Netflix's Hubie Halloween Costs News Anchor Her Job

Adam Sandler is not a job creator.

A Boston-area news anchor has lost her job as a result of her cameo in Adam Sandler's new Netflix movie, Hubie Halloween. While the movie is about a man who is trying to protect people from the terrors of October 31, reporter Alaina Pinto has apparently not benefited from such protections. Taking to Twitter, Pinto explained that this week she has been "let go" from her job for "mistakenly violat[ing her] contract" with WHDH, a position she has held for nearly four years according to her LinkedIn. You can check out her three-tweet thread on the incident here.

Neither Netflix nor Adam Sandler have issued a response, but adding insult to injury of losing her job during a pandemic--Pinto's LinkedIn also indicates that she is an active volunteer for charities including Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (a non-profit that mentors youth) and Ronald McDonald House Charities (a non-profit that "supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children).

Hubie Halloween released on Netflix last week to so-so reviews; one of our critics called it an endearing "rough watch" and also "a movie." In addition to Sandler, the movie also features Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop), Julie Bowen (Horrible Bosses), Ray Liotta (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs), Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), and former NBA player Shaquille O'Neal.

Let this be a warning to anyone that dares to think starring in a Sandler film is a good idea.

I can’t understand this article. It’s doing absolutely everything it can to put the reporter in a sympathetic light, including linking to her linked in and talking about charity work she does. That‘s really weird. Like, this story is just a story of a media professional in a contract dispute. Why the sob story aesthetic to this article?

@chriss_m: such a dumb article, its just click bait. Worked on me smh. She knew she couldn't legally do a cameo without clearance but was so starstruck she took the calculated risk. She even admits in her tweet she was hoping this wasn't the outcome but understands why they fired her. This isn't news or anything to get upset or feel bad about. The title should read "employee who violates contract gets fired". Gamespot must not have much to write about or just don't care how shady they come across to the readers, as long as they get the click

Didn't like this movie, was more depressing than funny.

Not his worst, watchable, but not exactly joyous.

Every job i've had, if I wanted to get a second job or even do charity work, i had to check in with the compliance officers.

Get an okay documented, before i could do anything.

Having said that, Firing the girl for a small part in a mediocre movie seems like an excuse. Maybe it was time for her to go, but they had no reason.

@clubgeo2000: Always in the US bud. I worked in large corporations in Cleveland, Chicago, New York and Orlando.

Always under the same rules and sometimes with non-compete contracts.

For anyone in a "position of trust", this is very common.

Second Jobs and even volunteer work must be cleared with compliance to avoid conflicts of interest, investment barriers and a ton of other restrictions.

And forget social media. There are so many rules i don't even try to navigate those waters.

@tlpina: If i might ask, what industry? As someone that's been in the workplace 25 years, many of which with FDA regulations - I've been subject to NDAs and Non Compete agreements, but nothing with compliance officers. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm merely curious.

@clubgeo2000: Both Financial and Technology industries. Large Corporations. I always had to be careful when doing any volunteer work, part time jobs, industry interviews etc.

Anything that could damage my current firm's image would be tightly controlled.

It's kind of funny. They could've hired any actor for the role. Even some extra to play the role and nobody would've cared. But instead they hired this news reporter and this happens to her.

You have to know your contract. If you can't appear elsewhere, you can't appear elsewhere.

I mean, it definitely sucks, but if you have a contract you are responsible for knowing what's in it and what you can and can't do, no matter what sex you are or how many charities you volunteer for.

if she was a man, she wouldnt have got the job to begin with. There is probably more sexism towards men than women. But hey, keep on playing the victim card despite being wrong.

@Saladudo: We have zero information that it was a contractual issue, everyone is just assuming that there is, and it must be her fault. There was nothing in this article explaining why this woman got let go for the movie part, except that she was.

Who knows what the whole story is, maybe it caused her absent days, or they already told her no before doing it, or any number of factors, no sense in pretending what is or isn't warranted with such little and one sided info...but unfortunately rash judgements from one bias side is all people ever use

The station wanted her gone and used this incident as a reason to fire her. Such a small infraction could have easily been overlooked. They didn't have to follow through on it.

@jinn366: Not really. I'm guessing you're not American. The single most important thing in the American legal system is precedent. If they have it in the contract that they can't do cameos, they have to fire her. If they don't, any future firing that's even remotely related means they'll be dealing with a lawsuit.

They have to enforce the contract or it makes all their contracts meaningless.

@Barighm: To be fair, they give him more spotlight than anyone else. Adam Sandler and his movies suck ass; Netflix is a good place for him because he can't make money on theatres since 1999 and people don't have to pay extra to watch his crap (and most of them do it out of pure guilty pleasure).

You like him, ok, to each his own.

That bites, but that is why you read whatever contract you sign. If anything it might have been a good idea to ask her station if this was ok.

Considering this happened in the USA, even if she was making an extra buck in her spare time, firing her seems incredibly anti capitalist, I thought they loved the fact people are working multiple jobs?

Fired for a cameo, stay classy guys.

@JusticeSword: Umm what now? Capitalism has nothing to do with desiring that people work multiple jobs. In fact, there are plenty of people in Communist countries like China end up working multiple jobs as well, but they have to do it in Sweat shops making Nikes instead of air conditioned news rooms...

Capitalism is not simply about earning Capital, it's about enriching yourself and your community in the pursuit of a better life and a better world. Think of it this way, you can't get blood from a stone, so even if you think that all the business people of the world are evil self interested bigots, you have to recognize that their self interest actually requires that the average person be doing better off tomorrow than they are today. Otherwise how could those evil capitalist corporations increase their capital gains year over year? If no additional wealth is being generated and it's a zero sum game, then the companies end up fighting each other incessantly and will eventually destroy each other and eventually themselves.

That's the beauty of the system because it is designed around the acknowledgement that there are going to be bad actors and it mitigates those problems as a function of the system itself, rather than by mandate from a governmental body, which is just as easily corruptable as any business is, so it never actually mitigates the problem, (see Venezuela).

This is why giant legal-y contracts, terms of service and user agreements are scary. I'm sure somewhere in one the EULAs I clicked through for a PC game I've forfeited children or organs.

Yeah, I mean it sucks, but this is a case of not reading your contract. Don't double-dip if you don't know the rules. It sucks she lost her job, but it's entirely on her and I don't think Sandler or Netflix owe her anything. She probably came in, auditioned, and got the role. Nobody forced her to make that movie/cameo, so this is her fault, which again, stinks.

It's not like she's delivering pizza--as an on-air television news anchor for a major network affiliate in a major US market, I'm guessing things get tricky when it comes to making appearances in other visual entertainment mediums. Lesson to millennials: read your contract.

@attirex: Yeah, true, it was in her contract, but such harsh action may not be warranted. It was a harmless cameo and, no offense to local news anchors, I can vouch as Boston guy that WHDH is hardly deep and meaningful journalism. This hardly affects her ability to perkily tell us that the traffic sucks on 128, a stray raccoon got trapped in a tree in Malden and Tom Brady is buying a new place. I think most people here on Boston saw this and said "Who?" C'mon WHDH, cut her some slack.

***edit*** Yeah, just did a quick check. The headline on WHDH right now is "Rock Star Tommy Lee says he'll leave US if Trump is re-elected." Seriously.

And they're firing people for being in Adam Sandler movies?
