NBA 2K10 Hands-On

We got a first look at NBA 2K10 and checked out the promising new My Player mode.

The NBA 2K series has added plenty of new game features and modes over the last few years, including live rosters, blacktop street basketball, and an updated Association mode where you get to manage an NBA franchise. One of the biggest new features in NBA 2K10 is the My Player mode, and we got a chance to make a name for ourselves when we recently took a look at it.

Instead of controlling a whole team, My Player is similar to FIFA's Be a Pro and Madden's Superstar modes in that it focuses on an individual player. My Player lets you take an up-and-coming player and set him on the path to a professional basketball career. However, before you can take to the dazzling lights of an NBA stadium, you need to prove to an NBA franchise that you're worthy of being a benchwarmer, let alone a starting player. The mode starts out on the summer circuit, and your first major goal is to get an invite to an NBA training camp.

When you begin the My Player mode, you get to build a new character from scratch with the ability to change a slew of attributes, including your player's position, play style, jersey number, name, age, and college. You can also drill down into submenus to customise his body type, hair, and facial features; add tattoos and accessories; and change his animation styles. Finally, you can spend skill points that you've earned during games to customise skills, such as dunks, free throws, and 3-pointers. It costs less to spend points on the core attributes for your play style, so if you're a power forward, for example, it'd be wise to spend points on your inside shot skill rather than 3-pointers. It's also worth nothing that if you downloaded the NBA 2K10 Draft Combine game for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, you can import your created player directly into the My Player mode and continue your player's career.

Naturally, your stats won't be very good starting out. You won't sprint very fast--even when using turbo--and your aiming won't be as precise as a pro, so you need to choose your shots carefully if you hope to earn a good average. Before you can get an invitation to an NBA training camp, you need to play some summer matches and convince a coach that you make the grade. Reaching in-game goals, such as scoring at least 51 percent of your shots, limiting your matched player to a maximum of two baskets, or finishing the game with a strong teammate grade will mean you progress more quickly. You can improve your grade by staying on your man, scoring, and executing good passes. Conversely, you will be negatively affected if you leave your assigned player, allow him to score, commit fouls, or call for the ball excessively, for instance. You can also practice drills and improve your skills when not playing games, and if your player isn't good enough to join an NBA team roster at the end of the summer, you can continue on in the NBA D-League to try again later. The My Player mode looks like it will make a great addition to the other main game modes, which include seasons, a rookie challenge, situations, playoffs, and street basketball.

While the controls feel responsive, free throws are still a bit difficult to perform. Nailing the precise timing takes plenty of practice, but if your free throws really stink, you can take to the practice mode to work on them. You can also work on your game through practice matches and rehearse plays, such as pick-and-rolls and give-and-gos. We've had issues with NBA 2K's blatant product placement before, and it looks like things haven't changed. These include T-mobile's starting lineups, Sprite's "ice cold keys to the game" pregame analysis, and Gatorade's "moment of the match" replays.

Have the Lakers got what it takes to win the 2010 finals?
Have the Lakers got what it takes to win the 2010 finals?

NBA 2K looks great again this year--including the players, crowds, and stadiums--and shows a great level of attention to detail from the development team. Basketball fans won't have to wait long to get their hands on NBA 2K10, with the game due to be released on October 6 in the US and October 9 in Europe.

@CMaka I second that motion ha-ha pay me 2k, at least give me some ms points for shipping out with some bugs. While I haven't noticed all the bugs being mentioned here and else where, the ones I've seen (including 2k online being busted) is similar to the problems they had before with 2k9. That's no excuses, but this is a game that is a yearly release, so i expect to see something slip because within 12 months, you gotta release a new game with new player animations, models, graphics, sounds, etc. So why not take a minute to think about what's perfect or right in the game, before blowing your lid on the handful of flaws.

I think 2k should be paying us for being game testers. With all the issues the game has, it's like they're waiting for some out cries of specific problems so they can patch it up. The game is far from broke though, at least for me it isn't. I'm still having fun trying to bring my combine player up from the D-League. I'll try out some other modes to find what issues the rest of the game got.

yo that game is so full of glitches it make ncaa 2010 and madden 10 look like masterpieces. it was pretty evident that the game was not ready to be released. its nba 2k10 beta. i might have to contact 2k and tell them to take that garbage of the shelves of gametop. i hate the fact that 2k7 and 2k8 was so epic and perfect.

I could just imagine what their football game would have been like, had EA not have bought the rights. lol I wonder would madden even exist now, no offense to madden fans. I think EA thought long and hard on how not to loose their football franchise. (And making it better than 2ks FB series wasnt in the plans, I mean they wouldnt go head to head) Now look at Madden 10 its still madden with a taste of 2k presentation, o O now players are on the phone talking while on the sideline.(Stolen legacy) 2k10 basket ball series is a little better than the last one. O wait I heard EA hired the Original Designer of NBA 2k!

I seriously don't know why people complain about the freethrow system in 2k, including people from Gamespot. If you've had any experience with basketball, you know that freethrows aren't actually free, they shouldn't be too easy that people make every freethrow with shaq or something. I think the system in 2k is just fine, if you play with one team a lot, you'll start to think the freethrows are actually pretty easy.

i'm comfortable with the so-called "difficult" free throws...because i think the difficulty in 2K9 was just right...and everything else is very good in my opinion. btw i'm talking about the PC version, and also it'd be really cool if the new one would be a little bit more optimised on the CPU with the cloth physics etc. still not complaining though : ))))

@Machizm0 Are you serious? Tell me one thing realistic in 2K9 besides the animations. The majority of the people online don't know how to play (correct) and the stupid game rewards them for it. All everyone does on defense is press the steal button and double team, yet while I take my time and get the ball inside, I can't make a damn lay up. The game takes no skill to play and usually punishes the people who have skills. I'll take the fakeness of NBA Street anyday over the pathetic gameplay of 2K basketball. The only reason people like this game is because they need a basketball fix (like me) and they rather play this than Live.

I wasn't very encouraged after he Said "free throws are still a bit difficult". It sounds like there are still some nagging issues they haven't fixed.

I might have passed on basketball game this year but this new mode is just what i would want for something new and it will keep the game and sport fresh. September can't end fast enough. This month has dragged without much to get excited about.

most likely if you don't like any of the 2k basketball games or you find it too difficult to play, then you should probably be playing that old basic stuff like NBA street vol 1 or something

i'm starting to notice that when i read stuff about this game all i'm seeing is how great the features are and stuff. as opposed to live 10 where the gameplay seems to be the major selling point, and personally i'm big on gameplay. and for the record, both games sucked last year.

@winrehs_007 I tried that awhile ago, same results. I guess I'll try it again. Also, I shouldn't have to adjust the game to make it play like its suppose to. Its not like I play with horrible players/teams.

@Simple- Well NBA Street is actually my favorite game. 2K9 is so bad because of the consistently missed layups, consistently stupid defense, and everything else you can name. So yeah, I guess I'm a loser for finding a horrible basketball game frustrating. Here's hope that 2K10 will at least be playable. The My Player mode sounds promising.
