Molyneux says next Xbox 'not nearly as exciting' as 360

"I just want the next Xbox to be a great gaming machine," says former Microsoft Game Studios creative director.

Games industry legend Peter Molyneux has said that Microsoft's imminent debut of its next Xbox won't be "nearly as exciting" as when the publisher unveiled the Xbox 360 back in May 2005.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to the BBC, the former creative director of Microsoft Game Studios started by dubbing 2013 the year of the "console hardware refresh" and said that "although [the next Xbox is] exciting, it's not nearly as exciting as when the Xbox 360 exploded onto the gaming scene just over seven years ago."

"Back then, the 360 represented a huge leap forward in gaming, with a tangible increase in performance and fantastic multiplayer support. Gamers and game-makers were justifiably super-excited," added Molyneux. "Now it is that time again, but the world has changed."

Molyneux--who now heads up indie studio 22 Cans--points to the growing tablet and mobile markets and their frequent hardware updates as one of Microsoft's challenges with its next console, adding that "on the horizon looms Valve with its PC-based Steam Box."

"Thereby hangs the problem for Microsoft: how to justify its new console, how to get us all excited."

Its competition is no longer Sony and Nintendo, but rather Apple, Google, and Samsung.

While Molyneux says Microsoft "won the last console generation," he adds that the publisher has always seen the living room as "the big prize" for the Xbox. "When I used to work at Microsoft the key phrase that I used to hear bandied around was the next Xbox should be 'input one' on people's living room screen."

"Nowadays I'm an independent designer and I just want the next Xbox to be a great gaming machine."

Molyneux says Microsoft's next Xbox "should have great connectivity, so I can play spectacular games with my friends and be sold at a reasonable price, perhaps around $300 (£200)."

"That should be Microsoft's goal rather than persisting in trying to make it a box for everyone," he concluded.

Microsoft will unveil its new hardware today at 18:00 BST/10:00 PDT. GameSpot will be covering the next-gen Xbox unveiling live from the company's Redmond campus.

@Gegglington Being that the next gen xbox can play 360 games they could keep making them for a year or two.

@aloufika Frankly I give no fucks about these applications either. I have multiple computers and multiple consoles. If I want YouTube, I do it on a phone or computer. Give me a GOOD RPG TO PLAY. Seriously, because this gen had 0 good RPGs (excluding oblivion and skyrim and fallout - I mean a traditional JRPG type of game). Or give me real survival horror.

@aloufika well then sony seems like your choice as all there tecs will be 100% on developing a gaming console unlike microsoft pointing out there tecs to maybe 40% .... a console that is for entertainment rather then gaming & just a box that can also play games is not appealing as there not focusing on gamers but stuff you can already get on your smartphone, laptop and mostly all tv's now days whats the point?.. bad choice and move for microsoft as they should be focusing much more on gaming & us gamers. Thats the whole reason of buying these consoles just ludacris what they are doing in my opinion

@aloufika Please - if today's systems didn't have multiple features, you'd say it was a rip off.

@Sevenizz @aloufika The only reason these consoles are expensive is because all those stupid add-ons... Why not make those optional, like those goddamn DLCs that almost every friggin game has nowadays?

I wanna buy a gamming console to play games alone. I have my smartphone and my PC for social purposes...

I never really got how the 360 was that big of an upgrade over the original Xbox - maybe in terms of features and online content, but in terms of gaming - it wasn't that much different. The original black Xbox was an amazing machine...especially compared to the PS2 and Gamecube. I really hope the next Xbox is an amazing machine - I already plan on it being my living room entertainment machine since the 360 did a good job of it. I fail to see how they can make a bad machine.

@Sevenizz Uh. you mean other than being way more powerful, way bigger hard drive, way better XBL, way more games, standard wireless controllers, HDMI, better everything, and not being able to kill a puma with it (which is a downside I guess)?

XB1 was certainly good for emulators, and XBMC. It definitely had good games too but everything about the 360 is better. It's jut unfortunate they have shit legacy support when it comes to putting those games on XBL.

@Sevenizz I actually liked the gaming more on the Xbox 1 than the 360. Mainly because I liked the games back then in general, and matchmaking wasn't such a priority back then. The days of searching for servers and joining the best one are behinds most of these games

@dman123_1 Rainbow Six 3, Ghost Recon 1&2, Halo 2, Crimson Skies, and even a handful of less than popular games that had Xbox Live capabilities were some of my favorite games ever. The 360 somehow misses on that charm and it got too big. Don't get me wrong - I still like the 360, but something is missing. And no, I know the PS4 and WiiU don't have what it's missing - so I'm not even bothering.

@Sevenizz @dman123_1 YES!!! I have spent so much time on Rainbow Six 3. It was so much fun, I've have met most of my friends i currently have on my list off that game. PGR 2, Phantasy star online on the xbox, just classics. last gen was really a good gen. Gamecube PS2 and the Xbox all had shining moments. Maybe the games are missing substance, maybe the community wasn't like it once was, maybe it's a little bit of both.

You know, after talking to a bunch of people outside of the internet, I realize that people actually really like all the features MS has on the 360. I can't even blame them for having it. Plus, so many things are becoming multimedia devices. There were a time people complained about phones not being just phones anymore, this is just progression of technology and it is something people will have to accept

@COPMAN221ISBACK You have a valid point being that "hype" master Peter is disgruntled. However, it has always been MS long term goal to have a multi-media machine in everyone's living room..operated by windows. By the looks of it, it's coming to fruition. I think that is why Peter has become disgruntled. The ethos and what MS want and what he perceives as a gaming system. If he doesn't want all that malaky, then develop for the Wii U. They share his ethos on gaming.

I agree with him somewhat. I want my consoles to be gaming machines first and foremost. I don't care about Smartglass, Netflix, Facebook, etc. All those apps and cross-media interfaces mean to me are that my consoles are now bloated with things I have no interest in.

It's a matter of taste, is all I'm saying. Hell, I didn't even care that my PS2 could play DVDs. I just want great games; I don't need a console trying to be multimedia center.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Molyneux. These consoles are just trying to be everything-machines and you know for a fact that a lot of the launch event later today will be dedicated to that. Leave the smart phones, tablets and PCs to be everything machines. Media capabilities are a good thing, like USB media, disc media support and video service apps, but don't put emphasis on it and leave it at that! Also if you're going to introduce music services, we're only interested if we can use them in games. I think Sony has a better idea this gen.

In story after story they tell us about the looming superiority of mobile gaming, about people's desire to always play with legions of friends...

Really? Is that the way most gamers feel? I want superior single player experiences. MP games can be fun but I spend such a tiny fraction of my gaming time there... and mobile gaming? Gamers aren't moving to mobile gaming; non-gamers are playing games on their phones and tablets. That's different. Much like with the Wii mobile gaming is attracting people who don't normally play video games. Our demographic isn't changing so much as people who would never normally buy a console suddenly find themselves playing Angry Birds...

@Uesugi-dono I'm inclined to agree with you. As you said, it's not that gamers are gravitating towards these mobile devices, it's that non-gamers are eating up these bite-sized games in droves. All the industry sees are that these smaller games are exploding in popularity.

@shingui5 @Uesugi-dono @dman123_1 @Yomigaeru ok, good point. I see too many people do the whole fake vs real gamers and apply that to people who play COD hardcore. But to the original post, Mobile gaming has come a long way. there are quite a few games I could actually sink hours into playing. MMO's, shooters, sports, RPG's, etc etc. Plenty are on these mobile platforms and performs quite well considering they are touch controls. As far as people wanting to play with their friends, people feel that the experience is much more enjoyable playing with friends. I can agree. Plus, there is a huge replay value in multiplayer gaming. I know too many people who will finish a SP game and trade it in or sell it to someone else. I suppose as these games expand, there will be much more possibilities to have a game with a great single player and great multiplayer

@shingui5 @Uesugi-dono @dman123_1 @Yomigaeru - And you're right; nothing in the world wrong with more people playing games. My concern is the industry; owned and operated by 'non-gamers' is muddling mobile gaming and traditional gamers together and that could have a negative effect on the latter. We've already had the disturbing trend of 'always online' bandied about. Blending moble and console gaming together has the potential of subtracting what a good number of gamers actually enjoy in games; solid single player experiences

@Uesugi-dono @dman123_1 @Yomigaeru defining what a gamer is, or even a 'real gamer' is, is a pointless exercise. People play games, we shouldn't be trying to weed out the 'casuals' from the 'core' gamers, instead we should be happy more and more people are playing games in general.

Saying that, there are people who will mostly play mobile games, and people who stick to the consoles/PCs. Industry people, like good ol' molyneaux here, sees the rise of mobile gaming - a rise i might add that has followed the rise in smartphones - as something of a coup by mobile games, where mobile games will eventually reach prominence and outshine the consoles/PC market. It's nonsense, plain and simple.
The mobile market is booming, that there is no doubt, but that doesn't mean mobiles can't exist besides consoles/PCs in their own sphere of influence. The fact that mobile gamers tend to attract people who would never touch a console, is evidence that lends itself to this idea.

@dman123_1 @Yomigaeru - Ah, I knew that would be a trigger word. Let's define gamer as someone who games as a hobby. That's most of the people here, I'm sure. My wife pours hours into what I call "Tap Tap" games on her Ipad; constantly tapping jewels, raising dragons, always waiting for a time limit to run out so she can do more without having to buy more jewels or such with real money. If you ask her she is not a gamer, despite spending 'countless hours' playing these games. Therefore she is not a 'true' gamer.

I use to like Molyneux but slowly this guy has gotten on my nerves. Not because Fable never lived up to his dreams. I can't fault a guy for wanting to making amazing games and thinking big.

So he created the God game genre... What else exactly makes him such an expert in the industry? He's been mainly a part of a pretty focused group for a long long time making very specific games.

Yet he talks like a grizzled veteran that’s seen it all. If he was so vastly experienced in the industry why did his games so often miss the mark or end up in niche markets?

I liked him better when he dreamed big and kept his opinions on other people's work to himself.

Many people already know what to expect. The only games on Xbox are multi-platform or some exclusive that's being milked to death.

Casuals would be excited to play their 15th Call of Duty game, anyone else who plays games for the experience should not even consider Xbox for a second.

Anyone willing to buy a nextbox at launch needs their head checked after the rrod bs. I'm not going anywhere near a microsoft launch console. I wonder is the nextbox will have a cheap plastic tray to put your game in like the 360. Hell the controller will probobly still need AA batteries. Oh and don't forget $60 or more a year for live.

Oh c'mon Angry Birds VS Gears of War ????

Wonder what number would come up if the people behind Angry Birds would publish the playtime in the game , and not how many times it was downloaded....

Same goes for the rest of them "crap"ware, let's face it, I to download all sorta stuff on the iphone, android to check it out, to pass time for like 5 minutes when I'm bored.... but besides that those games can't compete with a console or pc's for that matter.... it's like comparing some Italian serials to Huge Hollywood blockbuster movies...

And I don't care about connectivity, I just want quality games , better graphic... possibly the removel of achivements, and that stupid avatar thing... and all will be fine.

If I want to connect with friend I'll use facebook like the rest of the abnormals, I don't want no company to force it on me...

Man I wish people would shut up about tablets and smart phones.

If I wanted to play a 15 year old game or shoot birds accross a screen at some blocks Ill get a tablet. If I want to sit in front my 42inch TV and play increasingly (albeit slowly) epic games I'll get a console or PC.
