More Original Xbox Backwards Compatibility Games Are Coming, But It's "More Complicated"

The rights issues for OG Xbox games are "complicated" compared to Xbox 360, Phil Spencer says.

There are currently 13 Original Xbox games in the Xbox One's backwards compatibility lineup, including great games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Psychonauts. More are coming, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed, though he did not give anything away about what these titles might be.

"There are a number of [Original Xbox] games in [backwards compatibility] pipeline," Spencer said on Twitter. However, he cautioned that getting OG Xbox games into the catalog is "more complicated" than it is for Xbox 360 titles. Getting permission from the rights-holders for titles is more involved than it is for Xbox 360 titles, he said, which will mean that there won't be as many OG Xbox games in the library as there are Xbox 360.

Now Playing: GS News Update: More Original Xbox Backwards Compatibility Games Are Coming, But It's "More Complicated"

Microsoft has always said the lineup of OG Xbox games in the backwards compatibility won't be as extensive as the Xbox 360 catalog, nor will the releases come as frequently. For comparison, we rarely go for more than a few weeks without new Xbox 360 games being made backwards compatible.

For more, you can see the full lineup of backwards-compatible OG Xbox games below. Meanwhile, here is the full OG + Xbox 360 backwards compatibility catalog.

My guess why their a bit slow is they are improving the graphics. They probably are doing that to KOTOR 2 right now, just as they did for the original KOTOR.

I'm still hoping I can get my SmileBit games (Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gunvalkyre, Jet Set Radio Future), at some point.

I love how people are saying Microsoft is just 'making excuses' when in reality they don't know at all what they are talking about.

If Microsoft really could just drop an update/app that allowed you to play any and all 360/Original Xbox games instantly don't you think they would have instead of wasting time and resources to individually license and optimize each game to be able to run on the console? It's not a simple copy/paste, type in some secret unlock code, and boom it works.

To put things in perspective one of the reasons it's not the same as a normal emulator is that they have to allow the game to be downloaded from their server. Why? Because the game on your disk is not the same as what's used in BC. Your disk is just used to verify ownership. Not only that, but since these games are modified in some way to be bootstrapped and played on Xbox One they have to get approval from the publishers. Add on the fact that some of these games have songs that are no longer licensed, some publishers want to release the game themselves as a remaster or remake, and some companies have outright closed and you can see why it gets complicated.

As to why some of you think they are being 'vague', it's because it's not simply the same issue for each game. They also do not want to reveal the name of any publisher that refuses because they want to keep a good relationship and professional standard. If they said "We can't release Blinx because 'x' studio wants to make money on a remaster" people would lynch that studio and Microsoft would be the bad guy for outing them like that.

Please use some thought, the world makes more sense when you do.

@genji_shimada: Some minor corrections for you. For one, the game files are exactly the same from disc to what you download EXCEPT the BC download have the emulator included - the game files themselves are unchanged. This is not why they need permission or to check licenses, that is done because these games were never licensed to be distributed on the One - only the system they were originally made for.

They (possibly) could have made a stand-alone emulator that allowed to play games for disc, but there are inherent problems with that. For one, this generation of consoles were not designed to run ANY games from disc. We do not know how far into the metal this requirement goes, so it might not even be possible to run games from disc. With a stand-alone emulator if you add a game to its library, the whole emulator needs updating and may become unstable as more compatibility files are added (not all games run the same or use the same programming techniques). The way it is now they can tweak each individual emulation wrapper and not have to worry if a change is going to affect another title in the library, which becomes a mess to track down once a large amount of games are using it.

Other than that, good post.

I like that they are paying attention to the older games. Fusion Frenzy is a really fun party game. I got rid of my OG Xbox and all the games because I just kind of accepted that the games I spent money on would no longer work on the newer systems. I wish they did this sooner and I would have kept some of my older games. I like that they are now preserving the value of these games. When the next Xbox comes out, I like knowing all my current games aren't going to go in the trash and i won't have to keep an old console to play them.

Just looking at The Shadow of Colossus, I can't imagine playing a game with PS2/Xbox graphics today unless it's just for nostalgia. I'd much rather a proper remake of good games. People buy them so maybe MS should consider it. I do still play N64 with my nephews sometimes, just for nostalgia though. Seems like a lot of work for a few good games, that look like turd. Lot of 360 BC titles but not many good ones. Odin's Sphere: L was a good example... $60 on release for a PS2 game. I spent $24 I think, but it was well worth it... Game is beautiful and a new experience for me.

@joshrmeyer: The original Xbox was a BEAST compared to the PS2. Halo 1, Jet Set Radio Future, Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions, and Burnout Revenge, among others, all hold up graphically, especially through component cables.

@Terminator95:

Funny...considering Sony put out thier 2nd remaster of shadow of colossus in 7 years, today.

Looks like Sony is an even worst crapbox, considering Sony asked you to pay both times. This is completely free on XBO if you still own the game

@darkouer: Licensing. Since the games are older, there's a better chance of licenses expiring. Example, the Steam re-release of Obscure had Still Waiting by Sum 41 removed from the game. In addition, it's also possible the rights to the game might have changed hands since the original Xbox days. Example, Duke Nukem went from 3D Realms to Gear Box because of a licensing dispute.

Pretty good start, but here is my wish list:

Links 2004 (not likely however), Morrowind, The Thing, Scarface, Jade Empire, KOTOR 2, Splinter Cell series, Ghost Recon series, Call of Cthulhu, Destroy All Humans (1 & 2), Simpsons: Hit & Run, Indigo Prophecy, Manhunt, Max Payne (1 & 2), Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Pirates of the Caribbean (Bethesda), Shenmue II and a few others.

I grew up during the infancy of the Video Gaming era. My hope is that one day I can have a service that can work similar to the way (but not exactly like) Netflix or Hulu etc works. Why is it to hard for consumers and businesses of the industry to realize that at the moment? Money? Do we really need to go through all of our ages silver, golden and such just to end up where an acceptable form of entertainment is today like movies. I love that you can go on most streaming services and watch the old movies along with the new. One day you may be able to play the original Zelda along side Idk Halo. But I don’t want a walled garden like Steam, Xbox live, or PSN is at the moment. When they spread their selves a little thinner like Netflix and offer their services across all of our loved electronic devices only then will we feel that we’ve made it to a New Age of Games.

I don't know why they bother to be honest, I just don't see the attraction or the appeal. If you want to play old games - keep your old games systems. I just don't understand Microsoft with this spending time and effort to focus on this. But then again latest rumour is they are buying EA, so I don't understand Microsoft full stop.

@Fallenlords69: The problem with your advice is it doesn't take into consideration that these devices can break over time. Example, I have a Gamecube in my closet with a disc drive that no longer works. The fact that old systems can stop working over time is one of the reasons there's a market for console clones. They replace the broken ones.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, PS1, PS2, PS3, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Xbox, and Xbox 360 console clones. This makes playing those games trickier. If your old device is broken and there's no console clones, you don't have a lot of good options. Buying a preowned system means you could end up getting one with a problem of some kind like the disc drive not working, the system being imported, the Xbox still having one of those recalled power cables, parts missing like the lack of a Wii U gamepad, or even getting locked out of games based on the previous owner's parental controls.

With backwards compatibility, those things are avoided. Unfortunately, it seems like Microsoft wants to make sure they can sell games digitally before they allow them to be played on the XBO.

@Jinzo_111887: I have been a gamer since ZX Spectrum days. But apart from a smidgen of nostalgia I couldn't see myself going back to play Manic Miner/Jetpac over something more current.

Fair enough things can break/lost whatever. Personally I horde, still have my ZX Spectrum 48k don't know if it still works. I tend to keep everything. But I also tend to move forward with each generation of console. Once the PS4 was out, PS3 was fundamentally dead. Same with the 360. There are perhaps odd games I haven't finished or might if the mood takes me go back to playing. But overall the games I would go back to playing have tended to be remastered and re-released for the next generation of console.

With gaming I am always looking forward, what has gone before is a benchmark by what I gauge current games. But we move forward to new experiences good/bad. I spent many wonderful hours playing Manic Miner/Jetpac, but that was the past. Fair enough if you haven't played them, then they are worth playing to see how modern games have evolved. But I have no nostalgia for older games at all.

@Fallenlords69: I played Jetpack on Donkey Kong 64. It's not my kind of game. It's actually before my time. Anyway, even if you're not a part of it, there is a market for older games (older meaning they were on a previous system, not exactly from the '80s or '90s.) Over the years, there have been a number of re-releases in some form. Too many for me to actually count, but I'll give a few examples:

Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Prime Trilogy, HD collections, Sonic Mega/Gems/(Ultimate) Genesis Collection, Classic NES series for GBA, Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green/Heart Gold/Soul Silver/Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby, Super Mario Advance series, Super Mario 64 DS, Kirby's Super Star Ultra, Super Mario All-Stars, Disney Afternoon Collection, Ducktales Remastered, Resident Evil Remake and 0 Remasters, Star Fox 64 3D, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3D, NES and SNES mini classic edition systems, Virtual Console titles, and DOSbox/SCUMMVM games sold through GOG and Steam to name a few.

The full list can get a lot bigger, especially if you include newer games released by indie developers and big publishers that try to tap into older stuff like Road Redemption, Yooka-Laylee, Freedom Planet, Sonic Mania, Shovel Knight, Spark the Electric Jester, and Mekazoo. If there was no market for this stuff, this kind of thing would be pretty rare to see these days. Seeing all these ports, remakes, and remasters, and re-releases. By not having this kind of feature, there's a market they're missing out on.

@Fallenlords69: Mostly it's a lot easier to pop your game in something you already have hooked up to your TV rather than drag the OG Xbox out and hook it up. Also it's a matter of hook ups as a lot of modern TVs don't have composite hookups anymore and component is also hard to come by on new TVs. Also there is a little bit of up-scaling that the Xbox 1 does so the games look a bit nicer as well.

@dragonsama: Yeah I can understand that point. But why are people playing old games? I mean most of the games on backwards compatibility I have already played when they released. Who in this day and age would sooner say play Black/Blood Rayne2 compared to say Monster Hunter World.

@Fallenlords69: Because those games are fun and you enjoy them. I've regularly gone back and beaten older games. Heck I just ran though the Mega Man games last year because they are still great. Before that I played though the Metal Gear games. But I also don't only play old stuff I just beat Hell Blade, Persona 5, Neir Automata, and Battlefield 1

By this logic why would anyone go back and re-watch a movie or TV show, listen to a song they have already heard, go to a place they have already been.

People like to revisit and play the things that they love and they should be able to do so if they choose. Having the option there in a nice new console that can upscale the game and make it playable on their current hardware/TV is a good thing.

@dragonsama: Yeah just don't get why anybody would sooner re-live a previous experience than try something new. I mean fair enough we can all have favourite games, books, films, TV series that will always appeal. Things like that you can continue to enjoy over and over.

But I kind of get the vibe from backwards compatibility that people just like the feature because it expands their game library. If they feel a whim to go back and play something it is there. Fair enough. Gold gives away titles that you might still want to play, might never have played etc. But overall I am never short of anything to play. For me to replay any game would take a serious time commitment. I struggle to find time to play current games.

Again the data doesn't really back up the argument. Two thirds of gamers never finish a game. Data shows most people don't play backwards compatibility titles, on average only 1.5% of gamers time is spent playing them according to Ars Technica/Kotaku, though Microsoft disputes this overall but doesn't supply revised numbers. Playstation are not following this lead and I wonder why if it so popular? They offer a streaming service, which to me makes sense if you are that keen to play old games. So overall I personally have the feeling here we are pandering to the lowest common denominator or people that think it is a good idea, but don't probably use it that much.

@Fallenlords69: Not everyone needs to play the shiniest new bauble out there. There are also some rare gems from that era that blow away new games in terms of story and/or gameplay - graphics aren't everything. Furthermore not everyone's original Xbox is still working and they may not feel the need to replace it just to play a handful of games. Finally, not everyone plays every game when it comes out or finishes those games. I personally have a pretty big backlog that reaches back to the Genesis era and I still have quite a few Xbox games I need to play or finish up to this date which are currently just sitting on the shelf right now.

And I would probably get more enjoyment from those Xbox games you mentioned than Monster Hunter World...and I don't have to buy those as they are already in my library.

@dlCHIEF58: The majority of people don't finish games. On average only about a third of gamers will ever finish a game, which blows my mind. And being an achievement hunter, I tend to try and finish a game and if I can go back to it to clock up some more achievements a little later on.

So to my mind most people don't complete a game in the first place. Yet they want to replay all these old games which just seems odd to me. Fair enough if they didn't finish them in the first place or didn't play them, and are going back to complete. But statistically I doubt they are going back for completion purposes. To me it is like a Rose Tinted Glasses epidemic is happening in the gaming world ... because it is older it is somehow better than the current games on offer.

Monster Hunter World is an excellent game that deserves, IMHO, a punt. It lacks a little in story, but overall what it lacks in this area it makes up in other areas. And surely as gamers we should be supporting the developers that are doing things right, which in this instance Capcom appear to be doing. Now so much dwelling on the past... my thoughts anyway.

@Fallenlords69: As an achievement hunter myself (though far from a completionist by any means), I can understand your position to a point. For me it is hard to go back to an older game that does not have achievements, but I do have some gems in my library I picked up later on a sale that deserve a playthrough (many of which I listed above in another post). The features on the One make it more likely I'll do so on that console (Twitch/Mixer streaming, contact with Live ecosystem). But achievement hunters and completionists are a pretty small minority in the grand scheme of things, outliers of the gaming community.

By the same token, I am more likely to go back and clean up any 360 games for further achievements on my One - my 360 is rarely started up except for playing games that are not or never will be BC on the One (music games, Kinect, etc.). So I am more likely to play an old 360 game than an old OG Xbox one for those reasons (along with Live still being active for the majority of 360 online games). But there are still some OG Xbox games I would revisit or play for the first time (bought on sale late and never played). Playing the BC titles on my One saves wear and tear on my 360s and its controllers so they will last longer because of the feature. This would also apply to my original Xboxes.

There are many reasons why someone didn't finish a game: got bored, something new came out, got stuck in a spot and never went back, or perhaps lost (or had to return) a game before finishing.

@Fallenlords69: Not every gamer is your age or has ever bought or wants to buy an OG Xbox to play these older titles. I catch myself playing a lot of last gen games on my PC (Enslaved: Odyssey to the West being the latest). Just because games are older doesn't mean people don't want to play them. I'm personally happy Microsoft is doing this and wish Sony would do the same.

@xcael: I still don't really understand (apart from the couple of comments above about connecting up/missed games) this peculiar fascination with old games. I mean it isn't just Xbox Backwards Compatibility - we have retro consoles coming out left right and centre. Somebody else mentioned to me that there was a golden age of gaming, where games were released working/complete not like they are today. And I get that angle as well.

But I still don't understand why somebody today would pick to play an older game over something new. Even something new that isn't that great would normally visually knock the socks off an older game. And playing something you played years ago, what is the fascination? You want to re-live your youth/childhood and regress or something.

I would much sooner Microsoft focus on the future and stop wasting time on this overall. Not sure they would be wasting time on this if they had any first party games to deliver. To me seems a way to expand the library of games on the cheap. Fair enough if you never played these games, buy a game pass or whatever it works out as decent value. But for people that played these at launch, people that buy games at launch, I don't see there being much value in Backwards Compatibility at all. To me it seems they are pandering to the casual gamer.

@Fallenlords69: Well, it increases the system's total library size. In addition, some people may prefer older games compared to newer ones for some reason. Example, some people may prefer the older SWBF2 compared to the newer one because of EA's blunder. Granted, the only way to play the older one online right now is on PC as far as I know, but this just gives you an example.

@Jinzo_111887: Some games have epic longevity, but they tend to be mostly PC games. They have an active community that just keeps on going, even if authorised servers etc are taken down. Now that sort of thing I can understand, having a continued passion for a game you have invested time and energy in overall.

And games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 with mods can be turned into different games allowing a lot of replay value. A remaster of a game, improving it in some way, I can also get on board with. Because the game has been tweaked/modified for the current environment.

But overall I would sooner just play something new/different than go back to a game I played years ago. And there are loads of new games to play.

I appreciate there is a market for all this retro gaming, but it just mystifies me. I just think, played that at launch it was dire then and no better now. Why on earth would anybody want to play that? Some games stand the test of time, but they are few and far between. And fair enough playing a game you have never played. But replaying old games, don't get it at all.

@xcael: He stated his opinion, he does not see the point. You stated yours. No problem there man. You don't need to insult him.

I personally think its a cool option, but I would rather have them focus on new IP and more exclusive games.

Different strokes for different folks.

@129260: i didnt comment on his opinion i commented on the stupid comment of just keep your old system.

its like the people that respond "hook your pc up to your tv then you can sit on couch" comments when people respond how they like to play on consoles to sit on couch.

I would hate to see the state of their homes.

I do not have to wait being I still have the games and the OG on hand to play when I want to. The only thing that might be hard to do is MP being MP is not supported no more for these games.

@lonewolf1044: Yet there still is a workaround for that if the game supports System Link.

Metal Arms Glitch in the System please. It's already an Xbox original on 360, and I'd love to see it up-rezzed.

I would actually like to play the old NFL Fever from the OG Xbox. That game looked and played so much better than Madden, and not a complicated.

I'm still waiting for any Splinter Cells or that XBL Arcade Ninja game (forget the name) from the 360.

Buffy the vampire slayer! I will say it forever till I get it! It was the reason I bought an OG Xbox all those years ago.

They shouldn't have gone so far back with so much of just last generation still not brought up to the current one. I am still hoping for mgs collection, nier, zone of the enders collection, (these ones i know are ported to the current generation but there are multiple games that are available on the current xbox1 and still got backwards compatibility.) The RE games like 4,5,6 and code veronica. The dead rising games, L.A. noire
