My Time With The PS5 Pro Reaffirmed I Shouldn't Spend $700 Right Now--My Base PS5 Is Still Enough

I can see how this console will make developers happy, but it doesn't feel like most players are going to get a lot out of it.

The PlayStation 5 Pro seems like a tough sell, especially to players who already own the original PS5. That's a sentiment I had going into a preview event for the PS5 Pro and one I still have after spending a few hours with the new console.

If I didn't already have a PS5, then the PS5 Pro would be on my shortlist--the level of detail it brings to Pro-enhanced games like Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and Horizon Forbidden West is incredible, catapulting the experience of playing a game so that it now gets performance mode-style frame rates with fidelity mode-style graphics. And, of course it does. The PS5 Pro's hardware is superior to the base PS5--it should make games look better. But nothing at the event convinced me I needed to go out and get a Pro the moment it launches. It's clear that, for now at least, the base PS5 is still perfectly serviceable when it comes to playing PlayStation's first-party titles. I'm more than content to save my $700. For my full thoughts on my time with the PS5 Pro, watch the video embedded below.

Now Playing: The PS5 Pro Surprised Us In Our Hands-On

To better understand how the PS5 Pro is impacting how PlayStation's first-party studios will be developing their games going forward, I spoke with Sony Interactive Entertainment senior principal product manager Toshi Aoki. We also discussed the technical details and the development of PS5 Pro, such as the implementation of the console's cooling systems to ensure the Pro doesn't run hotter than the base PS5 despite the boosts to the GPU.

Does the PS5 Pro alleviate anything on PlayStation Studios? In terms of the work that they're doing with their games, does this console help them at all?

Toshi Aoki: Well, developers always want more. Whatever we give them, they actually use it up, which is a great thing because we are here to support the creators to create and realize their visions. The more range or options they have, the happier [they are]. And when the creators are happy, they create awesome games, which then makes the players happy. It creates that great flywheel, and we want to make sure that we keep that creative vision coming and flowing. I think that's a great direction that we're going with together with the developers.

A lot of PlayStation games support both performance and fidelity modes. With the PS5 Pro, what happens with those modes? Is there still a noticeable difference choosing one over the other? Or do they now behave virtually the same?

It will differ per game depending on what modes they already had and how [their respective developers] want to showcase [the game] to the players. So far, we've [mostly] seen [developers] mainly [realizing] that you don't have to make that choice [anymore]. That there is one mode that gives you both of the benefits. That's kind of the target the teams are going forward with.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was the most impressive game I saw running on PS5 Pro.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was the most impressive game I saw running on PS5 Pro.

Just from the games that I've seen so far, it seems like there's a range of differences between games--Marvel's Spider-Man 2 only had a few differences, for example, whereas Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart had a more noticeable transformation between the standard PS5 on performance mode and the PS5 Pro. Is there one game in particular folks should check to see the greatest difference between what the PS5 and PS5 Pro can do?

I honestly like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. That one probably has the biggest jump, when you look at PS5 and PS5 Pro. Again, it'll differ per game of course, so it's difficult to say what's good and what's even better. I think Final Fantasy is a good showcase that you should try out.

[Rebirth] is a game where I think when we see the screenshots, it's always coming from the fidelity mode. But if you are the person who wants to switch to 60fps, the visuals do get downgraded to meet the hit. I think [performance mode] is the choice that the players are taking, and that's where we want to give players the best of both worlds.

As someone who likes to position all of his consoles together next to the TV so they look pretty but has to make sure they all have enough air flow, how hot does the PS5 Pro get, especially since it's doing a lot more than the original PS5?

Our cooling system is all designed to make sure that it is at the same level as the PS5. You can see it later when you see the actual [console], it is slightly bigger and has more vents, so that we have more airflow.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 looked pretty much the same on PS5 and PS5 Pro but I could see far-off skyscrapers more clearly on the latter.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 looked pretty much the same on PS5 and PS5 Pro but I could see far-off skyscrapers more clearly on the latter.

I'm someone who bought the PS5 on day one, and I pretty much only play it for PlayStation first-party exclusives--is the PS5 Pro a console for folks like me?

Well, it is for the enthusiasts, the most engaged players. Which could be our initial early adopters who purchased the PS5. Also, people who have not come yet, maybe on other devices, but would want to play on the big-screen TVs. Have that capability on the console now that would shift over. We're not targeting just like the current PS5 owners, that's not it. It's more for the game enthusiasts who want to have that gameplay experience, which could be new users as well.

Given the higher specs of the PS5 Pro, is there now a higher benchmark for PlayStation studios to play with when designing games with performance and fidelity modes?

Well, we can't speculate about the future. But, from history, when creators get more things to play with, they do [tend to] push the boundaries and go for more. Because I think from a creative perspective, they have so many ideas. They want to add so many details, so many gameplay details as well, the smoothness side as well.

The reality of 60 frames per second is that you have to write a lot of pixels or have AI upscalers do it for you. I think [studios] will still push the performance of the devices that they're on. I think that will continue. Right now, I think the PS5 Pro will be the new benchmark that they'll be targeting, and our hope is that the best game experience is going to be on the PS5 Pro.

I'm eager to see how the new Horizon Zero Dawn remaster plays on PS5 Pro.
I'm eager to see how the new Horizon Zero Dawn remaster plays on PS5 Pro.

What's the thing that you're most excited about for players to see and experience when they get their hands on this new console when it comes out?

Well, definitely when they play a game, they just really get immersed in it. That's our target: having players play the game and then just love playing it without that trade-off that they might be making right now or [making a] selection they might be [forced] to make right now... That will really make me happy.

The media outlets really trying to sell the ps5 pro.

It's a PS5.. pfcourse it's got some slightly newer technology.. I bought my old one like 4 years ago now.. but the price doubling, no disc drive.. is just wild confidence. This is first PS I won't be buying.. since the original PS1.

Over 1000aud for a console.. we aren't there yet.. and I gotta buy full price digital games as well?

Man the Japanese are hallucinating

Excellent article.... hopefully people knows better than spending $700.00 on a system that can't automatically enhance every game.

And it still doesn't come with a disc drive...lol

Ya know what would be nice? If Sony tv's had PS5 on cloud built-in and you just connected a Dual Sense via Bluetooth. So no console needed, just a tv and controller.

I have a slick 2023 Sony Bravia Class TV that has all the bells and whistles. Definitely the type of tv that could have something like that. This would help Sony sell more tv's as well, plus consumers would get a tv that can do everything the console needs. But I know Sony already got in trouble for selling some of their cheaper tv's labeled as "PS5 Ready." The tv's couldn't fully take advantage of the PS5's without HDMI 2.1 and didn't have VRR and ALLM. They really are a scuzzy company, lol.

I don't see how this is going to make devs happier if they're still going to need to make two slightly different versions of each game (one optimized for reg PS5 & the other unleashed by the Pro), for the next two to four years or longer.

I had a second point about that but I forgot. Lol.

@Jarrkha: yeah, it’s not like the base ps5 disappears, and it should be well optimized too.

PS4 pro is a nice upgrade, plus launch ps4 is SO loud I can’t stand it.

But I got my ps4 pro for $320!

Ps5 pro is like $780!

@amichalski81: that sounds like good advice, though in my case it sounded horrible from the first time I booted it.

I was way happier with my launch Xbox One and my PS4 Pro. My Pro isn't silent, but it's not insane.

@wolfpup7: Of course, but it's a bit cheeky having to buy it separately - being in the UK it'll add around £100 to the overall price tag, not cheap.

What Sony has created with this Pro is a marketing scheme gone wrong that they can't back themselves out of. It's universally frowned upon all over the world, it's too expensive and the PS5 will serve someone who already owns it for many years to come. There was no point to this addition other than to milk the consumers with "Pro" applicable games.

It sounds more like a moody chore rather than a pleasant and refreshing experience.

I don't have a PS5 because I waited for this and I still won't be getting it. The high price coupled with the lack of a disc drive is a no. A base PS5 at a good deal will be simply better.

@jimabadon: You can thankfully add a drive, but not including it means the real US price is $780. Hardly the worst deal of all time, but...that's obviously a...I mean you can literally get gaming PCs for that price that are okay, and it's a big chunk of a better one. And for something that may get replaced in a few years.

I'd love one for Ghost and Ratchet and stufff, but...

I will pre-order in a couple hours. As for a PC, the 4090 has been out forever. Heck if I'm going to buy that at the same price now. I'll wait for the next gen of that, which will be at that price when it does come.

CHECK THAT: both Amazon and Wallmart sites now say pre-orders don't begin until 10/10 7am PST. So, despite all the negative articles and posts in comments sections, I have a feeling this thing is not going to be super easy to get. I hope not.

Even though this is a bigger improvement than the PS4 Pro was over the PS4, it won’t get my money. I’m a huge PlayStation fan, and I would’ve been trading my base PS5 in for this if the price were $600 — maybe even $650 — and came with a disc drive, but making this $300 more than the base (after tax and with the disc drive that will be hard to find) is absurd. At that price, I’d much rather start building a PC. Yes, this is still cheaper than anything you can build comparably, but at this point, I might as well start getting pieces and eventually end up with something so much stronger.

@stickemup: is it? PS4 Pro literally doubled the GPU and added 30% CPU. This basically raises PS5 up to Xbox Series X specs (which, okay, is still a big upgrade, but not double), then adds the AI hardware (technically Series also has that, but way less AFAIK). That upscaling may in fact make it a bigger upgrade than 4 Pro, but I'm honestly not sure. Plus 4 pro fixed 4's jet engine problem, and slotted in at the same price. I got mine for $320 less than a year later, versus $780.

I'd like one? But... probably stick to Xbox/Switch 2/Windows, I guess.

Ghost and Ratchet though!!!!

@wolfpup7: Maybe I should have said that the games will get a bigger upgrade than the PS4 Pro enhanced games, rather than saying the console is a bigger upgrade. Just about every PS4 Pro enhanced game only gave you higher resolution and a more stable framerate, but they remained at 30fps. Very few had a framerate boost. Whereas this time around, it sounds like most games will basically let you have the higher framerate, along with the resolution.

@stickemup: People also forget that with a PC (and I'll already say I'm not condoning the practice in any way, I'm just stating a fact) you can get / download the games for free if you want (cracked or not). Examples: Cyberpunk 2077 (GOG / CDPR does not apply DRM to their games, so you can pretty much just download it). Recently released God of War Ragnarok (no DRM, but needed to be cracked. As other Sony releases on PC) was cracked on "day 1". There are countless examples, but I'm not gonna list 'em, since I can be accused (by staff or otherwise) of condoning it (which I am not). Sure, games that employ DRM have to be purchased legally, like recently released Wukong / SW Outlaws / NBA 2k25 (or one have to wait for it to be cracked / DRM to be removed by the dev / company... which happened recently with Jedi Survivor). But at least they sell at the same price as their console counterparts (no physical purchase anymore though, only digital as far as I know). The bad side is that DRM takes a toll on your CPU (because it need to be running on the background the whole time) and game performance get hindered at times.

I won't even get into the realm of games that can be modded to be so much better than the originals, emulators (of a plethora of consoles, including the Switch running better AND at higher resolutions than the Switch itself), and so on... Modded Cyberpunk 2077 is a thing of beauty. The same as is playing Zelda BOTW at 4k and 60 FPS on Cemu.

Also, if you have to money to invest in a powerful GPU (a 4090 is the most expensive out there, sometimes going over 2000 dollars), it just eats up ANY game at true 4k / 60 FPS with not much hassle. I own one, and it doesn't even get to 65 - 70ºC with a game running at those clocks I mentioned, with all graphics maxed out. It's quite a nice piece of computer engineering (it's very expensive for sure, but it's worth every penny).

Well, I'm not sure if it's needed to say at this point that this console is pretty much not worth the price of admission... but how far a few fanatics will go to defend its beloved company? When the base Ps5 announced SSD's hard drives, these same people went bananas, forgetting (or most probably never knowing) that SSD tech have been consumer-level on PC's for longer than 15 years. As such, it's pretty safe to say that console "enthusiasts" know jack-squat about hardware. I've witnessed an "enthusiast" claiming that the Ps5 Pro's GPU is similar to a 4070, which made me burst in laugher. The said GPU (an AMD XFX Speedster Radeon RX 6800) is much more similar to a 3070, or a 3080 tops.

If these "enthusiasts" wanted to brag about anything (they can't, since they know nothing about software too!) they could go about the Ps5's ability to use "Kraken data compression". A most recent example is that the PC version of God of War Ragnarok takes up a whooping 190 Gb's of a PC hard drive (160, if you can get your hands on a repack without multi-language support, but that's another story ;) ), while the Ps5 version takes up "only" 85 GB's (an absurd 125% less). All because of the compression methods.

PlayStation 5 Hits Game Data Compression Ratios the Xbox Doesn't Touch

But the base Ps5 uses that very same compression, so the fact that the Pro uses it is irrelevant.

@rotchild: I think games on Windows though are going to include higher/lower quality assets and code that's not needed on Playstation, like to potentially cover higher/lower settings, alternate rendering methods, that kind of thing, so may take up more space because of that.

Just remembered that Xbox 360 games might be a fraction of the size on other platforms yet look effectively the same, which was kind of a riot but for similar reasons

I've heard Xbox Series X has suffered too by some developers being like "well this is a lot more powerful, so we'll just dump the generic PC code on it and let the hardware deal with the inefficiency of not optimizing it" + upscaling and high resolutions kind of hiding the differences.

It's basically for people who don't want to be dealing with a blur fest when choosing performance mode. Games that are pushing the PS5 hardware render at a very low base resolution. FSR has poor image clarity and image stability after reconstruction/upscaling. Replacing FSR with PSSR and using the extra GPU power for a higher base resolution will improve this situation. It is not going to turn the console into a high end PC, but it will make things more bearable. Console gamers will finally start to appreciate what modern game engines like UE5 can offer.

It is a decent upgrade for consoles, but it is not cheap. When you factor in the cost of the console, disc drive, PS+ subscriptions over a few years, etc., you might as well build yourself a gaming PC if you are open to making the switch. You will get better quality and access to the biggest library of games including the MS and Sony first party games.

@BassMan: if it could be a $100-200 add on...

I haven't looked in to it yet, but I wonder if it helps anything if I want higher setting at 30fps...but 60 with quality settings might still be a nice upgrade.

I've never even played a game with FSR, but all the coverage makes it seem dubious. I don't even know for sure I'd like what Nvidia is doing.

I think Eurogamer asked this a while back. Who is the PS5 Pro actually for? The PS4 Pro was aimed at the 4K TV owners as there was a huge jump from HD to 4K TV owners halfway through the PS4 reign therefore the Pro (for all its £350) was justifiable. However, not many of us have 8K telly’s and current Performance modes are so refined it’s sometimes difficult to tell them apart from Fidelity or Resolution modes. The only real contender here is Ray Tracing and the jury’s still out on the future of that one IMO as most devs dont commit to it and put in lazy ray tracing techniques (like ray traced shadows - yawn) just to tick a box. The results are usually shit. Therefore, what this really means is devs will just have to spend more time optimising the game for another console and another upscaling technique to add to DSS and FSR - hotfixing weekly to remove more and more visual artefacts for a console no one owns bar “console enthusiasts”.

Slight side rant but what the **** is a console enthusiast, anyway? PC enthusiasts or frame chasers I understand - you have unlimited freedom (and resources) to tune, upgrade and tweak to your hearts content to improve visual quality and FPS (or both). PC’s are modular so upgrade what you can and post those vids. It’s an arena of Overclocking and CAS timings. But with a console you’re still limited to the hardware, the dev and the locked down OS. I don’t get calling it an enthusiasts console.

On the plus side, maybe this will introduce more path tracing support for games but TBH you’re going to need a hell of a lot more Teraflops there, Sony. Or maybe it’s just their way of saying you’ll need this to play GTA6 in the same visual fidelity as what’s been advertised.

Unlike when the PS4 Pro was announced, I’m not feeling the new console urge or FOMO here. Therefore, in the words of Austin Powers when demonstrating his shit black jack skills - I’ll stay.
