Monster-Hunting Game Evolve Beats Batman, Lord of the Rings to Win E3 Critics Game of Show

The next project from Left 4 Dead creator dominates with four total awards; indie game No Man's Sky right behind it with three.

The votes are in for the 2014 E3 Game Critics Awards, and 2K Games' monster-hunting shooter Evolve has taken home the top prize. Based on voting from more than two dozen publications--including GameSpot, IGN, Kotaku, and USA Today--Evolve won Best of Show. An impressive feat for a brand new IP.

It beat upcoming games in established franchises like Alien: Isolation, Batman: Arkham Knight, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege, as well as newcomer No Man's Sky, to claim the title. Evolve is in development at Turtle Rock Studios, the team that created the critically acclaimed Left 4 Dead series. In the game, four players fight together to take down a fifth player who plays the role of a supersized monster.

Not only did Evolve with Best of Show, but the game also nabbed three other award: Best Action Game, Best Console Game, and Best Online Multiplayer. The only other game to take home multiple awards was ambitious indie space game No Man's Sky, which was voted Best Original Game and Best Independent Game, and was also awarded a Special Commendation for Innovation. The Super Smash Bros. series won two awards (3DS version for Best Handheld Game and Wii U version for Best Fighting Game), though each title only nabbed one award individually.

Evolve was GameSpot's latest "Next Big Game." Be sure to check out this special page for exclusive coverage of the game. The full list of E3 Game Critics Awards winner is below. Winners are in bold.

It's a shame really that every year the multiplayer focused games gather all the attention. I'm sure that Evolve will be a great experience and an enjoyable game but there are other games here that deserve it too. Why is The Witcher 3 not on the list? It was shown in similar fashion to many other titles that are on there.

I like that Shadow of Mordor is nominated in several categories (Best of Show, RPG, Console Game), that bodes well. Despite being a huge Lotr fan I haven't played any Lotr game. As far as I can recall, there haven't been any Lotr singleplayer RPG's or at least not any good ones for PC. I have (but haven't played) War in the North, which seems like a decent hack-and-slash game and with this upcoming game there will at least be two Lotr games worth playing.

Two things:

1 - I would take DA over BB any day, as DA will actually have an emotional story that impacts you, where the "souls" games are nothing more than "eh" mechanics and insane "difficulty". I never got why they got so popular

2 - is it wrong that I think evolve looks dull? I watched gameplay and you just end up pumping 9 billion rounds into the beast with no effect. It looks boring.

Is it sad that most of these games are shooters?, its not but it is. Come on dev's make way more non-fps games, that are great.

Evolve? Unless it also includes a single player mode, I'm not even considering it.

It will but it'll most likely just be the same as online with bots. I don't expect a ton of variety.

The time when you know you shouldn't take a ranking board seriously when they vote Dragon Age: inquisition over Bloodborne (from the creator of demon's souls)

Wow, where in the heck is The Witcher 3? They don't even have it as a nomination for Game of Show, Best PC game or even best RPG of show? Wow. Its one thing not to have it win, but not even a nomination?

All this shows is that people still have the Call of Duty taste in their mouth. They got tired of playing the same game reskinned every year, and figured they'd rather play a slightly competitive shooter more than anything else just so they're not involved in the long standing stigma of being a Call of Duty subscriber.

I wish they would have a singleplayer mode against bots. You won't always get a team that actually plays like a team and I'm worried it will ruin most of the matches. Then you also have people who don't use a microphone which could limit communication.

I'm not a online-only kind of guy, but Evolve does look interesting.

At the same time, it looks very limited so far.
