Modern Warfare 4 May Be 2019's Call Of Duty, According To A Dev's Tweet

More modern warfare.

If the established developer rotation for each Call of Duty continues in 2019, then Infinity Ward is next. Infinity Ward's senior communication manager Ashton Williams send out a tweet back in January that featured a skull, which may hint that it's Infinity Ward at the helm this year and that the next Call of Duty may be Modern Warfare 4.

Since Infinity Ward is the developer behind Call of Duty: Ghosts, many first suspected the tweet was teasing Ghosts 2. However, Kotaku's Jason Schreier has since claimed in a forum post that isn't the case. Prior to Ghosts and Infinite Warfare, Infinity Ward was responsible for the widely popular Modern Warfare series. Fans may recall that one of the major characters from Modern Warfare 2, Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley, wore a skull-patterned balaclava. Williams' tweet may be in reference to that, which could mean there's a Modern Warfare sequel starring the character scheduled for 2019.

Now Playing: The Evolution of Call of Duty

However, considering the popularity of Modern Warfare Remastered, Williams tweet could instead just as easily be a hint that a remaster for Modern Warfare 2 is in the works as well. Infinity Ward released Modern Warfare Remastered alongside Infinite Warfare, so the developer could be planning to do something similar with whatever new game is planned. This is all conjecture though, and the tweet could just as easily be a tease for a brand-new Call of Duty series that has nothing to do with Modern Warfare.

Treyarch's 2018 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was the first game in the franchise to not feature a traditional single-player campaign. Instead, Black Ops 4 included the franchise's first battle royale mode, titled Blackout. However, this year's Call of Duty will see the return of a single-player campaign.

As long as whatever the next iteration is has Spec Ops again and does away with zombies (or anything like it) I'm probably in. Otherwise I'll pass just like I did on BLOPS 4

Modern Warfare was the last Call of Duty I played personally. A return to it would probably be special for sure.

We didn't actually have a World War 3 in 2016/17 so perhaps it would be something of an alternate history?

We already know that I.W. ended with an air of WTF & what next... it only makes since for Infinity Ward to drop the sequel to Infinite Warfare for closure or commit to an ongoing campaign

Whatever COD title it is, there's just 2 things I'd like to see with it: 1 - Get rid of zombies for at least ONE year. 2 - BRING BACK SPEC OPS!!!!!

I mean, there were reports about it being Modern Warfare 4 months ago, so this ain't news. That being said, it's stupid since MW3 ended fine.

Anyway, I got no hope for Infinity Ward, their last two entries were trash.

@xenomorphalien: COD:IW was amazingly good, both single player and multi player. Ghost was pretty bad in multi, but decent single.

@shadowwarrior4: I wouldn't be surprised if it's another one with no campaign. What's the point of making it an entry in the MW series if it doesn't continue the story? Same with Black Ops 4, it doesn't progress anything in that series's story

@nsignific: I believe Red Dead Redemption 2 beat Black Ops 4 this year, but that game was a Juggernaut launch.

@thelostscribe: BLOPS4 outsold RDR2 by year's end in the US at least (NPDs). RDR2 only beat BLOPS4 in November, not overtaking it overall. A bit weird talking about those two games in 2018 as they only released in October, but still managed to top the charts for the year.

In any case, the idea that COD is somehow dead or dying is laughable.

@nsignific: I thought I read somewhere it was the other way around, but on Google I can't find any definitive article about it, just that Red Dead outsold in October or November. Either way, as you said, for being released in the 4th quarter of 2018, they shifted mammoth units.

Also yes, I agree, saying it is dead is definitely wrong. That said, the last Infinity Ward, while selling over 10 million units, was considered a let down to Activision(wut). There may be signs of series fatigue, but the longevity of this series has been impressive. I was sure COD would have been dried out by 2012(like Activision did with Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero before it), but I guess having three different developers on a three year development cycle has been insanely successful. It would be the difference between the other two series, who I believe, only had one developer working on the main entries.

@thelostscribe: I think it helps that COD is part of the most popular genre of games (multiplayer) FPS, rather than niche (THPS) or even fad genres (Guitar Hero).

@nsignific: That's true, but Tony Hawk was absolutely huge for a long time. I think you can only do so much with a skate genre, but I do believe had they given the series time to breathe and put out follow ups with meaningful improvement, it may be around today. They also tried going the Guitar Hero/Rock Band route with the skateboard on the floor which I heard was terrible. I believe Neversoft was making both Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk. The head of the studio near the end of the Guitar Hero series actually said in an interview 'If they could just give us two years, we could make a great game.'

I feel like both series just suffered from over saturation. Guitar Hero was putting out new iterations every year on every platform they could, I remember they even put it on the DS. Had the games been given chances to breathe, long term support of one game via song DLC, the genre would probably not have burnt out so fast, but Activision really seemed determined to drain that lake as fast as possible. Both series suffered from constant releases and lack of innovation.

With FPS though, of course, it's so popular that once you free the series from the shackles of identity and players just accept that COD is just a really tight military FPS with tons of MP levels and now Battle Royal, it has been a recipe for immense success.

COD series went to hell after they fired Vince Zampella and Jason West. Ironically those two went on to make Respawn Entertainment and the Titanfall series which was vastly better than all these COD reskins. But then again, they left from the 6th level of hell and joined up right down to the 7th level with EA so RIP them.

I didn’t know there was going to be a next call of duty game. Given that they made that battle royale one to jump on the multiplayer cash cow. Can’t blame them. I mean a company has to invest in where the money is. But to players like me who played this series for the single player experience (and I seem to be in a minority often ridiculed) that was it for the COD series.
