Netflix's Altered Carbon Isn't Getting A Season 3 Because It's Been Canceled

One of the streaming service's most-popular sci-fi series is no more.

The futuristic sci-fi series Altered Carbon has come to an end. Netflix has canceled its original series after two seasons according to Variety.

Based on a novel by Richard K. Morgan, the series begins over 350 years in the future, where consciousnesses can be placed into new bodies--allowing people to live much longer lives. The show followed political operative Takeshi Kovacs--played by Joel Kinnaman in Season 1, Anthony Mackie in Season 2, and voiced by Ray Chase in the animated feature Resleeved. A wealthy man offers Kovacs a chance at a new life, if he can solve a murder.

Now Playing: 8 Best Shows And Movies To Stream For August 2020 - Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video

Season 1 debuted on February 2, 2018, with Season 2 arriving on February 27, 2020 and the animated feature Resleeved releasing on March 19 of this year. Season 1 was viewed as favorable with critics, as GameSpot's Mike Rougeau called it a "cyberpunk masterpiece." However, Season 2 of the show hit the sophomoric slump, having not live up to the hype of the previous season.

The animated feature, which came out a month after Season 2 debuted, came and went unnoticed, earning a 65 of GameSpot's sister site Metacritic, out of two reviews.

Netflix has been canceling numerous high-profile series in 2020. This year, the streaming service giant canceled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Patriot Act with Hasan Minaj, The Society, and I Am Not Okay With This--just months after its debut.

The first season was okay, mostly due to a good cast. The second season was a bust. I don't blame Netflix for canceling it, even if it was just a financial decision. What possessed them to adapt the novels so badly is beyond comprehension. It would have made for a good TV series as is. I suspect there wasn't enough ways to inject Hollywood's 'woke' agenda. I can't prove it, but it's the only thing I can think of for making the changes they did. When you're given a series to tell the story and not have to cut it down to a 2-hour movie, there is really little excuse for not staying true to the source material as much as possible. That's what makes a show like The Expanse infinitely better.

I can understand some people's frustration in some of these series ending to quickly...some may need to be given more of a chance when viewers start investing time into watching...having said that, season one was really good and I was anxiously awaiting season two...but (imo) season 2 was disappointing and justified in it being cancelled.....There are so many Netflix films, series, along with other streaming services, that at time it's really hard to keep up with them all....but I'd rather have more choices than fewer, especially now when having to stay at home much more......Just as a side note, those looking for very good quality Sci-Fi should try out "The Expanse" on Amazon Prime, if you have that service...really good stuff.

Season 1's popularity was probably due to Joel Kinnaman's naked butt being onscreen 50% of the time.

Season 2 didn't have that.

Aside from the production value, it has always been a pretty bad show, but the second season was even worse. Anthony Mackie is not a good lead and the show is just straight-up boring and over complicated. I was surprised they gave it a second season to begin with, and definitely didn’t expect a third.

If I were on a Netflix show, I’d constantly be looking for my next gig, because they are 100% quantity over quality and the vast majority of their shows never see a third season. A lot of them don’t even see a second season. I mean, they bought/saved Lucifer just to kill the show off two after two seasons. Lol. There’s a reason Netflix is $15 billion in debt.

TV is doomed. Every single thing I'm remotely interested in gets killed. This whole streaming thing is deeply flawed if it's more unstable and frenetic than network television.

Shame. I really enjoyed the series. Season 1 in particular was a fun world too explore. I think the issue with Season 2 was the lose of lost of it's original cast. The jump forward and the actor swaps made it harder for viewers to get invested in.

Going forward, I would love to see this series get a videogame adaptation, perhaps something similar to Deus Ex or that older FPS 'Syndicate'

I agree....and Deus Ex or even something like System Shock would work well.

You can't really get invested in a Netflix show, because yeah, most seem to get axed within the first few seasons. And seeing as most Netflix shows are also designed to end with cliffhanger season finales, it gets unsatisfying seeing so many shows unwrapped.

don't At least give the show some closure. Or else what's the point of watching new shows only to see them cancelled without an ending?

Sabrina at least it seems will have an ending. That show deserved more. There are way worst shows that keep on going for years.

The second season was significantly worse than the first one. I couldn’t even finish it, as the quality drop was too significant. At least, they won’t drag this show for 2 more seasons like many others that became unbearable to watch past season 1 or 2. 13 Reasons Why was one of those, it should not have continued even for season 2.

I tried to read the novel, but very early in the story there is some moments... literally soft porn, it took me by surprise lol I was trying to get involved, imagining all the technology and etc.. but it becomes 50 shades of grey all of the sudden. I am far to be a "puritan", but it felt gratuitous to me, I had different expectations. Sci-fi have so much potential, but most authors just scratch that surface. And as a bonus, Netflix takes over with their low budget efforts, unknown actors who have the emotional range of a robot (and there's no robots in this story, as far as I know), etc.. It just kills it even more. And even when a really good movie is made, like the sequel of Blade Runner, it's not a financial hit. In the end, sci-fi fans are limited to novels. Maybe I will try the novel again in the future, with the right mood and etc.. but the cheap TV series, who cares, just another wasted potential. And I am aware about the horrible ending of the first season, a friend of mine watched the whole thing... it felt cheesy, like one of those mexican novelas

Yes, the second season wasn't as good as the first, but seriously, they could at least have wrapped it up properly. With how much networks cancel shows, it makes me wonder if I should even bother getting invested in anything. If they could at least let them get in some sort of ending, then fine, it's something, but to just cancel it on a cliffhanger is such a bad thing to do to fans.

It was pretty dull. Pretty much the only character I cared about was the hotel AI.
