Mortal Kombat Movie Writer Has Big Plans For A Sequel

Forget Earthrealm and Outworld. The Mortal Kombat movie's writer wants to go somewhere entirely new to introduce his favorite character.

The new Mortal Kombat movie is in theaters and on HBO Max right now. If you haven't watched it, check out GameSpot's Mortal Kombat review for an idea of what you're missing out on. Given everything that happens at the end of the movie--including a tease of what's to come--it's clear that the film's creative team has some big ideas for a sequel. What, exactly, do they want to do, though?

Speaking to Syfy Wire, the movie's writer Greg Russo revealed a new location he would like the next movie in the franchise to visit, should it get made. "One of the realms that I felt like it didn't make sense to introduce in this story because we were so focused on Earthrealm and Outworld, was Edenia, which is another big realm in the Mortal Kombat universe," he teased.

Now Playing: Mortal Kombat (2021) Cast Plays Real or Fake Game Character

If you're going to Edenia, naturally you'd expect to see the realm's royalty--which is exactly what Russo has in mind. "My favorite character, Kitana, is a princess in Edenia and it just didn't feel right to bring her in," he said. "There's other characters too that people love there, like Sindel and Jade and all those characters. So that's a whole realm that I think is worth exploring, and I have some really cool ideas of what I would do with storylines there."

Of course, given the tease at the end of Mortal Kombat, you should also expect the arrival of Johnny Cage in the next film. However, while a poster of the character is seen in the first film, nobody has been chosen to actually portray Johnny yet.

"I haven't actually done enough of a character exploration," director Simon McQuoid previously told GameSpot. "I know who Johnny Cage [the character] is, I understand. But I haven't really put a lot of thought to [who could play him], because it's not something at the time [that] we needed to... [I] had enough characters to think about."

Hopefully, now McQuoid, Russo, and the rest of the Mortal Kombat team will get the chance to flesh out their ideas. With an impressive box office haul for pandemic era movie-going, plus a launch on HBO Max, it's not out of the realm of possibility that we'll see another Mortal Kombat movie.

This new movie is utter garbage on almost every single level. Even the 1995 original blows it out of the water. The writing and acting were painful to watch. They need a completely different team to work on the following movies in the series.

Please don't :| Big fan of mortal kombat have been since its original release in 92 not a fan of this movie. How about the guys who did Mortal Kombat legacy those were good shorts. Mk Legacy II wasn't great admidilly. How about the writers of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's revenge that was a good animated movie.

The sequel to the prequel even though Goro and Mileena are dead? Is the tournament taking place on Shang Tsung’s Island or is it taking place in Outworld after the Tarkatan horde capture Sonya? But does his invasion of armies mean more than that so it’ll be like MK3? I wouldn’t mind a sequel but not if most of the fights are going to be edited together into a messy montage of some good clips and some not so good ones. You saved on budget to stay in a desert’s temple which doesn’t look much different to how Outworld was depicted.

Was disappointed by the movie. Felt like amateur hour fan-fiction.

How about.. the actual tournament maybe? Shao Khan? Quan Chi? More of the actual.. problems, and reasons FOR the tournament, and what that actually means for earthrealm? Get rid of the random OC shoehorned in for "accessibility"

Too late to turn away from this "once you're chosen you get super powers" thing, but you can still do better by the actual lore.

Kitanas fans were in the background, and Mileena exists, at this point.. Edenia should have already been conquered and be pretty irrelevant as a place.. outside of the few fighters from there at this point..

Hopefully one of those plans includes making a good movie. The new one is absolutely terrible.

Edenia...

Well, that would include Kitana and Sindel, possibly Kitana's father and Shao Kahn of course will have a role to play in there. Probably in a 'flash back' sequence where their family drama started.

However, now that Mileena is dead, there's going to be no "Dueling Sisters" drama between Kitana and Mileena, which is a big part of Kitana's (and Mileena's) story as well. They shouldn't have introduced Mileena in the first movie, and instead kept her for the sequel in order to have both Kitana and her sister in the same one. Now the only thing we'll have in the sequel (outside of the Edenia stuff) is a Kitana maybe referencing that her sister is dead and that's about it.

Then again, let me guess... Shang Tsung will "make a new Mileena" in the flesh pits for the sequel, obviously.

@rekonym: Or they just never explore that story. Not like this one was really focused on telling stories, I’d expect more of the same and you and everyone else who wanted it would probably end up disappointed when it ended up being a throwaway scene.
