Mortal Kombat X Has Series' First Gay Character (Maybe)

Mortal Kombat X newcomer might be gay.

Kung Jin, a new playable character in Mortal Kombat X, might well be the series' first gay character, at least according to Gay Star News. That's based on two big pieces of evidence. The first is a cutscene, shown above, where Kung Jin has a conversation with series regular, Raiden.

The above video shows a scene between the two fighters after a battle. In it, Kung Jin says that fighting Raiden made him "feel like shit." Raiden comforts him by saying "Self-loathing has always been an unfortunate part of your make-up."

Raiden tries to convince Kung Jin to train in Shao Lin and become a warrior, honoring his ancestors. In response, Kung Jin says, "I can't… they won't… accept…" Raiden interrupts him, saying "They care only about what is in your heart. Not whom your heart desires."

The next bit of evidence comes from a tweet by the cinematic director for Mortal Kombat X, Dominic Cianciolo, who seemed to confirm the rumors. "I see people are picking up on the subtle exposition contained in Kung Jin's flashback," he said. "Glad we have observant fans!"

What do you think? Is that enough to conclude Kung Jin is homosexual, or are some fans too quick to jump to conclusions?

Highlighting a characters sexual preference in a game like mortal kombat, where the purpose of the game is to kill, and protect the future of earth realm, is beyond unnecessary and completely ridiculous. As subtle as it may be, are they honestly trying to send a message of tolerance and acceptance in a game where you can rip someone's guts out through their ass?

Normal people don't want g@y crap forced on them, ESPECIALLY when they're forking over plenty of cash to have fun. I'm glad I didn't spend money on this game and I will not be spending any money on future Mortal Kombat games.

Wow. This comment section is disappointing.

Everyone was all excited about Mortal Kombat's character building in MK9 but when they add a homosexual character in MKX now everyone's all like "why does it matter, this isn't news, it doesn't matter in a fighting game." Yeah, god forbid someone makes a great fighting game and also concerns itself with characters, and actually tries some additional human representation.

This move is newsworthy precisely BECAUSE of the reaction you see in the comments section. Clearly, there is still enough intolerance in this industry's audience to make the developmental decision controversial.

We obviously have a long way to go (as evidenced by this comments sections), so at this point in our society's evolution, inclusion is to be encouraged, if not applauded.

TBH, when I saw the title of the article in my facebook feed I though it would be about Erron Black. Because I'm sure this character is also gay....

It's probably more homophobic to use a gay character as an excuse for a story and to generate traffic. It just doesn't f***ing matter!

Enough with this social justice crap. I'm not homophobic but what is the point of making a gay character in a game where sexual orientation is completely irrelevant?

@fire897: yes youre right. here's an idea.everyone in mortal kombat 11 is Asexual.

Obviously we'd have to rewrite the history of the story so that all the characters introduced here dont exist, the ones related to previous characters anyway. I mean, why would Johnny be attracted to Sonya and have a child with her if they we're both asexual for example. well i suppose we could tweak their names.

Anyway, I'm sure there's got to be some way to completely eradicate sexuality from the games history in the next game to assist in making the future of its story mode more relevant to the genre of its birth.

I suppose it could be a total reboot like 9. but when johnny and sonya meet he can be all like. "hello fellow human. whom I have no obvious attraction to. I am an actor. I am called mr.Johnny Cage. we shall fight in this tournament thing that's happening and then return to our sleeping pods to which we all originally were born from, with no aid of sexual human interaction at all."

We can see where the story goes from there.

from the sounds of it the development team, or more specifically the scrip writers handled the characters sexuality perfectly in the game. by barely making it a thing.

he is a fighter, he happens to maybe be homosexual, thats the end of it.

It doesn't matter he is gay, but it does matter that no one in the story made a big thing of it. Or better still, it wasn't made a/the motivation for the character.

This is a perfect example of how to handle any characters sexuality. It's sad that its so rare that it is still worthy of note, but this is why its a story worth making note of.

By making it a news story the site does undo a tiny amount of that good work, making his homosexuality a bigger story then it is to the characters in the game oddly, but i note that, again, the intent was to highlight why this was a good thing. depth of writing and more naturalistic and open minded storytelling.

I did not even know sexual orientation mattered in a game such as this. Unless someone brings it up, like the click-bait article as this, I'd never know kicking someone to death or ripping their heart out was a significance of what theyd do sexual to the organs later. Pointless chatter.

This would be funny, if Gamespot didn't know exactly what would happen when they published it.

Quite literally feeding the trolls Gamespot, cut it out.

As a society we aren't supposed to see race, gender, or sexual preference, yet the first sign of a "gay" character and were all over it. Who cares.

@Nibraybirk: If we're not supposed to care about sexual preference, then why are they shoving it in our faces in a game?

@DarkShrapnel: You don't have to buy the game, so they are not shoving it in your face. If you don't want to buy a game because of a gay character by all means don't.

I absolutely love this article. It's so sad. I just love seeing legit news like "Ultimate Street Fighter IV Release Date Announced" and then right under it I see "Mortal Kombat X newcomer might be gay".

Never stop trying GameSpot. Slow news days result in hilarious and pointless articles. I also like that my comment is pending for profanity for using "gay" and yet that word is in the article's headline.

TBH I wasn't aware of that when playing story mode. All I cared was the next fight. But it's good to know that, even in the absurd world of MK, the character roster can be slightly reflective of a real life's population (even if it's 1 in 25). And then you have insect-likes, giant-girl thing, green gas in bandages... nobody says anything about their rightful existence.

@morocheuk: Even if it's 1 in 25? Really? So how much should it be? 1 in 25 is 4%. Most contemporary surveys state gays constitute just below 2% of general population, so they seem already over-represented in the game.
