BreakAway Games, a relatively new game development house formed in part by Doug Whatley, who served a product developer at OT Sports, announced Thursday that game designer Joe Balkoski has joined the company.

Balkoski is a long-time computer game industry veteran, responsible for the creation and development of dozens of games, including Atlantic Wall, Wacht am Rhein, the Fleet series, the Great Campaigns of the Civil War series, Frederick the Great, Lee vs. Grant, Statis-Pro Football, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, and Semper Fi. Balkoski is also the author of Beyond the Beachhead: The 29th Infantry Division in Normandy, a former editor of Strategy & Tactics magazine, a historian for the Maryland National Guard, and a contributor to Simon and Schuster's D-Day Encyclopedia.

“I am thrilled to announce the addition of Joe Balkoski to BreakAway Games,” said Doug Whatley, president of BreakAway Games. “I am a long-time fan of Joe's games and I feel that his expertise will enable us to make the best war games in the business. As anyone who has ever played one of Joe's games knows his attention to detail and historical insight are second to none.”

It is not currently known exactly what games BreakAway and Balkoski will be creating, but it was noted that Balkoski will concentrate on “historical simulations” and BreakAway plans on developing high-end games for both PC and console systems.
