Multiple Assassin's Creed Series Coming To Netflix, Including Live-Action Show

Netflix and Ubisoft are working together on live-action, anime, and animated adaptations of Assassin's Creed.

Assassin's Creed is coming to Netflix, and it's doing so in a big way. Ubisoft and the streaming company have announced plans for multiple adaptations of the Assassin's Creed series, including a live-action version that will be executive produced by Ubisoft's Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik. That series is still seeking a showrunner and all of this sounds like early days, but it seems like a major partnership.

The announcement doesn't share much detail yet, merely saying that it will tap into the video game series' dynamic stories for live-action, animated, and anime series. Given the nature of Assassin's Creed, these could all be set during different historical eras. Netflix also shared a teaser feature video featuring the iconic assassin logo in bright Netflix-red.

"We're excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin's Creed is beloved for," said Netflix original series VP Peter Friedlander, in the announcement. "From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy."

This wouldn't be the first time the Assassin's Creed series has been adapted by Hollywood. A 2016 movie starring Michael Fassbender was set during the Spanish inquisition, but it was a critical flop. Ubisoft has been pursuing film and TV adaptations, including animated shows, for quite a while, though, even breaking out its own division.

Netflix has already begun adapting several Ubisoft series, including Skull & Bones and Beyond Good & Evil. Netflix has been quick to snatch up video game properties more broadly as well, with recent series like Castlevania and Dragon's Dogma and the upcoming Resident Evil.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft is continuing to develop its Assassin's Creed fiction on the video game side, with the impending release of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. That game, set during the Viking age, will release on November 10, right next to the launches of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. It will also feature a free next-gen upgrade.

Are they going to follow an interesting character with interesting family lines. Just to turn the viewer into the main protagonist and bring in some of the driest Assassins in the entire series. Just like the AC video games?

If so, I’m passing this like the plague.

I would like to see a real budget behind it and have them explore eras that the games only touched on. Or if it were an era from the game, it would be cool to see it from the perspective of a different assassin. Like you see Ezio from afar through the eyes of a different assassin.

What could be interesting is if they explore the modern day lore a bit more. I love all the new games, but after 2012, it's been pretty static. There's been little to no forward progress. There's so much they COULD do with it, and use movies/TV series to really expand the story, as opposed to just re-hashing it.

On the flip side, if they even just put Ezio's story on screen (for all the players who didn't play the game, which equals about the world population minus 10 million or so)- it'd be a pretty engaging story to enjoy.

@Bleys987: I would rather they explore eras that are touched on in the games, but never seen.

@Sepewrath: That's cool too, though feel free to elaborate. :) There's so much there - I mean, for example, they have alluded to China, Russia and India, b/c of those smaller, side scroller games, but those are hardly in depth.

Course, with a literal entire world, and 2000 years of history to explore, there's certainly no lack of content they could use. I just hope they break some new ground going forward (like they did in their original games, with current timelines interwoven with past ones). It was certainly a winning combination.

Just give me a scene in which a failed assassin trainee tries to jump from a tall building onto some hay and splits his head on the edge of the cart.......

@matetricks: They don't cancel things that people actually watch. And unlike broadcast shows, they know EXACTLY who's watching (except for the pirated stuff).

But will it be good?

That's the big question.

With the success that the Witcher had with Netflix perhaps there is hope for Assassins Creed. Then again... this is Hollywood.

@xZedZdeDx: Im not arguing that the watch numbers were high, but just like a shitty movie with a big name that is released will have high opening weekend numbers, people probably watched this due to the witcher brand and the involvement of Henry Cavill, but it is agreed within the fan community that the series was not up to par.

@notjm: I think many enjoyed the show, the user reviews are far higher than critic scores; so you're way off base here.

@notjm: Agreed by whom? What community? Care to point to some numbers before you're speaking "for the community"? I've been playing Witcher since the first one, read all the books, and absolutely loved the adaptation.

In fact, you're one of the first people I've seen actually give it a negative review, anywhere.

@Bleys987: Maybe you are right, the fact of the matter is, I dont care enough to do the research about whether the community liked it or not, and have that back and forth with you where I provide some evidence supporting my claims and then you refute those, so I will just say, you win bud..... I must go have sex now, bye.

Assassin's Creed has lost it's point since the times of Ezio. The story has no continuity. No end point./ Nothing for us to be remotely attached to.

It's kind like Umbrella Corporation. After the 3rd game, things just lost its track. No one knows what they were trying to achieve.

I hope the TV series has some continuity, some ideas of what they're actually trying to achieve, but knowing Netflix, it will be a soft story with some killing in between and mediocre at best.

Let's see if they at least grab a person who played the games to vet the script.

Not gonna lie, Assassins Creed has just become background noise to me at this point. "Oh they are making a new game, oh they are making a tv series, oh they are doing etc" There just isnt anything for me to get excited about anymore.

@toonami4life: They're just shooting out AC games. Like shit out of a horse on a prune and fiber tablet diet.

I cannot fathom why anyone gets excited about these games at all. I’ve been a fan since 1. But, after Syndicate I can’t stand looking at the games anymore. I’ve played 7 of the mainstream series, and 2 of the spin-off games. And, I can tell you that the formula is as fresh as an egg omelet left out in the back yard for 9 months. It’s literally the same thing each game. Adding new garbage to increase the value, while leaving the assassinating part unrefined and dry as can be. It’s just dozens of collecting challenges (With literally only one being worth your time), Dealing with stock and trade for money (Until it gets pointless once you run out of things to buy), Assassinating some dudes (as usual), and side activities that are fun the first 3 times but feel like actual work after that. That would be Okay for just one, or two, or hell even three games. But, 12 GAMES!?! That’s the textbook example of excessive.

I know people like different stuff. But I didn’t think people would like repetitive cookie-cutter garbage so much.

@illegal_peanut: I've not played an AC game properly in years, but I've heard and read that Origins and Odyssey in particular mix up the gameplay quite a bit, making them more akin to RPGs than the ACs of old. Their biggest complaint is that the play areas are too large and, as is par for the course for Ubisoft games, has lots of cookie cutter quests. IMO they really need to go along the lines of the Witcher or Elder Scrolls and tailor make all the activities, rather than just use a small selection of templates that they then copy/paste all over the place - gives a game much more character.

As an aside, Syndicate, from my own experience , was the worst of all ACs to date, with the template really stale by that point. I don't think I got through more than a couple of hours before I dropped it.

My exact thoughts, and that's what exactly happened to me as well.

And about the open-world thing. I feel Ubisoft uses it as a way to mask the fact that they can't make a fun game. Like how EA makes graphically beautiful games to mask their game issue. I bet if both of them were to make a linear game story, with linear levels. It would get a solid 6/10 at best. 4/10 at worse.
