NCAA Football 11 Updated Hands-On

Let your story be heard in EA Sports' upcoming college football game.

While I may not spend much time online anymore with my sports games, I always find time for a little NCAA Football online. The dynasty feature in NCAA is probably my favorite mode in any sports game, and taking it online (either against friends of perfect strangers) is a great extension of an already fun mode. Naturally, NCAA Football 11 is bringing online dynasty back, and I've been playing with the system for the past week to check out some of the changes.

Coward's End is our headline. That's a pun!
Coward's End is our headline. That's a pun!

There are two major changes to how online dynasty works in NCAA Football: dynasty wire and the new recruiting process. The dynasty wire features stories from around your online dynasty, and the game will automatically generate stories after each game in the season. If you've got the time (and the inclination), you can edit these stories to your heart's content, adding detailed description of the action on the field. You can also pull highlights from the game (either video or photos) and add them to your story. You can even put together stories before the season begins--I wrote a story about how Auburn would be refusing to redshirt any players for the season, in a mad dash to win and win now.

You can either edit stories in-game (which, frankly, takes forever, thanks to the clunky typing interface) or you can head to NCAA Football 11's dynasty home page, sign in, and put together stories there, which happens to be much easier. However, you'll need to be aware that stories you post via the Web interface will appear on your console, but they'll still be subject to filtering. For example, my recap story on Auburn's come-from-behind victory over Mississippi State was filtered in the console version of the game. I'm assuming it was because I put a "quote" at the end of my story calling for the immediate arrest and jailing of all Bulldogs fans (and LSU fans to boot).

As with the dynasty wire stories, you can also recruit via EA's NCAA Football 11 dynasty portal. As in the console interface, you can do practically everything you need to on the Web, such as checking out team needs, organizing prospects, and searching for specific recruits via a number of criteria. Adding or calling recruits is just a few clicks away, and, of course, you'll only have 10 hours per week to recruit.

Beyond the Web interface, the biggest change to recruiting has to do with the way recruiting interest is more explicitly displayed. There's also a slightly different method of making calls to individual recruits. In the past, you could choose specific aspects of your program--conference prestige, championship contender, and the like--to pitch to a recruit. In NCAA Football 11, those pitches are randomized to a certain extent; once a pitch pops up, you can choose from a number of options: make the pitch on that subject, determine how important that aspect is to the recruit, pitch that aspect against other leading programs, change the subject to something else (which is helpful when a particularly weak aspect of your program appears), make a promise to a recruit, schedule him for a visit, and offer a scholarship.

A more explicit recruiting system lets you know exactly what you need to do to get the recruit of your choice.
A more explicit recruiting system lets you know exactly what you need to do to get the recruit of your choice.

NCAA Football 11's recruiting is much more explicit than in years past in terms of the progress you make with recruits, thanks to a numerical system that will show how many points a particular pitch earns. Pitching a strong aspect of your program that also happens to be a high priority for a recruit will result in a big points gain; while pitching a weak aspect to a recruit who couldn't care less might not make much of a difference. This system is particularly useful when pitching against another program. Say you're trying to compare conference prestige of the SEC against that of a Big 12 school. You'll be able to add a significant number of points to your recruiting total while subtracting points away from that school--a great way to make big strides on a recruit who might be looking at a different program. As the weeks of the season pass, you'll also be able to see where your school ranks in that recruit's eyes, as well as how many points away you are from the next school on that recruit's list. In all, it's a better system; one that makes recruiting--which has seemed a bit of a dark art in the past--easier to understand than ever before.

NCAA Football 11 is due for release on July 13.

Fanirama, I can tell a pretty big difference between 2006 and 2010. What do you expect from a sports game? For them to remake a new game engine every single year? That's not possible. 2010 is much better than 2006 in gameplay.

To QingJao86 - Can you tell the diff between NCAA 2006 and NCAA 2010 if shown just the gameplay ( with no HUD if possible ) ?Or NCAA 2009 and NCAA 2010 ? If not, then GTFO and you're the idiot because of which they keep making the same game over and over with little improvement having no bearing on core gameplay and still charging $60 and fools like you rush in to give your cash leading to this vicious cycle

This game really looks good. I can't wait until the 13th when we can finally see if these improvements will come together and make this the best college football game ever.

I can't wait to play the full version since im an import draft class junkie on The Madden Franchise. I love the idea behind getting unlockable uniforms by playing the demo as it adds an extra boost to taking the time to play it not just check it for a few minutes then trash it. @CBottom7 I agree that not having the eye black is messed up since they can take the time to give options for various colored visors but no basic eye balck?? Laughable at best!

Love Dynasty Wire/StoryBuilder, TeamBuilder and Online Dynasty. But my favorite part of NCAA is the recruiting. Put them all together and you've got something really worthwhile. Not to mention the solid gameplay (going by the demo, of course). Cannot wait for the 13th. Fightin' Irish 'til I die.

@BrianEk now that you mention it I have noticed that Auburn is used frequently, and I was really curious about it. Glad to have someone involved with the State of Alabama working in the gaming industry!

Why aren't they ever gonna bring back player suspensions? I miss that small feature in dynasty. But Dynasty mode on this game is still one of the greatest ever. July 13th isn't coming fast enough

@jonallendavis -- The new conference alignments are not reflected in NCAA 11. While you can fiddle with the conferences yourself, you can't actually add teams to a conference without removing one--so when I tried to move Nebraska to the Big Ten or Colorado to the Pac-10, it wouldn't let me unless I removed a current team. There may be a workaround but I haven't found it.

NCAA Football has been the only EA Sports game I got in the last few years. The demo sold me on this one. Some great improvements and finally we can squib kick again (finally). 2 years of hearing the broadcaster suggest it and me thinking, well if I could I would. May not hold EA Sports in the best light but will give props when its due. This and the preview for the "Live" revamp is how improvements to their sport franchises should be done.

NCAA has always been better than Madden. Both games need to take giant strides forward though. The atmosphere still does not feel like you are in a football stadium.

The demo was very good and it looks to be a nice improvement from last year even though NCAA 10 was awesome. NCAA Football is pulling me closer to them again this year and further, further away from Madden.

@BrianEk Any word on the ability to include the drastic change in the landscape of the conferences for 2011 in Dynasty mode? Will it happen automatically or can the user adjust conference affiliation, change or create divisions, and a conference championship game? Penn State fans want to know! Bring on Nebraska!

I refuse to buy Madden until the engine is changed dramatically. But, I will be there for the midnight release of NCAA 11. I am excited, as this marks the first real sign of the new football season.

I wasn't crazy about the last 2 NCAA FB games... but the 360 demo for NCAA FB 11 has really sold me on this one. I'm sure the Dynasty online is cool and the recruiting is usually fun... but what really impressed me was how fluid and polished this NCAA FB game plays. The game just seems to have taken some nice strides on the field of play for this version. Even the instant replays have gotten an overhaul and are very well done. The game actually has some enjoyable presentation now. I'll be putting my amazon video game credits towards this one. Hopefully Madden 11 shows the same or more polish than NCAA shows. If so EA will have FINALLY delivered in the FB arena!

I played the demo and was genuinely impressed with the franchises' progress. Some glitches, but understandable. I'll look at reviews and I may actually look into a purchase, and mind you, I NEVER buy sports games.

Hopefully this game improves on field play more than they did last year. I played the demo and so far I was impressed with what I saw, guess I just have to wait for the final review to see what's up.
