More Final Fantasy XV Collector's Editions Could Be Produced

Along with a release date, Square Enix last week announced two special editions of Final Fantasy XV. One of these, the Ultimate Collector's Edition, quickly sold out, much to the chagrin of those who couldn't secure a preorder in time. The company is aware there's demand for more and is now investigating the possibility of producing additional units.

Game director Hajime Tabata sent out a series of messages through the Japanese Final Fantasy Twitter account today. As translated by Siliconera, he apologized for the situation with the Collector's Edition and said Square Enix is hoping to rectify it.

"[T]he preorders for the Ultimate Collector's Edition vanished in a flash, and we've received plenty of voices from those that weren't able to acquire it," Tabata said. "We are terribly sorry about that. At the moment, we're continuing with internal coordination to see if we can somehow increase its production. We will make an announcement as soon as there's any progress!”

Only 30,000 copies of the Collector's Edition were to be made available originally. Sold exclusively through Square Enix's online store for $270, it consists of the game, a special steelbook case, an artbook, a Play Art Kai statue of Noctis, a soundtrack, and more. (The other special edition, the $90 Deluxe Edition, is still available.)

Naturally, as soon as it sold out--you can only join a waiting list for both the Xbox One and PS4 versions currently--some of these were listed on eBay at extreme markups. Dozens have been sold for $500-$600, with some even going for $700.

It's unclear if Square Enix plans to do anything about these resellers, but Tabata did acknowledge that the company is aware of what's happening.

"Again, I'd like to let you know that we will follow protocol to handle what appears to be unusual orders that may seem like they were made for resale purposes," he said.
