Update:

2K Games has restored online functionality to the game for another nine months.

Original story follows:

A scheduled server switch-off for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions of NBA 2K14 has wiped players' save files because they required online synchronisation.

Despite publisher 2K Games previously assuring fans that save files would survive the transition, players began to notice in early April that their career mode data was no longer accessible.

2K Games did not warn players that their save files would be deleted, and has only confirmed the issue via responses to emails.

One such message, obtained by Polygon, explains that those who still play the basketball sim will need to restart their career mode if they wish to continue playing.

A 2K Support representative wrote: "This means that if you had created a MyCareer or a MyGM online save file that was once connected to our servers it too sadly has retired and is no longer available for use and it would be necessary to re-create these files as offline saves."

Players who have poured hours of time into the game have expressed their disappointment at the decision.

On Twitter, one player exclaimed: "Was 1/3 into my tenth and final season of NBA 2K14 career mode and you shut down the servers for good? Thanks a lot, 2K, I'm done with you!"

Another wrote: "Hard to believe a game that is 1.5 years old is useless already. Can't access my season now. Awful way to treat your customers."

Freelance games journalist Chris Scullion suggested on his blog that a bond of trust has been broken. He wrote: "Just like that, 2K Sports has ended my 73-hour single player career by killing its online servers."

GameSpot has contacted 2K to discuss whether the game's successor, NBA 2K15, will also implement the same save file deletion should its servers ever be switched off.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game are not affected.

The support message continues: "Sadly this may come as an inconvenience to some of you and if so we truly do understand and can feel for how upsetting this may seem as there always is a special bond that occurs between a player and their MyCareer save but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top!"

almost all games nowadays get there servers shut down almost immediately after the next version of said game comes out, its not to inconvenience players its cause it makes no sense to keep paying to keep servers alive only so afew hundred people can keep playing, its time to go buy 2k15, when 2k16 comes out it ill be the same effect most game nowadays only have a year or two lifespan so i dont know why so many people are shocked at this lol

So you basically are paying $60 for a game that will lose half it's content (multiplayer) after just one year, and also wipe out your progress in the other half; effectively leaving the game almost unusable. That's utter BS. People should not tolerate this, don't buy the next 2K NBA game if you want to let them know your thoughts about this BS. I can still play Red Dead Redemption multiplayer and that's a 2009 game, they should learn from other devs.

Wow, 2K's reaction is quite impressive. So they've lied to their fans and now they just don't give a f*** even though they know how messed up this situation is.

That's how you ruin your reputation but it seems like they're not too worried about people still buying their games. Which they'll do anyway, but usually publishers pretend like it wasn't so.

So how was this possible in the first place? Was this game mode only playable with an online connection in the first place or were the offline saves deleted by "syncing" with the servers?

<< LINK REMOVED >> You know why 2K doesn't care? Because the alternate is NBA Live. Easier to screw over your customers when their only other option is worse than what 2K just did.

This is the reason why Cable companies still exist. Price too high? Go get satellite and have fun not having tv when it rains.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sorry, my point was lost in translation. I was trying to point out that companies don't feel as bad about screwing ppl over if their competitors are worse off than the company committing the grievant act.

2K doesn't care because they know ppl rather buy 2K over Live even if something like this will happen. Ppl complain but ultimately have no power whatsoever to change anything because you're stuck w/ Live if you don't like 2K's practices.

Cable companies charge exorbitant prices knowing the only alternative is satellite and certain neighborhoods block ppl from getting satellite tv. I was just trying to make a parallel example to what 2K did where other companies commit similar acts.

It's unfortunately one of the ugly sides of Capitalism where you have no rights and you have to simply accept it since there is no reason for that company to change whatsoever if their place in the market is secure no matter what they do.

Stop acting like an addict who's being controlled by the industry, then you can actually decide to not support such behavior. That's how capitalism works and honestly the side you chose is pretty sad.

I will make sure I no longer buy games that require online saves. This is insane. I no longer buy MP only games because of the shelf life on consoles is pretty small. I caved and got Titanfall on 360 for $7.49 which included all DLC. But from now on, no games which REQUIRE online connection to operate. On Steam, these games will continue to operate as long as there are at least couple of players, but on consoles, the support seems to die fairly quickly as companies switch focus somewhere else.

this is shocking and appalling! i can't believe they did this to their customers. And their support message blows my mind on so many levels. This is the first generation that's actually taken a step back rather than forward! Cloud gaming and saves in the cloud has had almost no positive affects on gaming for the users. I see more and more friends abandoning consoles and I feel it's the game developers eroding their own bussiness with practices like this meant to make them more money, but why can't they see its so counter intuitive. fk 2k

Ye Gods. I don't even play the game or like basketball and that last part made me want to break something. Shocking arrogance, of a sort we seem to be increasingly seeing in this generation of gaming. It's starting to feel like the whole industry is run by Ferengi.

EA did this with MAdden games, shut down servers when the new versions came out. Not sure if they still do it, but yeah, its bullsht, especially if the newer version isnt as good as the previous one.

and he also didn't notice the game is not digital, the physical copy got its saves erased too.

This is the future of anything cloud-related, including gaming. Every dollar spent on cloud products goes towards those companies making fun of you when they close the servers down.

Wow, I don't really play any sports games but this line sounds downright offensive even to me:

"but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top!"

What? Seriously? "All good things must come to an end"? No... Just no... Someone's single player game should not have to come to an end because some server somewhere got turned off. And then to write it off like this is just one of those inevitable things in life is absolutely appalling.

I'd say I'm surprised but I'm really not. Every year I say "That's it! No more 2K products!". This year I really really doubly really mean it.

I'll give myself a stern talking to if I break my own self imposed embargo. It's easy not to buy EA products, the hate runs deep.

Absolutely unbelievable. The last NBA 2K i bought and still play is 13, but honestly, i been done buying sports games. I still play Madden 9 and 10, FIFA 12, NHL 13, MLB The Show 13 etc. I'll never buy the new stuff given everything that's going on.

I think that the sports game business is a huge racket. They charge you 60 bucks for roughly the same exact game every year (roster and uniform changes, and little bits of happy horse sh** as a selling point), and people fall for it, and get bilked.

They shut down servers a year after the new game comes out (can you imagine them doing that with BF or COD?). Look i can't understand why people fall for this racket every year. To make it worse, Next Gen seems to be the ones getting creamed even more than last gen.

What is the incentive to move to Next Gen? They won't make anymore games for last gen? Sounds good to me, being they all suck. I'll stick with my 360 and PS3, and take advantage of the great sales and deals on games that are 10 times better than this racket..

<< LINK REMOVED >> As someone who's relatively new to the series, I was happy with all the changes that were done in 2K15 comparative to 2K14. For the PC, it was a major graphical leap. The way the game controls and plays seems to be different... I'm not sure what it is but it feels different.

The MyCareer mode was beefed up considerably with cut scenes which to me is an amazing addition even if the voice acting is awful a lot of times. It's great to have that context there. It's neat to see the interaction between you and your agent, your team mates, other players, and celebrities/endorsement people. You're given training cut scenes every once and awhile where you watch film of plays and your coach points out strategies, you're given 5v5 practice sessions within your team and your coach reacts to the performance... it's really cool compared to last year's which was a lot more bare bones by comparison. The only thing I miss was being able to walk into the GM's office to talk... for some reason they seem to have taken that out. I dunno... to me that's a lot.

Well if i was on PC, you would not hear complaining from me. I mean PC gamers have it all. They can "mod" things, they can be playing games years and years old, and still get current rosters, changes etc, given what goes on over there (and certainly not just with sports games, if i had the ARMA Mods for WW2 i'd never get off it).

However, as far as consoles, i'm sorry, but i feel games have reached their peak. If you feel blowing 60 bucks for a roster, or a "chat with an agent", or the shadows look better etc, then fine, but i can't figure it out.

Maybe it's "age" for me, that in getting older, i may know a bit better what it is to get screwed, and younger people seem to want all the newest stuff, but i think its a huge waste of money, and in cases like this, its just inexcusable.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It's not like the console versions didn't get all of those changes. Nothing I spoke about had anything to do with mods. The only hitch was that 2K14 technically got the graphics overhaul for consoles because it was re-released for the new generation of consoles.

I did mod 2K14 though... I think there was some arena lighting mod or something that made the reflections off of the court floor look better, and I replaced the music that came with the game. I wouldn't dare put myself through the ordeal of finding new music to replace for 2K15 as I generally don't like rap/hip-hop so I end up wasting hours on Youtube trying to find something I like. There's not nearly enough out there quite like Fort Minor's All Night or Doap Nixon's The Wait is Over. The lyrical content is wrong for the game but the beats... awesome.

But yeah, I think Tecmo Bowl on the NES is still getting modded with roster updates. Same thing with NHL '93 I think.

As i said, if i were on PC, it's a whole different argument from my perspective, and so i just can't comment on that. 13 is good enough for me. The commentary, graphics, presentation, gameplay, control settings etc is just fine.

The problem is rosters, and team changes and uniforms, for which on a PC, those problems most likely don't exist given what you can do, which is my point. There's a reason they shut down the servers, and alot of it has to do with forcing people into the next game, and i'm just not falling for it.
