Monster Hunter World Will Add New Monsters As Free DLC

The hunt never ends.

Capcom had already confirmed that Monster Hunter World will receive an assortment of DLC following its release, including a set of Horizon: Zero Dawn gear and Mega Man armor for your Palico. That won't be the extent of the DLC coming to the game, however.

In an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu (via Gematsu), Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto revealed that Capcom plans to continue supporting the game following its release by adding new monsters. Tsujimoto didn't share any details on what kinds of monsters players can expect or give a time frame for when they will arrive, but he did confirm that the monsters will come as free post-launch updates.

PlayStation 4 owners who are interested in trying Monster Hunter World before it releases still have an opportunity to do so; a limited-time Monster Hunter World beta is going on right now for PS Plus subscribers. The beta ends at at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM GMT on December 12 and features three sample quests in the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste levels. The monsters you can hunt in the beta include the Great Jagras, the Anjanath, and the Barroth. Players who complete all three quests will earn "some useful bonus items" in the full title when it launches.

Monster Hunter World releases for PS4 and Xbox One on January 26; a PC release is slated to follow later in 2018. You can read all about it in our Monster Hunter World review. Capcom still hasn't announced if a similar beta will be available for Xbox One and PC. However, the company did share a new trailer for the game during Sony's PSX stream last week, which showcases more of the game's story, as well as the aforementioned Mega Man armor. You can watch that trailer above.

Ill be honest I havent really played any of the MH games, but I decided to the give the beta a go. Visually especially in 4k on a pro it looks amazing, but in every other aspect this is garbage. It has the worst gameplay and even worse controls. The whole timer makes zero sense, especially considering the monsters run away. And the combat is atrocious. I mean its a 3rd person action game ala Souls or DMC, etc. but the combat is slow and feels very bulky. The controls aren't responsive, and there are way too many useless buttons. And ultimately this suffers from what FPS suffer from, the makers dont know how to balance difficulty in coops, so either the game is too easy because its designed for multiple people and they dont scale it down, or mh case its designed for multiple people and they dont scale it down for a solo attempt.

@divinejester:

That's part of the fun; figuring out how to effectively use your weapon. The first Monster Hunter I ever played was the one on PSP and I was trash at the game. Until I trained and learned combos and dove headfirst into the mechanics. You can't compare a game like Monster Hunter to one like Dark Souls because they're not the same thing. I've beaten all 3 Dark Souls games and they both offer different types of challenges. Also, you're incorrect about scaling. At 1 player, the monsters have 100% health and deal 100% damage, but those numbers go up with more players. I agree with the other commenter; doesn't sound like this series is for you, man.

@divinejester: I've tried every 3ds monster Hunter & still can't get used to the way the game controls. They all look great, which is what makes me try it over & over again. MH3 on Wii was first one I tried, then MH3U, MH4U, MHGenerations & one more in between there somewhere. I always attempt to play solo since I want to learn the ropes before playing with others, as I wouldn't want to hold a team back. Maybe that's the problems. Since it's meant to be MP, but I am convinced that you had to have played this on PSP & before to like it, since you would have gotten used to th controls and grew with the games iterations. It's hard for me to see any newcomers becoming a fan unless they don't play any other 3rd person games, so they won't have a point of reference to compare it to (which may make it tolerable in that case, maybe). Best of luck to everyone. Glad the MH fans got a next gen game though, cuz they have been waiting forever to play in HD on a modern console with decent online features like party chat.

@divinejester: Honestly, I don't think is right for you. All the previous MH games has time limits in missions, pretty much every HRPG has it. It's more to determine how skillful are you in hunting the monsters quickly since apperently in the MH universe, it's more of a competitive career (especially since there's gonna be leaderboards at launch).

As for combat, I admit it can be too clunky for newcomers, but compared to the previous games, it's much improved. Also comparing it with DMC is not a good comparision, since the combat here is much more grounded. Are Fallout 3 and CoD4 the same 'cuz they have "gun-based" combat? Are Persona and Pokemon the same 'cuz they let you capture monsters? Of course not.

But hey, since this is your first MH and you found it too clunky for you, then that's understandable. Obviously the MH series isn't for everyone, and the Beta wasn't much of a good presentation on how the game would be. If you prefer a more fast-paced action game similar to MH, then i'd suggest to try out either Toukiden and God Eater even if they have time limits in missions (though Toukiden is much more forgiving).

@Lach0121: if the other games are anything to go by, they release different missions monthly which add new weapons, palicoes, extra items and special armour plus more. Don't think I've played another AAA series that supports their games for such a long time post release for free with the quality Dlc capcom adds.

@moviespot: Interesting! That is just more fuel for my intrigue.

This one is also drop in/out co-op right? That also is another thing that has me interested.

I do have one question though, since you seem to be experienced with this franchise... Is there any reason I will need to play any of the others before "World," or is this a good place to get started? Like Final Fantasy where each one is an isolated "event?"

@Lach0121: I had 300 hours on mh3 and over 1000 on mh4u lol all I can say about that in those games I was always learning more about the game because the depth was just so amazing. World has been advertised as a great game to start on especially since Sony hasn't seen a monster Hunter game since psp so I would imagine it will be really user friendly. Just watch what other users do and look up the apps and wiki when it releases, there's so many layers to the game where you need to use a sword to break the tail off a monster, use an axe or blunt to break it's teeth, monsters that go under ground can be brought up with a flashbomb, waving at hit air balloons shows where the monster is on the map lol, there's just so much the game doesn't tell you because it wants you to learn new. Basically just jump in and you'll learn as you go I wouldn't bother playing the others just join some decent players and learn how the game works. The community of mh is great too, as long as you're trying everyone's really friendly. Just go straight into world man you'll love the grind!

@moviespot: Oh, I wasn't clear. I was only asking in the context of a continual story arc. I wasn't sure if Monster Hunter carried one.

As far as game play discovery I love it. Currently enjoying Mario Odyssey, and will go to Zelda BotW after that. Those games are full of that stuff, so it doesn't bother me. However, I do appreciate the bit of context you have given me.

Yeah I will probably have to pick this game up. I will get it on the X1X, as I think this would be one of those games my family would enjoy together online.

@Lach0121: There wasn't much of a storyline in the previous games and they were self contained, so this is as good a spot to start as any.

@Arkhalipso: Haven't tried Diablos and I haven't been able to beat Rathalos myself cause I kept running out of time as soon as he limps away/flys around the map to try to sleep. I killed the Mudfish though, 20 minutes isn't really a good amount of time for hunting the likes of Rathalos anyway.

Edit: Beat Diablos now lol & Rathalos

Huh, a company promoting and supporting their game with free DLC, imagine that.

The industry only did this exact same thing for a good decade before COD Map Packs showed how stupid, and willing to part with their money "gamers" are.

@datriax: Capcom was the king of "on disc dlc", so they shouldn't get a pass, if you're judging by publishers/developers past actions.

@playstationzone:The directors of Monster Hunter World already confirmed that there won't be any lootboxes as they make the hard-working meaningless, they want you to earn with your efforts

@playstationzone: Capcom doesn't have a record of doing that, and even offered ways to get fighters in SF5 for free (though the base, pre-DLC game was severely lacking). The monster hunter devs have also gone on record saying they won't do microtransactions, because the "loot box" style drops are already in the game as random-percentage monster drops, but that they won't ever charge for such things because it defeats the purpose of playing the game.

Is it normal to see a captcha while logged in and posting? I've never seen that before...

Maybe because I usually browse on my phone?

I'm loving the beta! Go Capcom!
