Naughty Dog Is "Done" With Uncharted And Might Not Make Last Of Us 3, Neil Druckmann Says

Or it might, if Naughty Dog can come up with a good enough story for it.

Given the big success of The Last of Us video game series and the new HBO show, fans might be expecting Naughty Dog to make The Last of Us: Part III in the future. That could happen--a plot outline has already been formulated--but Naughty Dog hasn't made any decisions just yet.

The next Last of Us game is the upcoming multiplayer title, which Naughty Dog says is its most ambitious title ever. Speaking to BuzzFeed, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann said he considers the multiplayer game to be "another chapter in the universe of The Last of Us."

But what about a sequel to The Last of Us: Part II? Druckmann said people are "wondering about The Last of Us: Part III and whether that will be a thing or not."

Druckmann didn't have anything to announce, but said Naughty Dog gets to decide which games it makes. And just because The Last of Us is a successful franchise, that doesn't mean it will keep making more Last of Us games. After all, Naughty Dog has said it is done with the Uncharted series, despite that franchise's massive commercial success.

"All I could say is, at Naughty Dog we're very, very privileged that our publisher is Sony--which means Sony funds our games, supports us, and we're owned by Sony. They have supported us every step of the way to follow our passions--meaning that just because something is successful, people think there's all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That's not the case," Druckmann said. "For us, Uncharted was insanely successful--Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games--and we're able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we're done. We're moving on."

Similarly, Naughty Dog could walk away from The Last of Us franchise and pursue other projects, like potentially its rumored new IP. But Naughty Dog would make another mainline Last of Us game if it had a compelling enough story behind it, Druckmann said.

"It's up to us whether we want to continue [The Last of Us] or not. Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love--just like the first and second game did--then we will tell that story," he said. "If we can't come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end."

Just because Naughty Dog has no plans to make another Uncharted game and has the opportunity to walk away from The Last of Us, both franchises could continue with external developers. In the case of Uncharted, Naughty Dog has said it's open to the idea of an outside studio making Uncharted 5.

For now, fans can look forward to new episodes of HBO's The Last of Us series every Sunday night until Season 1 wraps up on March 12. As for the Last of Us multiplayer game, more details are expected to come this year.

Naughty Dog might not want to make part 3 but if Sony wants to since they own the IP they can eaisly have another company do it.

thats how Arkham origins was made.

WB owns the IP so they just had another company make it if Rocksteady didint want to.

I loved part 2 and seeing that it ended on a cliffhanger, part 3 is definitely going to be made.

edit: cliffhanger was the wrong word to use. Perhaps open-ended would be more appropriate.

@thecupidstunts: Ellie leaving to find Dina leaves the audience in quite a bit of suspense, in my opinion. Right there is an entire journey she will have to overcome to get back to her family.

Then you also have Abby and Levs journey as well, but that may not count since they aren't the main protagonist.

@taylorspace: "Ellie leaving to find Dina leaves the audience in quite a bit of suspense, in my opinion".

She's just heading back to Jackson County, I didn't think there was any question as to where Dina went. I suppose they could have Ellie working her way back to Jackson, but that would just be rote. And Ellie's arc was complete IMO, she learned the consequences of revenge, and the importance of learning to let go.

As far as Abby and Lev, I feel like if anything, it could be a smaller more self contained side story. But I don't feel like there was any cliffhanger there either.

I completely respect your opinion, we just see it in different ways, (possibly because we were looking to get different things out of it). 🙂

@thecupidstunts: Maybe cliffhanger wasn't the correct term to use. I totally see your point as well. I think it is definitely open to interpretation of how the rest of her story can play out, and that it very much could also be a closed story.

I think that with this type of setting and story being told, I am just expecting something to continue, just as the ending of part 1 had the same effect; They could have left it there, but as a viewer, I was desperate to find out about Ellie finding out the truth. I'm not incredibly starved for more content at this point, but I would feel more comfortable with the story ending on a reunion, whether happy or not, just to have some closure would satisfy me.

Any TLOU content I will be happy with though to be honest. The writing in this world is addicting to consume.

@taylorspace: I definitely get what you're saying here, and agree with a lot of it.

Now that I think about, I think the first game actually seemed like a bit of a cliffhanger for me. There was really no doubt in my mind that there would be a 2nd game, and that last conversation between her and Joel at the end of the game just had me going, "She's definitely going to find out what happened, and it's definitely going to be super bad when she does". I was all but tearing my hair out for the wait to see how that was going to play out. And man oh man, did it ever.

Done with Uncharted? Good! Uncharted 4 was a magnificent end for the franchise. There is no need to cheapen it by going on and on, drifting further away from what made the franchise great in the first place. There's absolutely no shame is just letting it go for a console generation or two...or longer. Or indefinitely. Let it be perfect forever.

@downhuman: I want to disagree, because I want more Uncharted, but you’re right. It was the perfect ending. Lost Legacy, while a technically solid game, wasn’t nearly as good, because the story and characters just weren’t interesting enough.

I can see ND moving on from Uncharted, not that this series is bad, but every developer chases what is new and most profitable. They can sale off the IP and move on.

As for tLoU, they added way to much over arching plotlines in 2, screaming tons of foreshadowing for part 3. A evolution arc or redemption arc, of that world. The story of 2 had to have been written with a clear part 3 in mind. So ND will for sure go on to make part 3.

But I sadly feel ND may want to branch out into ... live service games, and other high profit low risk publishing. They have been in this industry for a long time, a lot of them may just want to move off into other directions, as a good few have.

Wow.

What a way to destroy a popular IP.

Kill off a popular main lead after a deceptive advertising campaign for the game and then character assassinate the other, then flip it to a multiplayer only game, and then call it a day.

Way to go Druckmann. I don't know which of Naughty Dog's competitors you're working for, but you should ask for a raise.

I sincerely hope The Last of Us gets at least one more chapter. I was not a fan of how Part 2 ended. The series could have ended after Part 1, that felt complete, but Ellie's journey does not feel over in Part 2.

@rizenstrom: Dude, they will shove Abby down your throat if they ever make Part 3. So better they won't make another game, or a possibility could be that they don't focus on Dumb and Dumber (Ellie and Abby) and create a new story.

@daidochus: Ellie's story doesn't have to involve Abby again, they could just let that go as something that didn't go over well and continue with just Ellie. Also we don't need to play as Ellie to finish her story. We didn't play as her to start it.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Of all the things that naughty dog did right in this game, the ending wasn’t one of them in my opinion. After Ellie’s second try at revenge, she travels to California, massacred an army of slavers, finds Abby, fights her, loses again, get her finger severed and goes back home to play guitar and sing Pearl Jam… this time without a family.

To call it a strong ending… it was anti climactic in my opinion.

@elviejomanti: Pretty sure the ending was just about perfect for illustrating the uselessness, hollowness and meaninglessness of devoting yourself to vengeance and only finally realizing that fact at the last second after having left a path of destruction, pain and waste in your wake.

@elviejomanti: "loses again".

Huh? Ellie was choking Abby out and drowning her. Abby was seconds away from death. The only reason Abby didn't die is because Ellie decided to not kill her.

@elviejomanti: The ending was indeed trash... but I recall Ellie winning the fight (in fact, she dominated Abby) and the game forces you to not kill Abby. Abby didn't win (she did bite off two of Ellie's fingers), she was "done with revenge" and it was a matter of Ellie coming to the decision of whether the continuation of bloodshed was worth it or not. The shitty part is, the decision was removed from the players hands.

The game should've had two endings. 1. The one we received which is a stupid ambiguous ending. 2. She gives Abby the death she deserves and leaves content and satisfied knowing she honored Joel. Family or no family.

@zerojuice: "gives Abby the death she deserves and leaves content and satisfied knowing she honored Joel."

Killing Abby wouldn't have honored Joel, that was the entire point of her not killing Abby. And if Abby deserved to die, so did Ellie.
