Netflix Announces 12 New Anime Series (And A Godzilla Movie)

More anime to binge.

Netflix has announced 13 anime that are slated to come to the streaming service starting next year.

Among the most notable is Devilman Crybaby, based on the classic series by Go Nagai. The series, which will consist of 10 episodes, tells the story of a world taken over by an ancient race of demons and will launch in Spring 2018. Watch the trailer below.

Another series to look out for is A.I.C.O. Incarnation, produced by Bones (My Hero Academia). Netflix describes the anime: "15-year-old Aiko Tachibana, who lost her family in the Burst [accident], learns something unbelievable from Yuya Kanzaki, a new student at her school. A secret is hidden within her body, and the answer to the puzzle lies at the 'Primary Point' that was the center of the Burst." The series will get 12 episodes and debut in Spring 2018; check out the teaser trailer.

One interesting series is Cannon Busters, created by The Boondocks co-director LeSean Thomas. It follows a droid, a discarded maintenance robot, and a fugitive and will get 12 episodes. This announcement follows Thomas' partnership with Crunchyroll for another series, Children of Ether.

The other anime announced include:

  • B: The Beginning - crime thriller that debuts Spring 2018 with 12 episodes made by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell)
  • Sword Gai: the Animation - action fantasy debuting Spring 2018
  • Lost Song - fantasy series with 12 episodes slated for 2018
  • Rilakkuma Series - 13-episode series based on the popular mascot character
  • Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya - 12 episodes based on the popular '80s manga
  • Baki - 26 episodes based on the classic martial arts manga
  • Kakegurui - a gambling-themed series that will premiere in 2018 (watch the trailer)
  • Fate/Apocrypha - 25-episode season as part of the popular Fate series, premiering November 7 in North America and December 2 in Japan
  • Children of the Whales - "a world covered by oceans of sand" debuting in 2018

Netflix also announced a Godzilla animated film. Though we didn't get a trailer, we know it takes place in a harsh future where Godzilla has dominated for 20,000 years.

In other anime news, a Persona 5 anime adaptation was recently announced and is set to air in Japan in 2018.

Instead of something from a co-director of the Boondocks, how about just more Boondocks?

How about they just put out the continuation of anime series they've already started, like Ajin, Bleach, Attack on Titan... I also hate when Netflix calls a series a "Netflix Original" when it's been out in Japan for years.

@zyxe: I’d personally like to see more of “BLAME!” which is a recent Netflix Original, set in the same universe as Knights of Sidonia, but better IMO. They only made a movie but it badly needs a series.. still not sure if thats gonna happen or not.

@zyxe: Bleach anime was cancelled years ago by the creators, it won't be likely finished.

Also, most anime like Attack on Titan aren't made by Netflix, the second season is just now airing on tv in both Japan and America.

They have to wait for the Manga to get far enough ahead so that they can make the show. Manga only releases roughly once a month to every 3 months and usually ranges 30-60 pages which covers maybe half an episode. It's also usually only made by one or two ppl, so delays are common if they get sick, etc.

@inebriantia: Yeah, but Netflix only had like 3 seasons of Bleach and there are SO many more they could still put up!

I did hear a 3rd season of AoT was in the works, though. Awesome anime, can't wait to see more :)

@JIMDOG4442002: Oh I know I have subs to Crunchy and Funimation, I enjoy Japanese over English sometimes as well. Especially My Hero Academia. I like to binge watch, I can't do week to week, drives me nuts. That was a short season, though I think it started around April. The manga has progressed enough I think they could've went longer. Oh well..

@inebriantia: Yeah I really thought this season was going to be awesome too, but I hate when they have more slice of life anime being shown more than the ones I'm use to watching.

A LOT of Fantasy novels would make great anime adaptations. The Night Angel, The Lightbringer, Stormlight Archives, The King Killer Chronicles etc.

Just... Of course, headed by an American or European studio...

Nice, the DevilMan trailer looked cool. Netflix is taking a lot of chances with their content. It doesn't all work, but that's the only way to find the "new big thing". Constant sequels and reboots can be alright, though it becomes stagnant very quickly.

Cannonbisters not anime. Anime in the western context is animation made by Japanese for a Japanese audience. GI Jo and My Little Pony are not anime despite being animated by Toei.

@Chubnasty: no. You're just used to the crap they churn out today. Anime is animation in Japanese, which is why I specified western usage. Dont know how the definition I gave could be clearer.

The only good anime in recent years is One Punch Man and that's just because it is a parody of the industry.

@d_: Blue Exorcist is great, so glad they brought it back. Although too many ppl were confused by it since season 2 wasn't canon due to not enough source material at the time, and so season 3 picks up after season 1.

Kinda like with D Grey Man coming back, the 52 episode jump threw a lot of ppl off, and now that's its pretty caught up, it'll likely be 3 more years til another season due to the writers illness always causing delays along with her slow writing speed. I swear she's George R. R. Martin's illegitimate Japanese sister.

@inebriantia: Yeah, admittedly I didn’t really care for season 2 so much but mainly because it wasn’t nearly as action packed or picked up where season 1 left off.. def looking forward to 3 ;)

Blarg. I'm afraid to watch any anime that isn't a Netflix developed series like Voltron because I'm worried I'll get hooked...and then there won't be another season even though the show is popular. Probably because they want you to buy the mangas. I'm glad One Punch Man is a Netflix show.

...need more Part-Timer. That show is hilarious. Heck, even my mom watches it.

@Barighm: SAO is good, the Devil Is A Part timer is hilarious, IDK if you'd classify it as anime but the Transformers Robots in Disguise series is pretty good [it's not as good as TF Prime IMO but it's still pretty good], Yuki Yuna is A hero was good, Madoka was great, Your Lie In April was awesome, Vampire Knight is pretty cool, Ouran Host Club is hilarious.....

most of the anime on Netflix isn't actually Netflix funded...but the anime shows they have funded are superb.....i give all of em 9's and 10's cus they're so good....
