Moonbreaker, A New Game Created By Subnautica Team And Brandon Sanderson, Announced At Gamescom
Moonbreaker is a turn-based miniatures game inspired by Firefly and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Unknown Worlds--the studio behind the open-world survival game Subnautica--is teaming up with Mistborn author Brandon Sanderson to create a brand-new IP: Moonbreaker. The turn-based sci-fi game is inspired by tabletop RPGs and features minifigures players can paint before sending off into battle. Moonbreaker is currently development for PC, with a Steam early access release scheduled for September 29, 2022.
In Moonbreaker, players will assemble a team featuring one captain and 10 additional units. They must then attempt to defeat the other team's captain and lead their troops to victory by strategically utilizing their ship assists, roster makeup, map knowledge, and more. Players can compete against other players online, or partake in offline challenges. In addition to these skirmishes, the game also features a Cargo Run mode. This mode offers a single-player experience filled with procedurally generated AI encounters, adding an almost rogue-lite element to the game.
Those familiar with Dungeon and Dragons will recognize many of the spells and moves shown off in the Moonbreaker trailer. In addition, those who enjoy tabletop RPGs that use minifigures will feel right at home in the game's custom paint studio. According to the Steam page, "every aspect of Moonbreaker is designed to capture the feel of a physical miniatures game without the real-world downsides." The game heavily encourages players personalizing their roster and figures, allowing them to make use of "custom palettes, beautiful finishes, and professional digital painting tools" to better express their tastes.
According to Unknown Worlds, Moonbreaker is inspired by games like Hearthstone and XCOM, as well as popular sci-fi properties such as Firefly and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The game is currently available to wishlist over on Steam.
