NBC Won't Air 2022 Golden Globes, Tom Cruise Returns Awards

The backlash against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has now led to NBC canceling its plans to air the 2022 Golden Globe Awards.

Update: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has responded to the news of NBC canceling the 2022 telecast of the Golden Globe Awards. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the HFPA said, "Regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes, implementing transformational changes as quickly--and as thoughtfully--as possible remains the top priority for our organization. We invite our partners in the industry to the table to work with us on the systemic reform that is long overdue, both in our organization as well as within the industry at large." The group also revealed several of the changes it plans to make in the coming months, which you can read on THR. The original story follows.

NBC has officially made the decision to not air the Golden Globe Awards in 2022. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network made the choice after a severe backlash in recent months against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes on the annual awards for movies and TV.

In a statement, NBC said, "We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023."

The network dropping the telecast comes as the HFPA faces criticism for a lack of diversity in its membership. It was revealed in February by the LA Times that there were no black members of the organization, which consisted of 87 journalists. Following that, the HFPA announced potential reforms to its laws and memberships included adding "at least 20 new members in 2021, with a specific focus on recruiting Black members." The group also set a goal of increasing its membership by 50% over the next 18 months. Other changes proposed by the HFPA were eliminating the requirement that members reside in Southern California and that new members must be sponsored by those already in the group.

As for the backlash against the HFPA, it spreads far beyond NBC's dropping the show. According to Deadline, Mission Impossible franchise star Tom Cruise has sent the three Golden Globes he's won back to the organization in protest. Meanwhile, Netflix announced it would be "stopping any activities with [the HFPA] until more meaningful changes are made." Likewise, Amazon announced it wasn't dealing with the organization currently. "We have not been working with the HFPA since these issues were first raised, and like the rest of the industry, we are awaiting a sincere and significant resolution before moving forward," a statement from Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke read.

As for what happens next, it remains unclear if the Golden Globes would be picked up by another network or streaming entity in 2021.

@bruta: I dunno, challenging an organization that has precisely zero black members doesn't seem like wokeness going crazy, it seems pretty legit.

So rich Hollywood is yelling at rich media for not being progressive and "diverse" enough regarding their selections in the "rich and famous" awards...

This isn't about diversity. Its about coming out on top of a progressiveness pyramid scheme. Its basically the vacillating idea that "everyone is equal" while simultaneously demanding "special treatment". The woke, progressive media fed juggernaut has gotten so ridiculously massive and so ravenous that it now consumes everything in it's path - much like a cancer.

Meanwhile the vast majority of us people of color watch this circus and laugh...because its almost ALL white people. They are scrambling to the top of a rotting pile they they created with their own bodies.

Meanwhile I had to fill out a form the other day in Spanish and NOWHERE on that form was a checkbox for race. Strange. Probably because, in MY culture, race is irrelevant - its seen as a fact of life. Not a value.

@cj_topspin: My POC friends don't agree - they think it will take white people pushing for change for change to actually happen, because when POC push for change, it's seen as obnoxious or self-serving.

I don't think the association is intentionally keeping black people out, it's probably unconscious, and special effort is required to undo the unconscious effects that lead to an institution accidentally having zero black people.

And they also push back on the idea that "not seeing color" is the end goal, since it completely ignores the legacy of race in this country that they deal with constantly.

They obviously don't speak for all POC, but their perspective is, in my experience, more common than yours, which sounds more like what I hear white people say they would think if they were a black person.

@megagood2345: well, you see color so much you use segregationist language. It's so odd that your argument includes phantom bigots that take over for us when we go to sleep. I had no idea that my Tyler Durden was a race nationalist. Have you considered that trying to combat assumed unconscious bias may actually create conscious bias? There are zero trans or Pacific Islander staff in the president's cabinet. Is this due to super-secret dreamtime bigotry?

@megagood2345: That right there is the problem. "POC". I am considered a "person of color" but I have nothing in common with all the other "persons of color"...yet, there we go again. Lumping us in to the same label for convenience. My personal experience is vastly different than a Black person's experience, an Asian person's experience, and Indian's experience, etc. Yet some how we are all lumped into the same ridiculous "POC" basket when we are as different from each other as a fish is from a dog.

I miss the days when I didn't have to worry about the color of my skin and whether or not being brown vs white mattered.

@cj_topspin: Yep it's a ridiculous term created by progressives. It implies that you all have some mysterious bond because you have melanin in your skin.

It's actually an easy way for liberals to manipulate you and create a simple us vs them approach which unfortunately seems to work as most minorities vote Democrat.

Something isn't going right in your life? It isn't your fault It's the systems and that system was created by white people so all " POC"'s Unite and let's fix the system.

Lol..

I have mixed feelings on this but try to keep a level head approach.

On one hand, I feel like skill should be the main factor in hiring but its quite possible that skill was overlooked in favor of skin color in the past which lead to the current result.

On the other hand, when you think long term, by "forcing" or "injecting" minorities into the various careers, you might deal with short term losses (Sometimes stuck with someone not as competent as who you really wanted, but couldnt hire) but long term, it means these people are in positions to earn good wages, move out of the "hoods" and into suburbs. It leads to exposure, it leads to better education for their kids and it leads to a more diverse and exposed society.

Its hard to fight racism with a town full of white folks who never lived next to a black person. And if you dont give good jobs to minorities, you cant expect for them to move up in the white neighborhoods. And yes, I 100% expect that black folks who live in those more poor areas are racist towards white folks, but that, also will dissipate over time as they move out from that "gang" and start enjoying success and start co-living with white people.

We already made great progress in many regions of Canada this way and when I look at how things are in the states, its no wonder there are so many issues. Its really flagrant from an outsider point of view. It feels like a good large chunk of the US has stopped evolution like 50 years + ago.

Most of those complaining about "they are stealing our jobs" are the lazy losers loud mouths who want everything spoonfed to them and who cant take accountability for their own failures. Not many successful white folks who think this way because they put in the work to get where they belong.

You can do better.

Lol this is hilarious to me. Watching a Ultra woke group of white liberals get ate alive by their own. Not sure when white guilt liberals will realize the fact it doesn't matter how woke and progressive you are... you're still white and they hate you.

@yessir: Most of the far left. You have self hating white people who can't stop virtue signaling to their " Friends " of color how woke they are. When in reality their friends of color hate them just for being who they are.

@silentchief: As far as I can tell, there's no way for me to be an ally to my POC friends and colleagues without a segment of people calling me woke or virtue signalling. I hope at some point those folks stop being defensive and dismissive of my efforts, and start engaging deeply with these issues. It's tough and uncomfortable, but it feels better. I don't hate white people, but I do feel embarrassed by the people who have a temper tantrum whenever they are asked to spend a few minutes engaging with issues that black people live with constantly.

@megagood2345: You don't need to be an ally you're not in a war for christ sake. Most black and brown people go through the same thing everyone else goes through. They are just normal people not victims. Stop taking extreme situations and acting like it's the norm... it isnt.

@yessir: Diversity is fine and dandy. Forced diversity is what everyone should be against, as it is inherently discrimination.

@deactivated-609b1cfe23050: What is the merit of diversity? Serious question. Should I be allowed "participation" based on the color of my skin or based on my ability? In which industries? Should we start affirmative action in College again? What about College sports? What about professional sports?

If you wish to start a quota system based on race (because that is essentially what we are talking about here, let's not kid ourselves) then we need to equally apply it across the board to ALL U.S. institutions - both government and business.

Diversity is not a potluck menu - you can't pick and choose where you want your diversity. It's all or nothing. And, by its very nature, expect the dilution of talent, quality and production. Because, as I can attest to, "being Hispanic" doesn't make me a better accountant, chef or soldier.

Reality doesn't work that way.

@yessir: I mean, I thought I put it simply enough that a 5 year old could understand, but here you are either ignoring what I said or trying to distort it in a deceptive way.

Natural diversity is good. That is diversity that happens without forcing it. Hire the best people and naturally, you will get people from different groups.

Forced diversity is discrimination as you are implementing a policy of deliberate favoritism. That's systemic.

Stop trying to make diversity happen and just let it happen.

Conversely, efforts to prevent natural diversity are equally descrimination and everyone should be against that.

The only forced diversity should be of skillsets where you have different roles that need filled, or if you have a specific need for someone with specialized experience or understanding of another culture - like if you are working with people from other parts of the world and need to understand their customs better.

You get diversity by not preventing it, but not by forcing it.

@zelda37:  You can’t get diversity while actively trying to prevent it or by not trying to fix issues that make it impossible. You can’t get non white people in while they are so disadvantaged they can’t get ahead. Simple:

@yessir: facepalm yourself.

I EXPLICITLY said it was wrong to actively prevent it.

Are you purposefully not reading? Are you just dishonest?

You sir advocate discrimination.

You absolutely do NOT have to discriminate to have diversity. You just treat people fairly. Discrimination that you advocate is not fairly.

@yessir: An active policy of discrimination is not fixing barriers, it's just discrimination and new barriers.

Remove barriers? Great.

Discrimnate? Bad.

Just get the best people, stop worrying about labels and natural diversity will occur.

All these awards shows are for advertising and self-congratulations for the movie/TV industry. Have never watched them and don't know why anyone does. I knew the Oscars were corrupt and elitist when Annie Hall beat Star Wars in 1977.

Stupid woke culture poisons everthing it touches. Who cares if they're white, black, yellow, or purple? Hire based on aptitude and who's best for the job. If that's a black person, awesome! But to cancel it to appease the woke crowd and hire some token blacks is ridiculous.

Hilarious. They insist on hiring on the basis of skin colour/race instead or merit. How people can't see that picking members based on their skin tone is not racist, is absolutely crazy. Go woke, go broke. In time people will be so fed up with this insanity and it will have a massive backlash. And guess who will be back in 2024 when that happens
