[Update: Mortal Kombat 11 will be adding Rambo to the game as part of Kombat Pack 2. It will also be getting free next-gen upgrades that will support cross-play, including across generations.]

Mortal Kombat 11 producer Ed Boon has announced a new sales milestone for the fighting game, and teased an impending announcement. The NetherRealm studio founder announced on Twitter that MK11 had sold 8 million units since its launch in April 2019.

The potential bigger news of his tweet, though, was that a new announcement is coming this week. Boon said that "what's next for MK11" will be shown, suggesting this will be news surrounding the current game, not a new game or the long-rumored Injustice 3. He did not announce a Kombat Kast, but a subsequent tweet shared on Tuesday by the official Mortal Kombat sets a date and time: October 8 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. A brief video, which you can see below, shows Baraka running through a jungle. The accompanying text says, "They are koming," which sounds like a tease for new characters (and the jungle setting may point to Rambo, who was previously leaked as a new MK11 character). It's unclear if this will be a livestream, trailer release, or something else.

With next-gen consoles (ahem, konsoles) coming soon, this could be an announcement of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions or upgrades. Or it could be a whole new round of DLC altogether, as leaks have suggested more characters on the way. So far NetherRealm has added a slew of additional characters to the mix, along with the story-focused epilogue Aftermath. That update added some new features like Friendships and new finishers for free as well.

"Mortal Kombat 11 remains one of the best fighting games of this console generation, and the recent free update makes it better," Edmond Tran wrote in GameSpot's review. "Aftermath introduces a couple of great characters, and the expanded story definitely has its highs, but it's not essential to your enjoyment of an already superb game."

They really impress me with the amount of time they keep spending on the game. All the new visuals that they keep on tweaking and improving are welcome. They might’ve overcharged for the Aftermath portion, but as long as they keep releasing new content this year, I’m fine with it.

I have to admit, that I stopped buying fighting games because of the minced sales of items. I don't play fighting games that often to warrant all those purchases, but it is nice to have a full edition. Last one I bought was MK10 Komplete edition & I barely play it.

I wonder how such games can survive into the future, maybe ask loyal fans to pay $10 yearly for some bonus materials? Game already looks super good, can't imagine how much better they will look next gen.

I hope they re-release MK1-UMK3. UMK3 was the best.

@just1mohr: That's exactly how they survive. They release the game and then support it with more fighters. The entire fighting game genre exists by keeping a competitive community going. The only real exception is Smash, which is basically its own genre at this point - but even then, they have a big competitive community.

Most fighting games are 1v1 affairs that have a more niche appeal - the initial sales will be from many casual players yes, but the longevity comes from players who are willing to master the characters for years to come. NetherRealm does have the added bonus of having an actual story mode though, which you can't say for many fighting games. Stories are huge and is the reason why casuals like myself would even buy the games.

What is interesting though is that NetherRealm is keeping MK11 going, instead of immediately going for a new game/sequel so fast. This is pretty refreshing and bodes well for them.

@Yurdle: Yes, I am surprised they have not released MK12 too, they must be making good money on DLC then. So your saying the only way for them to survive into the future is to release new content, even when graphics hit a plateau & it is the online multiplayer that will ensure their continuous revenue? So each few years they put out a new game/version and in order to be part of a larger online player base the loyal fighters buy in.

Hopefully the news is a "Complete Edition"

Between this, Tekken 7, Soul Calibur 6, Street Fighter 5, and Dragon Ball Fighter Z all taking their SWEET TIME to release the 'full game', I feel like I haven't gotten my hands on a new fighting game in a few years now.

I'm all for DLC, and even more so with a fighting game... but years and years of season passes that cost more than the game? No.

Just, please let this be "Mortal Kombat 11: Komplete Edition"
