Mortal Kombat 11 Getting Free PS5, Xbox Series X Upgrades With Cross-Play

You can play with enhanced visuals, reduced load times, and 4K resolution the week after the new consoles launch.

NetherRealm recently teased that Mortal Kombat 11 will kontinue, and today the studio has announced how with a one-two punch. The game is getting another Kombat Pack with a slate of new fighters, but you'll also be able to upgrade to enhanced next-gen versions for free.

The end of the new Kombat Pack 2 trailer gives word that next-gen upgrades will be available starting November 17, the week after Xbox Series X, Series S, and PlayStation 5 launch. Among the upgrades, it promises visual enhancements, 4K resolution, and reduced load times. It will have cross-play with cross-gen compatibility for select modes, though the announcement doesn't mention which ones. This will work across generations, though not with PC or Nintendo Switch. On Xbox, it will use the Smart Delivery feature for next-gen upgrades. However, it's still being called a "backward compatible" version of the game, so we wouldn't expect an enormous difference. This could also possibly keep the file size a little lower, however. Next-gen games are likely to be larger than our current games, and the storage capacity on the new systems isn't particularly huge.

Now Playing: Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate - Rambo, Mileena, And Rain Official Kombat Pack 2Reveal Trailer

The main meat (ew) of the announcement was the three new fighters: Mileena, Rain, and Rambo--complete with Sly Stallone's actual voice. Preorders will also get new skins for Noob Saibot, Liu Kang, and Skarlet. They're very intense, with lots of black and red color.

An Ultimate version coming October 15 will package all of the existing DLC, along with the Kombat Pack 2, for $60. If you already have all that (or you're just a big Rambo fan) you can get the Kombat Pack 2 itself for $15. NetherRealm notes that the PS5 and PS4 versions of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will be available digitally starting November 17, and that physical versions won't be out until January.

Do you need to upgrade to Aftermath to play online and/ or to continue to use new Kombat Packs?

No PC cross play support.....not surprising, NRS always treats the PC platform like a second class citizen.

@SoopaMan2K: QLED. No- LCDs and LEDs aren't self emissive or organic, so there's no degradation.

I have an OLED, the picture is better than QLED for my dark room. I run a pixel refresher once a month. No problems so far.

My LG supports VRR in 4k at 120HZ, so it's perfect for me because i have a 3080 on my PC. But I play for maybe 1 or 2 hours at night.

But if you're going to play for extensive periods of time, QLED is a better option. The black levels and contrast aren't as good, but you don't have to worry about burn in.

Also, they're brighter, so if you have a bright room, QLED is better than OLED.

@SoopaMan2K:

It doesn’t matter what TV/brand/AV equipment you have…it could last as little as a year and have a wide range of problems if you treat it like shit.

Read the little thing called the manual and learn what you can to help mitigate issues from arising , particularly before making any pricey investment…have to be more mindful of little things you normally wouldn’t be, even power surges you don’t notice can cause electronics to fail prematurely over time. I just make it a point to only have something turned on if I’m actively using it…otherwise it goes off.

@SoopaMan2K: no, no problems. Go get your QLED, is gaming safe. I actually have an OLED and i game with this TV no issues so far. I am very careful and i never game for hours or even come close to put my OLED TV in any danger. Still it is obvious the that OLED TV 's are a series problem with the burn in issue and not everyone is as careful as i am when i game with my OLED. It s safe to stay away from OLED and get the sure thing QLED TV instead. I have a separate IPS monitor which i use when i game for long periods of time, just to stay away from putting my OLED in any danger.

if you have a ps4 pro and a xbox one X the game is already in 4k and set to the highest possible setting you can get. putting it on next gen hardware will not make it look any better than it does right now. You might get better frame rates for a smoother playing experince but as far graphics go it will still look the same as it does now.

@notafan: lol might get better frames? it currently runs closer to 30 fps than 60 fps in dynamic 4k on current gen consoles. This is going to look significantly better.

Plus they may add a whole heap of extra detail in and better textures.

Ehh this game was filled with anti-consumer crap, to the point that I just lost interest in the series. MK9 is still the best imo.

@mcnichoj: I've heard NetherRealm fixed the in-game grind (somewhat) but the way WB handles censorship, DLC and pricing just rubs me the wrong way. Similar stuff happened with MK10 and Shadow of War as well and their behavior only seems to get worse.

These practices eventually made me lose interest in anything that WB releases and I just don't feel like supporting their games at the moment.

And this is how you make people play your old game, especially the crossplay part. Sony is so dumb with their paid upgrades. They look like EA/Activision right now.

@hardwenzen: I keep seeing that next-gen upgrades are free on PS5, (I think Remedy is being shady about it with Control, and maybe Spiderman has a charge as well).

Is there a bunch of them now that we have to pay for next-gen upgrades on? That would suck 🤨

@thecupidstunts: Sony is having major issues when it comes to backwards compatibility. They didn't factor it in from the start like Xbox did. You can't take most of your saves games from PS4 to PS5 for instance like you can on Xbox ecosystem. It's great for instance you can play a game on a PC laptop and carry that save to the Xbox when you get home or even stream the games if you have Android.

Not even factoring in Gamepass which offers the best value by far for any new console purchase.

Sony really needs to up their game when it comes to consumer friendly behaviour. They rest on their laurels way too much because the PS4 was popular . There is zero guarantee the PS5 will be as popular as PS4 especially when you factor in games from Bethesda now not coming to the platform or current ones being upgraded like they are on Xbox for series S and X.

It was a shock to everyone that the new Xbox sold out in Japan just after pre-orders went up for offer. I get it though . The PS5 is a huge console which is not something Japanese gamers love.

I still think the first party will be strong on PS5 but it is a lot of money to pay to play just a few exclusives a year when it will have the worst versions of the mutliplats by far.

Those limited Cu's are already affecting Ray tracing performance and amount they can do. Quarter resolution and limited Ray tracing is not looking the best in their premier Spiderman game. They may as well have left it out and concentrated on upping the detail instead.

@deviltaz35: Sega and Nintendo had adapters to play older video games...

The not so successful NEC PC Engine SuperGrafx could play older PC engine games.

Sony is a not a very good video game company but Japanese Fanatics don’t have many options for this generation either the inferior Wii U or PS4, even the new Switch is step Behind the PS4 Pro....

@Viper13579: it’s $69.99 full fledge PS5 price? Could have been $39.99, $49.99 even $59.99....

Sony saved a load of money on production. Same video game new coat of paint.

@Viper13579: Keep telling yourself that. It's the exact same game with an enhanced patch.

Sony has been outed on this face it. There is no going back from here , they lied to rip people off.

PC remasters are often free too providing you have the original . Just check Steam.

@deviltaz35: yes but PC and consoles are completely different. You can upgrade a PC without having to buy a new one. No console remaster is ever free. I’m sure that Xbox will have Gears 5 remaster that’ll have a little more stuff to it but it’ll basically be the same game just better looking. But look at all of the Resident Evils, remasters that you had to pay for. Same with FFVII. And Spider-Man is the main game with all of the DLCs. You can’t get all that on PS4 for free. You could a few months ago but not now.

What you are looking at is that all of them are greedy. Even Microsoft. The only reason MS sounds better is bc they have no choice. They’ve been utterly destroyed in every console cycle. (Not talking about PS3 vs XBOX 360.The Wii destroyed them both) I’m not a Sony fanboy at all. They have done things that have ultimately pissed me off, but they are #1 for a reason. All of the points you make are still not gonna flip PS buyers to a series X. I’m gonna buy both just like this past console generation. But also as a sports fan, Sony is marketing the PS5 a lot during the NBA finals, MLB playoffs, and NFL games. I haven’t seen one Series X commercial. But you have to admit, Sony does have a better launch lineup

Spiderman is the first, but as far as i am aware, its also the first Sony exclusive that is even getting an upgrade. If this does well, and i bet you it will, Bloodborne and God of War are next.

@hardwenzen: It is barely 2 years since it was released on PS4. When you take into account the noticeable differences graphically can only be played at 30 fps as well it's a joke. the 60 fps mode is welcome and should have been a patch for existing users like all of Xbox first party are. They are adding raytracing to Gears V as well for free plus 120 fps MP . This just shows how anti-consumer Sony really is and how ignorant Sony fanboys choose to remain.

After the Bethesda buy out there is just no point in buying a PS5 at launch. I'll hold off until Naughty Dog release something new or possibly when GT comes out though i wasn't impressed it is using the current engine instead of something all new. The shadow distance is very poor and will look even worse in 4k at a high framerate on PS5.

I am really hoping the limitations of PS5 graphics are not the reason for short draw distances due to it's lack of Cu's.

You may say that this is guesswork, but if they weren't planning on charging money for upgrades, they would've never planned on doing so in a game that is only 2 years old. I mean, they call it a remaster, but how exactly is remastering a 2 years old game is even a thing LOL. The main reason i believe they will charge for upgrades is their overconfidence. They were so dominant this whole generation, that they think they can get with this bs. Remember the launch of ps3 and how arrogant they were? It won't be as bad, but don't be surprised if some of it will be present in the coming generation UNLESS MS becomes a major competition yet again.

Are we sure of that? Cuz I don't see it on their press release....Safe File Transfer is a MUST to have after expending several months in collecting stuff on this game there wouldn't be any good to have a "Free Upgrade" without the most important thing...SAVE PROGRESS!

Ah... the age-old problem of being nickle and dimed for a fighting game. Didn't I pay full price twice for this game already, with the aftermath content?!

Mileena's costume looks strange. It lacks novelty and imagination. I mean, hire a fashion designer if you have to or just put in MK2-3 costumes in for nostalgia sake (as simple as those were).
