Neill Blomkamp Calls Denis Villeneuve A "F***ing A**hole" Over MCU Comments

A comment the Dune director made in an interview is fueling an ongoing argument about Marvel movies.

In a recent series of escalating verbal shots being fired, director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) has called director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2048, Dune: Part One) a "f***ing a**hole" for the latter's apparent harsh criticism over the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Villeneuve, whose long-delayed sweeping sci-fi epic Dune: Part One will finally hit theaters on October 22, recently spoke for an interview with the Spanish publication El Mundo. When asked why big-budget movies are still relevant, the director apparently--according to translated text reported by other publications--said, "The problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a 'cut and paste' of others… Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit… But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I don’t feel capable of being pessimistic at all."

You can read Blomkamp's thoughts in the tweet above, though again it does bear repeating that the circulating English translations may have been computer-generated and many not quite capture the intended spirit, wording, or sentiment of Villeneuve's thoughts. However, Villeneuve had also recently spoke dismissively of Marvel movies with the French outlet Premiere, saying, "These films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. It doesn't take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted." Again, it is entirely possible that something may have been lost in translation.

It's likely only a matter of time before other directors, and perhaps Martin Scorsese once again, join the chat on this conversation.

i feel exactly the same way. while stuff like antman and doctor strange was still fun, its just the same thing over and over. the whole avengers thing of combining huge movies was cool and remarkable but its done now. ill just imagine seeing anthony mackie, natalie portman in next big marvel crossover will feel like one of those "scary movie" b grade parodies.

but what does villeneuve and the other critics try to accomplish? make people think "aah he is so right, these mcu movies are actually stupid from the same mold, i didnt know it"

its like complaining that bold and the beautiful is stupid, over and over. does it make the viewers stop watching them? no. but it makes you as a complainer sound like broken record with nothing else to do

granted, the interviewer kinda baited him into that answer. "there are so many amazing big movies out now, why you think your movie is worth shit?"

It's like Madden and fifa. A cheap, easy, cash grab. I can't blame the publishers it's a proven method to make lots of money

I feel like there’s a little bit of jealousy in some of these directors. I agree that a Marvel flick isn’t the same type of film (or “cinema”) as The Godfather, Citizen Kane, or Gone With the Wind. There’s a clear difference. But was Terminator 2 “cinema”? Was Star Wars? Were the old Errol Flynn swashbucklers or Roger Moore James Bond flicks “cinema”? I mean if the purpose of the medium is to entertain then Marvel is doing it successfully. They are entertaining a wide diversity of people who don’t mind forking over the cash to sit in a theater for a couple hours. Yes they’re popcorn blockbusters, and yes sometimes the themes are reused….but I mean Hollywood has remade so many classics (ie True Grit, Scarface supposedly) at this point, I don’t think that’s really a serious problem. Eventually the craze will wear out, and these guys can continue making black and white films with subtitles that no one understands but argue about the meaning of for years…

I love movies but I also grew up reading comics and seeing the characters brought to the big screen with respect for the source material while enjoying it with my kids…that’s what I’m paying for when I go to the movies.

@Hurricane66: I believe Star Wars was. It had heart and integrity. It was also NOT proven and had been turned down by every major and minor studio. In some cases twice as Francis Ford Coppola (friend and mentor to Lucas in the early 70's) went to some of these studios and asked them to give it another chance. They didn't. Star Wars was not and was never intended to be a cash grab money train that Disney/Marvel is pumping out. It was a hail Marry of a film that was simply made as a passion project by Lucas.

Marvel movies are none of this.

@march202002: i think it they only made iron man and maybe thor or so, it wouldnt get much flak at all. no one screamed that raimi spidermen or ang lee hulk are somehow degrading the industry.

but disney/marvel turned these movies into "tonights episode". movie journalists need to talk about marvel 24/7

marvel's successful formula is 100% cut and paste...has been for quite some time. Any director who gets upset by hearing that is just cashing in on it anyways. People enjoy them obviously for entertainment and the studios can also check off the diversity box. I've been tired of the formula and want it to die out, but if people still enjoy it all the power to them.

I like Villenueve's movies, but this Dune stuff this is starting to worry me.

They might have poured just a little too much pretension into it. At the end of the day, It's a sci-fi movie with people wearing silly costumes and riding on giant worms. And judging by the trailer that literally shows most of the movie, they aren't really going anywhere the 1984 version didn't.

I'll be watching it. But at home, on HBO. Sorry Denis. No theatrical gross for you.

@phattsao: He doesn't care, but to say Dune is groundbreaking sci-fi cinema is like saying Guardians of the galaxy was groundbreaking for the MCU.

Ultimately, there is nothing special about Dune, except that the score is good and the shots are beautiful.

It's enjoyable, for sure, it's well made. But take the core story (told thus far) and it's boring af. Because even Dune inspired movies, so yeah. Maybe if you love the original material, but, for me, it's nothing much special even if I liked the overall experience.

Actually, @P00DGE, what he said was "pretty much cut-and-paste movies with slight alterations". And yes, that is true, and no, there's nothing wrong with that.

Villeneuve does come across as a pretentious ass. Movies exist as art and entertainment. Based on every interview i have seen Villeneuve give, he looks down on those that just want to be entertained or just make and entertaining movie
