More PS2 Middleware Technology
A new development tool to assist developers in speeding up production times for PC and PlayStation2 games will make designing games easier.
A new development tool from Side Effects Software will make designing games on next-generation consoles and PCs a lot easier. Called Proceed3D, the technology consists of a 2D/3D authoring package, a particle runtime engine, and a motion runtime engine, It is intended to allow designers to achieve a high quality of visuals at a fraction of the previously required manpower as well.
"Proceed3D's integrated approach, which bridges content authoring and programming, enables artists to visually create effects and motion without programmer assistance," said Side Effects Software CTO, Paul Salvini. "Neither an authoring solution nor a middleware solution on its own would provide what next-generation console developers require. Proceed3D offers them a streamlined pipeline that will result in film-like quality, faster time to market, less memory use, lower development costs, and portability across multiple platforms."
Side Effects said that it would make the Proceed3D development tool available to PC designers, as well as to PlayStation2 developers as part of Sony's middleware program. Additionally, Side Effects stated that it would announce support for "other consoles later next year," leading us to believe that the company is readying tools for the Nintendo Dolphin as well.
Information on Proceed3D's availability will be revealed this January. In the meantime, Side Effects is offering the technology on a project-by-project royalty basis.
