NBA's Meyers Leonard Suspended After Using Antisemitic Slur On Warzone Twitch Stream

Leonard has been fined $50,000 and will be suspended for one week.

Content Warning: use of hate speech, antisemitism, explicit language.

Miami Heat center Meyers Leonard has been suspended and fined following his use of an antisemitic slur during a Call of Duty: Warzone stream on his Twitch channel earlier this week. He's also now been suspended from Twitch. This comes after he was already forced to take an indefinite leave of absence from the Heat and was cut from the esports organization FaZe Clan.

According to NBA reporter Shams Charania, Leonard will be fined $50,000 (from a salary of over $9 million this season) and suspended from "all Heat facilities and team activities" for one week. Additionally, he'll have to take part in a cultural diversity program. However, according to ESPN, he won't forfeit any pay for the games he misses due to the suspension because he is currently injured, having been ruled out for the season with a shoulder issue earlier this year. Were that not the case, Leonard could have lost out on an additional $324,000.

As reported by Defector, Leonard was streaming Warzone on Monday, and he began complaining about a player trying to snipe him. In an outburst, Leonard called them a "k*** b****." You can see the incident in the uncensored video clip below:

Leonard said the slur on a Monday stream, but it took some time before his comments began to make the rounds. During a subsequent Warzone stream, viewers in the chat questioned his use of the word before the chat devolved into an "emote-only mode." He then got a call from his wife and cut the stream short.

"We just became aware of the video and are in the process of gathering more information," an NBA spokesperson said on Tuesday. "The NBA unequivocally condemns all forms of hate speech."

Leonard has been dropped from FaZe Clan, the popular esports organization the NBA player joined in June 2019. According to a statement from FaZe, the company doesn't "tolerate hate speech or discriminatory language of any kind." The organization noted that while Leonard isn't a "member of FaZe," it is "cutting ties with him" effective immediately.

Following FaZe Clan's statement, Leonard released one of his own, which you can read below:

The Heat also issued a statement in which it condemned Leonard's language, saying it "will not tolerate hateful language from anyone associated with our franchise." It added that Leonard "will be away from the team indefinitely" and that the team will cooperate with the NBA's investigation, which has now led to the suspension and fine.

As a jew, I can assure you he didn't know what "k***" means. He's probably not an anti-semite, just anti-smart.

Everyone can say something stupid, especially in those kind of moments. A clap on the back of the head, a warning, and moving on...

Only the perpetuation of the stupidity is the problem. He recognize his mistake, and that should be praised, not punished.

Yeah, I don't buy that he didn't know what the term meant. I also don't buy that people randomly blurt out racial slurs when something bad/unexpected happens. Does this mean that Meyers is racist/anti-semetic? Up in the air.

If you're finding yourself defending the use of this "k-word", then seriously, check your sh-t, learn to do a bit of introspection and maybe get a therapist, because you're off the goddamn wall, way off the reservation and you've become nothing but a mindless reactionary sponge who's soaked up waaaaay too much alt-right reactionary propaganda.

I really don't know what he said, I heard "kite" and then the word that means female dog. Isn't kiting a tactic used in video games to run around shooting projectiles and baiting someone to chase you??

Meanwhile the "N" word is still easily thrown around by black people (I'm black) without this type of energy being directed towards it.

@esqueejy: I understand the anonymity of the internet and its widespread accessibility allows any idiot to Google a few words to sound witty and intelligent, but you've got to try harder, man.

You know what? My family members that are at least in their 60s don't play that "own the word to take its power" BS, especially here in the south where I'm from. They will tell you quick to not ever use that word around them. And its more than just the word - the black (mostly negative) stereotype is paraded all throughout media with no problem. Jay Z references a POSITIVE stereotype about Jewish people in a song and this man is forced to apologize and bow down.

FOH.

@ClericIdola: Ah, so you've got a chip on your shoulder about Jay-Z being told to apologize about some reference he made in a song about Jewish people so the whataboutism over the "n-bomb" has to come out in an attempt to excuse someone else who dropped the single most evil word you can use to refer to Jewish people?

If you want to be consistent, you be saying neither word should be used by anyone.

If you want to pursue some sort of grudge, you'd do what you're doing, which is trying to excuse someone using one word about Group A because you're supposedly mad that other people aren't criticized for using a different word about Group B....then revealing your underlying butthurt driving the irrational doublethink by referring to your anger about Jay-Z also getting criticized for something he said about Group A. You're mad this guy is getting yelled at about Group A because Jay-Z was yelled at about Group A and you thought it was unfair, so eff Group A, right? You papered it over with nonsense about Group B.

@Kr3Yc3K: Seuss did some pretty horrible political cartoons back during the WWII era. A couple of his children's books were also pointed out to contain some pretty obvious stereotypes and taken off some list or another. Faux News has promptly made it their "cancel culture" rallying cry du jour, using Dr. Seuss being "canceled" to rile their angry target audience towards more widespread violence. The other 80% of the Faux News website lately has been all about Harry and Meghan, because the second Prince Ginger married a black girl, Faux News started tapping into that as a symbolic way of tweaking the white nationalist GQP base who, if you look at the KKKomment boards on that site are flipping inconsolable that the WASP royal bloodline has now been polluted. Same as them using the Kaepernick thing as a white nationalist proxy battle. It's all about the dogwhistles.

@esqueejy: In that one interview, and biography, - one of his first jobs was cartoons for war propaganda in news papers, and when he carried it over to his own work. Like when I see Chinese people I see yellow people with ..... he was still very young. I mean the cartoons were a sign of the time, war era and common. But later on in years he butted heads against his own publisher who owned much of the Dr Seuss, to make changes in reprints. His story is one of inspiration, that not only can a person grow and change, they can fight to make things better.

@jenovaschilld: That's all well and good, but it wasn't HIM that was "canceled" and it wasn't ALL of his work, just a couple of the books based on their CONTENT....well, and the horrifying political cartoons, but those are arguably more of a teaching moment than the books. You don't just read that crap into a defenseless child's mind. Even Huck Finn is something introduced later in HS when the students are expected to at lest mostly be able to understand historical context and why it contains (I think it is) 219 n-bombs.

@wtf_666: Well if you know anything about Theodor Seuss Geisel he pressed for changes to his Dr Seuess books throughout his career recognizing that many of his ways of addressing other races was racists and simplified countenance of the day. He pushed for his publisher to change new printings so that generations of children would not also see how objectifying people were back then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Seuss

Dr Seuss was introspective, lived a long life and recognized that we grow as a person, as a civilization. https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2019/02/26/695966537/classic-books-are-full-of-problems-why-cant-we-put-them-down Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain works, would be considered very culturally offensive today, and even Twain knew his work was a sign of the times and wanted this known that his work was a reflection not tablets from the mountain. As he was also a champion of changing people views that were considered backward, classist, and racist during his day.

We do and say stupid shit throughout our lives, it does not have to define us, we do not have to defend it, but can learn from it. I grew up in Southern West Virginia coal fields surrounded by racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic family you ever met. But through education, life lessons, and common sense- do not hold the same beliefs that I did at 18. Nor would I want my children to be exposed to the simple minded bigotry of that time and culture. No one needs to hold it as a family crest, we all can change our minds. I mean... I hope.... that WWE wrestling fans that grow from kids, to adults to the grave, still do not believe it is real. Change is good.

@justin01: Well America was very racists to the Irish and Polish during the 18th century with tons of racist terms and beliefs. But people nations change, generations grow, learn, teach and die off. Hopefully so will bigoted terms and beliefs. And future kids will have to watch old episodes of All in the Family as a history lesson to figure out, just what all that was about.

Now you'll hear how sorry he is - oh gosh he's sorry and how he wasn't raised to say such things.... They say these things in the comfort of their homes with their like minded friends, but when they get caught saying it in the open that's suddenly when they're sorry.

Smells just like that Kyle Nascar guy when he got caught using racist language during an online race event and how he was sorry after he got caught. When will these people learn that this is not their world and they can't say what they want when they want.

White men had the whole last century to say all the sick bullshit that they wanted on TV in movies, and on the air and no one batted an eyelash or said anything. But thankfully now it's over and they have to think of the consequences today.

OMG, he said a racial slur. That means that he is a racist and probably a secret nazi too. Might as well make him a Klan/Proud Boy member while we are at it in order to cover all of our bases. My lord, Just stop this nonsense. Anyone who has ever played online games has dealt with some kind of racist, sexual or violent remake from someone before. My friends, all of varying races and religions, do this as well and it doesn't make us racists or bigots.

Should he have said it, especially on a live stream? No, and that's his own goof that he can own up to but he doesn't need to whip himself bloody in the street before he is forgiven.

@redviperofdorne: If this particular word he said is one of your go-to stock swear words for when you're having an infantile outburst, a word that comes out naturally or "accidentally" as an exclamation when you're excited and yelling off the cuff, then yeah, you've got some work to do on un-anti-semiting yourself. This isn't like yelling one of the magic 7 that George Carlin used to rant about or dropping something mildly creative like "clowndick" or whatever. It's a VERY particular word and NOBODY uses it unless they've become accustomed to using it in some fashion. It's one of those words at the top of the list of words with the red lights and alarm bells on it, not some run of the mill cuss word you blurt out, even in the middle of a tantrum. It literally has a price tag on it that says "inexcusable."

@gleencross: No saying it the way he did, and in the context that he did-- yeah that does make you racist.... hell that is the very definition of what makes one racist. Your using a very racist term to verbally insult, degrade, someone (a person) in regards to their actions ... and that made no sense- just his knee jerk go to reaction. That is racism 101. It is not just a 'bad word', there is no such thing as bad words, it is how you use them.

I mistake like this is a chance to learn, grow, and understand. Something people just hate having to do, or recognizing that you/we may need to also.

@jenovaschilld: That's not actually very close to actual racism. Racism would involve biases and beliefs and actions, not words. The brain systems behind swearing actually focus heavily on cultural norms and not personal beliefs and biases, shock value basically, that's why so many people with Tourette's so often use racial slurs, that's where the 'glitch' in their brain often resides, that's why "Goddammit" is so very, very common in the USA and nowhere else as it's a traditionally Christian country. Swearing is a surprisingly complicated facet of psychology and I'd say this is more likely the product of someone who grew up watching South Park than someone who impulsively hates Jews. The primary exception would be if he was playing against someone who he knew to be Jewish and was trying to directly insult them personally, that would indicate probable racism, but even then he might just be a dick and be looking for the word he thinks would hurt that person the most.

Anyway, in the video you can hear him sputter and slow looking for something insulting to say that he probably thinks would be more funny in its absurdity than anything else, and it's almost immediately followed by a shamed trailing off, regretting what he said. That can be interpreted however you want but it seems more like someone who's joke didn't land than someone who impulsively hates.

@Xylymphydyte: Yep. I was about the mention the cultural norms. Every time you swear the word "goddammit" for example, you are blaspheming against the christian and jewish God. That does not make you a racist or religion hater, etc.. It's almost automatic, goddammit became a "bad word" instead of something that denotes hate against a certain religion or culture. This kind of fanaticism against "bad words" is just ridiculous imo, these people wants everyone to become paladins of high morals and justice. Mankind will never reach such state, there is no ideal scenario of what "justice" truly means. Who are you, me or anyone else to give the Final word about the meanings of justice? And everyone else have to agree and follow this ideal of justice no matter what, if they don't, they will be canceled and treated like degenerates. That seems awfully familiar with a certain fanatical ideology practiced by a political party in Germany... accept our ways or die? Interesting approach

@Xylymphydyte: I would like to point out that ... what he felt was a time of need, that golden ring he reached out to, his knee jerk goto slur .... was that. It almost seemed as easily for him to speak it, as if a memorable self soothing prayer, it was so easy. With only the realization after wards .... whoops.

I played FPS and have been called everything in the book. That would be the first time, I would have gotten that one though.

You do not need to look into a person's heart, you do not need to do a family background, a cultural biography of the area, a geographical setting. When someone uses a "pretty harsh" racial slur in that context to insult/ degrade another, regardless of the person he is insulting, yeah that is racist. He wasn't just saying shit, or dumbass, he was firing a focused insult (regardless if he hits the target). If your playing basketball and someone tries to guard you through the hole, and you yell $$$$# - it doesn't matter if the target was of that race, or the action of guarding you was deserved or if your only brain cell goto was the above insult.

I mean, I cannot believe that people lack the empathy or self reflection to call it was it is. An excuse, a denial -"well in the context he used the racial slur as well as it was the second tuesday and the moon was half ..... "- it was just a young dude making a terrible racial slur. Simple as that, but it is a chance to learn and grow, not deny it.

@Xylymphydyte: Something the reactionary crowd is going to have to start accepting is that overt, consciously hateful and bigoted racism is not the only thing that qualifies as racism. You can be racist as hell and completely and utterly oblivious and un-self-aware of your racism....as apparently most people posting on GS on a given day actually are.

@redviperofdorne: He wouldn't be forgiven anyway. There is no mercy in Cancel Culture, for anything at all. It's why if I'm going to get insulting, I burn as many bridges as possible. Make it completely absurd. Include like 5 or 6 different races, multiple sexualities, genders, what have you. Go nuts.

Okay, he said a bad word. But what did he DO? People are actually, legitimately being HARMED in the world. Like, beatings and murders and rapes. Can we solve all the stuff that leaves people dead, or scarred for life, before we rend our clothing and weep because somebody said a bad word in a videogame????

@bluestorm83: Or in other words, let me be as bigoted as I want, use as much racist/sexist/homophobic language as I want because there's hunger in Africa. There's nothing I could say that's worse than that, right? Who cares if I other people based on their physical attributes, ethnic background, or sexual orientation and make them feel unwelcome and hated.

But if you prevent me from saying these things, you are the bad guy. That's what you're saying right now.

What an idiot. Now we'll hear about how he just slipped. Racial slurs aren't an accident. If you say them it's because you've always said them and you think that way at a subconscious level. If you say a racial slur it's because you're a racist. Nothing more, nothing less.

@jeremyalexander: I don't think that's true. I've had a korean friend call me honky, cracker, white devil, it's all just been for shits and giggles. He's not a racist, I love the guy.

Yeah Because you and your buddy are cool with each other... Would you feel the same way if it was a stranger off the street? Me personally, Racial shit like that is nothing new. Never bothered me... I'd either say something back or pop them in the mouth... The way it should be handled, if someone wants to run their mouth.

I know where your coming from though, My best friend is Black, and we make racial jokes about each others race all the time... Because we've known each other for nearly 20 years, so we know each other is just F'N around.

My big thing is that you hear all the "White jokes" (some of the ones you mentioned above) and yet, no one give a F in the media, television shows or movies (including MOST whites) I heard something on the News a few weeks ago, that some celebrity posted on their instagram, something negative about White people, and yet that didn't stop the converge of the celebrity, what they said, or the News reporters laughing about it... Put the shoe on one of the other foots, and i bet that shit wouldn't have even been said, reported on, or laughed about. (especially without some sort of punishment to the reporters and/or celebrity, by way of fan or viewer backlash)

but, Lord forgive anyone that brings up something racily negative (joke or not) against a Black/Hispanic/Asian ECT...

We would just be hearing about how "insensitive" it was, and how the "hatred" has to stop.

All I'm saying is, If you can't take the shit... You shouldn't be dishin' it.
