Mythic Entertainment folded into BioWare

EA confirms Warhammer Online studio given new "BioWare Mythic" name; no development changes indicated.

About this time last year, Electronic Arts tweaked its organizational structure to lump BioWare and Mythic Entertainment into a newly formed massively multiplayer online/role-playing game group. The move put BioWare heads Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk atop the pyramid, while longtime Mythic boss and cofounder Mark Jacobs departed the company. Now, EA has taken one more step toward folding the two studios together, confirming for GameSpot today that Mythic Entertainment has been renamed BioWare Mythic.

Mythic just got some new group mates.
Mythic just got some new group mates.

The move comes as Mythic continues to struggle gaining traction with its big-budget fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Having received solid reviews following its September 2008 launch, Warhammer Online initially appeared to be on a World of Warcraft-challenging trajectory. Three weeks after launch, the game peaked at 750,000 registered users, but that figure had dwindled to just 300,000 by February 2009. EA has not offered an updated subscriber count since then.

In March 2009, Mythic announced that it would be taking 63 of the game's servers offline in an effort to consolidate the evaporating player base. Mythic was also reportedly heavily affected by EA's substantial headcount reduction enacted at the end of 2009. According to unconfirmed reports, more than one-third of the studio was laid off as part of EA's 1,500-job culling.

Mythic's new status as a BioWare studio makes it the second MMORPG-focused outfit within the Edmonton, Canada-based developer's structure. The other studio, BioWare Austin, is currently at work on EA's next big effort to crack the MMORPG market, Star Wars: The Old Republic. That title is currently slated for a 2011 launch on the PC.

EA did not indicate whether Mythic's role within the company would change or whether the rebranding would affect Warhammer Online.

I have my respect for Bioware for KOTOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect with that experience and know how I am confident they will make WAR true to its purpose. I also applaud Mythic for making WAR bolder and staying true to the iconic roots of human, orcs, dwarfs, elves & chaos universe of Warhammer. Mythic's brazen claims will be realized now Bioware is there and better. I bid for Warhammer Online no matter what because that game is a beautiful and brutal art! You have to experience it to know what I'm talking about. I am looking forward to resub before i get to taste SWOR. Bioware Mythic FTW!

I think Mythic BioWare as a company name sounds more adventurous, or mythical as the case may be.

Mythic is a poor game dev anyways. Maybe they will regain some cred with BioWare in front of their name.

Warhammer's biggest problem is that it's built around PvP. The PvP demographic has always been the loudest one in online games, not a large one.

Hopefully BioWare isn't being forced to "fix" Warhammer Online. They've had a lot on their plate recently, and lumping them with another studio like this can't help. I was a HUGE fan of BioWare with Baldur's Gate 1/2/Throne of Bhaal, Neverwinter Nights, Knights 1; they were all beyond amazing. Sonic RPG's gameplay was really inconsistent, Mass Effect 2 felt incredibly rushed (while I still enjoyed the continuing story), Dragon Age felt like a shoddy "remake" of Baldur's Gate-style gaming, just without a great story. Knights: Online is looking quite nice though, and I hope the end product reaffirms my love for the studio. Maybe Mythic can help with PvP?

@XeonForce I appreciate the apology, but don't worry about it. There was just a simple misunderstanding. Heaven knows I have been misunderstood enough times; that's for sure. So don't worry about it. As far as Dragon Age: Origins goes, you make a good point. This is one of the few games that was a PC port that ended up slightly better on PS3. Basicly, Dragon Age: Origins ended up with the following pluses and minuses on each console: * Although the TV sets may have said they were receiving a 1280x720p output from both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions (since that was the native resolution being output), the fact of the matter is that the Xbox 360 version did not include all of the pixel detail. The reason for this is because Dragon Age: Origins was one of the few games (less than 1%) where 8GB is not enough space to hold all the texture detail in a game. The developers literally needed to make a choice between not including all the textures or keeping all the textures--but with a lower number of pixels in each texture (essentially lowering the resolution and giving the game a blurrier look). The developers made the right decision by selecting the lesser of two evils. It just so happens that Dragon Age: Origins is a huge game that fell into the 1% of games made this generation that require over 8GB of space. * The Xbox 360 version of Dragon Age: Origins does have a much smoother framerate than the PS3 version due to the superior GPU found in the Xbox 360 hardware. This is the "hardware" type of issue that we see in virtually all PC ports that result in the Xbox 360 version offering a higher level of quality than the PS3 version. Obviously, the Warhammer games wouldn't require as many textures as Dragon Age: Origins. I mean, you only need so many textures for a Mech -- far less than the huge number of textures needed for all those biological beings we see in Dragon Age: Origins. I hope this helps clear things up. Have a happy 4th of July weekend, buddy! :)

@Olmon 300 Yeah, I agree with you 100% Microsoft really needs to loosen up on the strict standards for MMO style games on Xbox Live. I don't understand how they could start off so well with Final Fantasy 11 and Phantasy Star, and then sort of gradually drop the ball over time. One person had said that five years ago Microsoft was the one who needed "them," which is why Microsoft worked hard to make games like that possible. But now it is "them" who need Microsoft, which is why Microsoft wants to force everyone to do what they say. If this is true, I think it's a shame. We all know that pride goes before a fall. The whole Playstation brand name was basically ruined because Sony was arrogant, couldn't see into the future, and wouldn't give developers what they wanted. Let's hope Microsoft doesn't make that same mistake. But so far with MMO style games (a relatively new genre), it doesn't look too good. But, Microsoft's style is usually to let other companies invest the money in R&D and then learn from their mistakes. So, if the MMO genre takes off in popularity, I'm sure we can expect Microsoft to invest the cash where it is needed.

@parrot_of_adun Yeah ^^. I didn't mean it was shameful for Mythic. They are after all part of EA. So they do what they are told. The "Shameful" was aimed at EA. There is no real reason other than using Bioware's name in this. A team that wasn't even theirs and that they had no action in building their popularity. They just spent big bucks to get them once they were popular, and now they are using this popularity to try and boost one of their other studios. And in the act, perhaps hurting Bioware's popularity by making games that aren't that great.

I 'used' to love Bioware as a studio. BG, NWN, KoToR and Mass Effect 1 were probably all my favorite RPG's ever by a long shot. Mass Effect 2, in my opinion, was a load of garbage and Dragon Age was the most recycled and cliched pos I've played in a long time. I'm hoping that Bioware's actual talent is working on SWTOR otherwise I'm a little concerned for the future.

Heh, "solid reviews." Game critics are afraid to give most games anything lower than an 8, especially when it's from a major publisher. "Appeared to be on a World of Warcraft-challenging trajectory." I don't think we played the same game here. The WAR I played was a bloated mess that lacked proper vision or direction.

@SalarianChemist You said that XB360 games ported from PC have a higher quality than PS3 games ported from PC? That's not what GameSpot said about Dragon Age Origins, or Red Alert 3. Look up the review scores if you don't believe me. Dragon Age Origins was made by Bioware, who also makes Mass Effect, and has now absorbed Mythic, which I think could only be a good thing (so long as Old Republic isn't manipulated in the process). Also to respond to Carp93, the PS3 is not "my system". I play DS, Wii, PS3 exclusives, XB360 exclusives, MW2 on both, and many PC titles as well. If I considered any of them to be "my console" it would be my PC that I spent 6 months building. I'm sorry if my previous comment came off as aggressive. I'm not here to start a fight, I just want to make a point.

RIP, Mythic was a great developer of the late 90/early 2000 years. I enjoyed Dark age of Camelot until they ruined it by focusing on the horrible pve and making the grind reach the extreme level of Everquest (trial of Atlantis for those familiar with the game). I just hope current Mythic producers will not touch Kotor; these guys are epic fail.

@XeonForce, Hi buddy. I wanted to take the time to reply to your response to what I had written. Just to keep everyone else up to speed, I originally said that I thought Warhammer Online would make a great release on PC and Xbox 360. Then, XeonForce responded to my comment by saying: "Why wouldn't Warhammer Online make a great PS3 release as well? Not that I foresee any console release of Warhammer Online, I just hate seeing biased comments." Now I am going to explain things in a way that is a little bit more detailed in order to show I am not "biased." First, Warhammer games tend to have the PC as their primary development platform. As we all know, whenever a PC game is ported to a console it means an almost effortless port to the Xbox 360 while the PS3 version tends to make life difficult for the programmers. The reason for this is because the Xbox 360 hardware is virtually identical to a PC while the PS3 hardware is fundamentally different from a PC. This is why the Xbox 360 versions of ported PC games offer a higher level of quality than the PS3 versions. Second, the number of online users speaking the English language is much larger with Xbox Live than it is on the PSN. There would always be far more people to play online with on Xbox Live than the PSN. This is why I think a console version of Warhammer: Online would work great on Xbox 360 and PC but not quite as good on the PS3, unless all the versions were linked together somehow. If that were the case, I'm sure a PS3 version would be great, too. Carp93 actually hit the nail on the head in his response that said: "Just because someone neglects to mention your particular console in their post doesn't instantly make them bias" @Carp93, You are 100% correct. I had actually read several months ago that Warhammer: Space Marine was going to be released for PC and Xbox 360 (but not the PS3). This was the main reason why I only mentioned the PC and Xbox 360 in my original comment. I mean, PS3 owners wouldn't want one Warhammer game if they couldn't have both of them, right. Thankfully, today while reading I found out that THQ has decided to release Warhammer: Space Marine for the PS3, too. This means that you can add the "PS3" to the PC and Xbox 360 in my original comment. This also means that if there is room for one Warhammer game, there is room for more! So, bring on Warhammer Online, too!

@Slash_out This isn't an act on Mythic's part. Both studios are subsidiaries of EA, and EA saw Mythic as being unprofitable, so they took that workforce and put it where they'd lose the least money. It's just consolidation (not that it's a good thing). It's not like Mythic just one day decided that they wanted to take advantage of the Bioware name.

@fancelot Creative freedom is a lot different from complete autonomy. The heads at EA do make calls over BioWare. In addition, I think you are thinking of too literal and simple an explanation of what I wrote. Money corrupts, and I've seen too many companies take the road of profit over quality and loyalty to their customers. I'm not saying that EA will do the same to BioWare that Activision did to IW. I'm simply stating that one day, Ray and Greg might find that EA is pushing BioWare to violate their commitment to quality, and find themselves shelved because of it. Money motivates companies to do all sorts of things. Again, I'm not saying that the above will happen. I certain hope it does not, and I certainly am looking forward to SW:TOR.

@Sins-of-Mosin For them to even consider taking on a staff big enough to rival Blizzard and WoW, they have to have a game better than what's out there. Warhammer is a sinking ship. Perhaps a reworked and retooled sequel to Warhammer would help? Or merge them into the new Star Wars mmorpg.

Considering the amount of staff they have, naturally their MMO is going to suffer. If EA wants to take on WoW then they'll need a staff as large or even larger then theirs. EA so quick to pull the plug on anything that don't offer massive profits from the start.
