Need for Speed World flags down 1 million
EA's online racing game hits platinum point, opens up upper levels of microtransaction-driven game; new co-op pursuit mode incoming.
Last January, Electronic Arts announced it was splitting its Need for Speed series into three subfranchises. One of those was Need for Speed World, an online, free-to-play street racing game featuring licensed cars and parts.
Today, EA announced that the game, codeveloped by EA Black Box and EA Singapore, has accumulated 1 million registered users since its launch on July 27. To celebrate--and draw in more players--EA is opening up the game's formerly premium upper levels. Previously, players could play for free only until they reached level 10. Those seeking a deeper experience had to buy the $20 Need for Speed World Starter Pack to be granted access to level 50.
Now, players will have access to all the features in the pack except the $20 worth of speedboost, Need for Speed World's in-game currency. Players can buy speedboost to accelerate their level progression, purchase power-ups and parts, double experience periods, and even rent and buy cars.
EA also said that it will soon be adding a host of new features to the game, including a co-op pursuit mode and a new region to race in. Also in store are more cars and a deeper vehicle customization mode.
NFSW has 150 miles of in-game road to traverse, including NFS: Most Wanted's Rockport locale and NFS: Carbon's Palmont city streets, as well as a full day/night cycle. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's latest look at the game.
