Monster Hunter Portable 3 ships 4 million

Capcom's nine-month revenues grow 41.6%, profit spikes 294%; Dead Rising 2, Super Street Fighter IV, Lost Planet 2 all sell-in 1 million-plus.

Capcom can't seem to lose when a new installment in its massively popular Monster Hunter franchise is on the docket. Today, the Japanese publisher reported impressive nine-month results that were boosted largely by the PSP sensation Monster Hunter Portable 3, as well as assists from Dead Rising 2 and Super Street Fighter IV.

Who says PSP games don't sell?
Who says PSP games don't sell?

For the nine-month fiscal period ended December 31, 2010, Capcom reported net revenue of ¥70.77 billion ($866 million), a 41.6 percent increase compared to the same period a year ago. Profit for the period saw a monstrous increase during the April-December period, rising 294.8 percent to ¥6.84 billion ($83.7 million).

Capcom cited Monster Hunter Portable 3 as the cause for the hoopla. Having launched in Japan on December 1, the game has now shipped more than 4 million units in that territory alone. Dead Rising 2, which released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September, has topped the 2 million-unit shipment mark. Meanwhile, Super Street Fighter IV continued to perform following its April bow, shipping 1.6 million units.

Including the sales of Lost Planet 2, which Capcom noted continued to underperform despite shipping 1.5 million units globally, the publisher has thus far released four games this year that have broken the million-unit marker. For the nine-month period Capcom's gaming segment saw sales grow to ¥54.06 billion ($662 million), with operating profit coming in at ¥12.94 billion ($158 million).

@vgdude887 That's what I'm wondering, I mean 1.5 million sounds like a success by most standards. It wasn't 5+ million like RE5, but that's a decent amount. I think the problem there (aside from annoyances with leveling up, responsiveness issues and cheap deaths) is that you basically HAD to have a full party of people who knew what they were doing in Lost Planet 2, and it's hard to get ahold of 3 other people who can cooperate well. Like another poster mentioned, it focuses on cooperation. It's a thing of beauty when it works well, but a lot of the time it doesn't, and that's when you feel stabby.

Hey, it's cool that Capcom is profiting a large margin off MHP 3 and that's in Japan alone.. but could we get an english version already? What's going on?

MH is so awesome because it encourages (and requires) a deep rooted cultural phenomenon called "cooperation" with three other players. That element of cooperation tied with the themes of defeating large monsters that are destroying the landscape, and creating cool looking armors and devastatingly large weapons to eliminate those monsters is what's so addicting. The portable series just manages to take all of what makes the console series (since the PS2) so popular and effectively "shrunk" it onto the PSP. It's an experience that should be tried by all and decided by yourselves. This is one series most Western critics missed completely (until MH3 on the Wii). Also in Japan, TV Tokyo just piloted a TV show about Monster Hunter shown late night which I documented briefly (check MHP3rd forums on GS for more info if you're interested).

It's a sad show of how different the Japanese and Western markets have grown when Monster Hunter does so phenomenally well there and bombs here. Similarly, Lost Planet 2 was basically Monster Hunter with guns and it bombed, relatively speaking. I guess it must have had a big budget for 1.5 million units to be considered a failure.

Gee, monster hunter sure is popular in Japan. I wonder why the "western" world don't like it as much...
