... ehh, but they're still competing in a highly competitive environment and doing something they love. I don't really see anything wrong with that. That's not to say there aren't a lot of douchebags at that level, as some of them are pretty whiny and childish, especially when they lose.
