While it might look like a regular monster-of-the-week mecha anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion quickly evolves into something entirely different. Sure, the cataclysmic battles between the EVA units and the Angels threatening humanity with extinction look great, but throw in an examination of life, downright depressing moments in the story, sinister plots in the background, and high-level intellectual debates, and you've got the perfect recipe for an anime series that raised the bar for the medium.

Those themes from the 26-episode TV series are explored further in the two accompanying films.
