Natalie Portman Responds To Scorsese Marvel Debate

The new Thor speaks out.

Acclaimed directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola recently sparked a cinematic debate with some sharp words for Marvel films and similar big-budget blockbusters. It's already resulted in a variety of responses, and the latest comes from Thor herself.

Both of the directors have agreed that the cinematic roller coaster rides like Marvel films are "not cinema," prompting responses from across the film industry. Natalie Portman, star of the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder, politely disagreed with a defense of escapism.

"I think there's room for all types of cinema," Portman told The Hollywood Reporter. "There's not one way to make art. I think that Marvel films are so popular because they're really entertaining and people desire entertainment when they have their special time after work, after dealing with their hardships in real life."

Portman herself has a big role in an upcoming Marvel film, so it stands to reason that she sees the value in them. She's previously starred as Jane Foster, Thor's love interest in his first two movies. She's set to take on the hammer herself in Love and Thunder, adapting a comic story in which Foster became the superhero. But she has more traditionally artistic bona fides as well, having won a Best Actress Academy Award for her turn in the 2010 drama Black Swan.

Several other creatives have stepped forward to voice their opinions as well, including fellow Marvel actor Samuel L. Jackson, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, and Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld. The tone of the feedback has been respectful of Coppola and Scorsese's contributions to cinema. Most recently, Disney CEO Bob Iger said he feels that the strong words are disrespectful to the people who work on them.

"It doesn't bother me, except I am bothered on behalf of the people who work on those movies," Iger said. "I don't take it personally. [Scorsese and Coppola] don't see how the audience is reacting to [Marvel movies], first of all. They're entitled to their opinions."

@storjohan_: In the Marvel universe, Thor is a title more than a name. An inscription on the side of Mjolnir reads "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." In other words, whoever wields the hammer is "Thor". Thor, as we know him, no longer wields Mjolnir, but instead uses a new axe that was forged during Infinity War. Since Portman's character is returning to take up the mantle of Thor, that probably means she is able to wield the hammer (and we don't really know where it wound up after Captain America brought it with him into the past). Considering we now have multiple universes to deal with, we don't even know which "Jane" becomes the new Thor.

I'm not entirely sure how character names will be handled. The modern audience just associates Thor as a name as opposed to a title, and the films themselves have treated it as such for simplicity.

@carlgrimes: Hemsworth is huge and looks powerful, as we would expect from the god of thunder. Portman is tiny and frail. I'm tired of hollywood pushing their "strong female" characters. Did we really need a new Thor? No we did not. How about making original characters instead of genderbending their allready established characters. No? Too much work maybe? Hollywood has gotten really lazy.

Dude is a mid 70's New Yorker, pretentious and arrogant are almost a given.

The Marvel superhero movies are the best thing Hollywood has put out in a long time. Connected, cohesive storylines over 20+ movies and some TV shows (that has never been done before). Some people hate on CGI, but it takes some serious ARTISTIC talent to pull it off like Marvel does, as well as those sound effects. Marvel usually puts out fun movies that are usually well paced and have well timed comedic lines in a story with fun action.

Even if that isn't your cup of tea, I'm not sure he should be hating on Marvel, as much as the rest of Hollywood for pumping out crap lately.

@todddow: Pretty damned far from the best thing Hollywood has put out. Endgame was a mess in almost every way.

"The Marvel superhero movies are the best thing Hollywood has put out in a long time"... with just this line i think you are almost so pretentious and arrogant as you think he is. There are countless more enjoyable movies than Marvel ones. Pay attention, i didn't use the word "better", but "more enjoyable", cause for my taste watching almost the same thing (Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies) over and over again, it's surely not "the best thing Hollywood has put out in a long time".

@der_freischutz: I'm certainly open to watching great movies, some of my favorites were made WELL before Marvel started making films. Please list some movies that you think were some of the best of 2018-19 and I'll check them out.

It's always the same nonsense: "ps4 is better than xone", "no! xone is better!" and so endless battles begin. Let people have an opinion and respect it, it will not change what you like, so where's the problem? I like good movies, Scorsese and Coppola ones and also Marvel ones, but i understand what they are saying. After viewing a lot of Marvel Movies i started to get bored and suddenly decided to take a break from them, they began to seem to me all the same, not by chance the last one i've seen and really liked was Doctor Strange.

there's always some pretentious prick that thinks his shit smells more nuanced, or classic.

comic book movies ARE complete trash, but thats only my opinion about them as a whole, there have been individual movies made that I liked allot. but I get why they are pissed. Scrub Overlords disney have bought literally everything, one day you're npot going to be able to turn on your tv without seeing their fucking logo and everything will be this cbm gash wars shitshow.

i can't think of another debate which is as pointless as this one, books were literature, but comic books were not; books were art, but movies were not; movies were art, action movies were not...

is there an end to this stupidity??? :D

Scorsese is just espousing a mix of sour grapes (no hit films) and snobbery (my film is more art/intellectual than those).

Cinema is what the audience want to see and the audience want quality entertainment.

Superhero/CGI-laden films are not a magic bullet; there's been plenty of flops (Hulk 2003 or Green Lantern anyone?) but GOOD films are worth seeing. Not only that, most if not all of the MCU films, you can see with a family. Not something you could do with Gangs of New York or The Departed. Looking at the top 100 films of all time (https://www.filmsite.org/boxoffice.html) where are Scorsese's films? Nowhere. They just don't attract an audience. Nobody wants to watch. Certainly not me.

You can argue about whose opinion is best/most valid, but in the end people vote with their wallets. Which is why films I would consider to be mediocre, like 2012 (2009) which is 96 in the top 100, made DOUBLE at the box office what Wolf of Wall Street did. Is it twice as good? That part may be subjective, but twice as many paying audience members wanted to watch it and that isn't subjective opinion, that's a fact.

@arithonuk: your fact is misleading. twice as many people implies that those people are of the same consistency. say for instance... there are 5 girls. and then there are 10 boys. 5 girls choose to watch movie 1, but refuse to watch movie 2. however, 10 boys choose to watch movie 2, but refuse to watch movie 1.

if you make something, it will attract that type of audience.

its crazy that in todays outrage culture if you have a differing opinion it better be the one everyone agrees with or it sends the internet in a frenzy

if you are into politics you better lean left.

if you are hungry you better not eat meat or GMO products

if you drive you better be driving something eco friendly

if you are gonna believe in something it better not be relgion

if you are white you better not be proud to be and deconstruct your "privileged" ans take a "back seat"

and the most important of all! more important than race, politics or the environment.

THOU SHALT NOT EVER CRITICIZE DISNEY!!

Not certain I follow: Why would superhero movies as a whole be inherently any less quality than gangster films? Of course, that's not to say some superhero movies aren't less than stellar, but why lump them all into the same quality (or lack thereof) category? Seems to me the Marvel offerings overall tend to be more praised by critics than the vast majority of films in other genres such as drama or comedy. What's more, to Iger's point, one could certainly argue that it takes (considerably) more effort to produce a superhero movie (from costuming, to makeup, to sound editing and mixing, to special and visual effects) than most dramas or comedies. To each her or his own...

Lol. She didn’t want to be in these movies after her first go-around, because they were beneath her. Then they offered her some of that fabled Marvel money. Funny how stories change.

On a different note. Marvel movies are all made with the same cookie cutter. They just use a couple mildly different ingredients in each one. These movies all use the same boring formula, so as to put the least amount of thought into each one. Marvel literally tells directors that they will handle all of the action scenes and then they let the director do a little bit of their vision, while controlling their main vision. That is an actual fact. They straight up tell directors they’ll handle the action scenes. It has been confirmed.

Get mad at me, nerds.

I don't go to a movie to see "art" I go to see a good, entertaining movie. You know like most people without their noses up in the air.

@Wraith3: well that's what they are saying in a sense, people who go to the cinema went for art.

now its been changed to entertain with explosions, pop culture source material and CGI to entertain you like a Theme park ride would.

Maybe the way they said it was condescending but I do get what they mean. everyone is taking their opinion as if they committed a mass shooting lmao

its crazy that in todays outrage culture if you have a differing opinion it better be the oen everyone agrees with or it sends the internet in a frenzy

Ive been reading coming for decades and never been much of a Thor fan. But I’ve recently read the Original Sin series, Mighty Thor and Unworthy Thor and loved it. I don’t know why so many were crying about female Thor before because I thought this whole arc was amazing. I look forward to seeing Live and Thunder and honestly hope they try and make it as similar to the comic storyline as possible.

One thing people forget about Marvel movies is that they're actually worth going to a theater to see. They actually make use of the effects theaters are equipped to process. Even if the movie sucks, at least I can enjoy the presentation. A very plain movie with no real special or audio effects isn't worth a $15+ ticket.

And I'm not sure why people are saying Marvel movies are so bad. Their average metacritic is roughly around the 60 mark, which isn't bad, and they frequently hit the 70 mark, whereas your average DC movie struggles to break 50 and probably average in the 40s. I mean, for crying out loud, we're not talking about Transformers.
